That would be 50 more times. You forgot the Federal Government.

Easy, tell the Unions to go to hell.

A union is like an army. They're expensive and useful in turning hopelessness into hope.

In peacetime, armies and unions both turn to outright pillaging and oppression to keep themselves around. That farks with equilibrium points and economic well being.

The workers need a living wage and basic safety, that's true. What they don't need is their knees broke and their paycheck garnished so Guido Bouncerelli and his union thugs get 366 paid vacation days a year.

how is it going to have time to happen so many times ? I understand that small business owners, physicians, and soon energy producers are preparing to flock out of the country on the fastest transport available.

Massachusetts figured it out. Raise taxes and keep paying everybody. Reorganize the government to make it seem like something is being done. Save money by cutting pensions of workers who have not yet been hired.

Some projections go as high as 30 more states will be bankrupt in 2010. I don't know if that's true or not, but I do know that most of the states can't afford to pay their unemployment claims without help from the federal government.

Right. Unions bankrupted California, not a population that likes to use their stupid referendum system to vote themselves rich.

As with all things, it was a combination of smaller situations that have put cali into it's current crisis. tax cuts, spending increases, slowly declining tax base while the population continued to grow, services to illegal aliens...take your pick, everything there added to the problem.

I'm guessing you don't know how much oversight the government has of unions nowadays.

Here's an article that I submitted, but it was redlit:

California is 8 days away from issuing IOUs. Subby wonders whether you can pay the rent or buy groceries with them (new window)

I wonder what's going to happen once they start issuing IOUs? Seriously: can you pay the rent and buy groceries with them? Can you at least sell them or trade them (like bonds) for real cash? What will happen when people discover that they can't spend their "paycheck"?

Because Democrats.

Wait now. It was on Fark that I learned the rest of the country is beholden to California, and that as the world's xth largest economy, if we didn't like it they would take their toys and leave.

How's that working out then?

This is what happens when you put libs in charge. It's what they do.

Bankruptcy is the future of our once great country. It took California several years to get here. Obama and the federal libs are setting speed records trying to catch up to the golden state.

The stupid thing is that budget changes require a 2/3rds vote. This is what causing the crisis. Cut spending or raise taxes to do something but California is in a state of paralysis.

I believe the last time we went through this the banks honored the IOUs at about 80% of face value. There was much caterwauling and gnashing of teeth.

/Prop 13a - Require a 75% majority for new or increased spending. There, was that so hard?

Swampthing in Korea 2009-06-27 11:30:33 AM
I am perusing the California budget.

The biggest areas of expenditure seem to be K12 education and health and human services.

Logically speaking they are the areas you would need to cut.

Cali needs a new constitution. Voting for every damn thing that costs money while simultaneously voting down every damn thing needed to pay for it isn't a DEMOCRAT thing, it's a CALIFORNIA VOTER thing. (Well, it was also a Bush thing, but that's a different conversation.)

You should not be allowed to vote for, say, increased wages for firefighters unless attached to that vote is a vote for increased taxes or some other fund-raising measure that actually #!@%$ pays for it.

Gato Negro 2009-06-27 11:34:29 AM

Better shout it loud. The leftists in D.C. are already planning sweeping amnesty to create MILLIONS of freshly minted democrats - thus inspiring the next wave of 3rd world illegals.

It's going to happen...

it's not as is Bush and Company were not pouring massive amounts of cash into Iraq every day.

In your conservative bias, you are blind to one simple truth. Both political parties spend money like it is water. They just spend it on different things.

No more free services for illegal aliens. Let parents choose which public schools they can send their kids to and charge more for the better schools. In fact, do away with public school except for those below poverty.

Based on what I am seeing, Calworks alone pays $275 million and more than 300+ million for the Supplemental Nutrional Assistance Program.

No, that amounts to states issuing their own money. States are not allowed to do that, there is one mint.

CA will end up defaulting. The end.

More like 30-35 years. The problems date back to at least Jerry Brown, and probably Ronald Reagan. And every "fix" used has made the situation worse.

There are several other states that are going down the same path for different reasons. But, you can't lay the blame on Bammy. He just inherited it. (FTR I did not vote for Bammy. Thought he was too slick.)

How about running them ALL out of DC and replacing them with adults?

I agree, both sides suck. The problem here is ideologies. The right has its problems, but the left is completely unhinged. Those "different things" you mentioned do make a difference.

I have a simple fix. Put me in charge of California's budget for just 3 months. Allow me to hire, fire, or change wages without fear of lawsuits or any other crap. Change some laws & modify budgets.

1. All State legislators are capped at 45k for the first 3 years. 60k for the next 2. After that 90k is the highest paid salary possible and you have better damn well earned it. Dont like it? dont work for the people. If found and convicted of taking bribes, all pay since you have been a legislator will be repaid to the state.
2. Programs that dont help people in need, educate, produce or maintain are cut. Programs that overlap need to merge and have 25% of the budget removed or 1 will be cut. The one that will be cut is the one causing the most issues with a merger.
3. Talk to unions, say you're pro-union, but unless they ease up and let the state recover they will be a jobless union. Ask for time then they will see better options appear.
4. Increase fines for littering on the beaches, parks, roadsides. Increase enforcement to the level of insanity.
5. Illegals want to be a California citizen? That will be $5000 per adult, $2000 per child born outside the US. This is 1 year trial card for citizenship. Only Valid if you can prove you have lived in the state for 1 year. Offer valid for 1 year only, this can be revoked if you are found to commit a crime within a year of obtaining the card. You may use this as normal ID for jobs, getting a license, school, etc.
6. Offer State medical insurance for anyone if the govt fails to make one. There is a lot of money in this and people will switch, many just need checkups and something for emergencies not expensive medication.
7. Legalize it. Begin growing pot in secured locations. By the time its ready you should have everything setup. Increase fines for selling unauthorized pot. Tax it worse than liquor from the start. Illegal grow farms will be heavily fined and land/house can be taken. All of course to prevent harsh chemicals used in these grow operations from being used...
8. There is more but getting lazy.

#5 is an interesting concept. Perhaps the Feds might look into to that.

Dwight_Yeast 2009-06-27 11:53:21 AM
Yeah, those balanced-budget amendments were really a brilliant idea folks!

Subtard: not all states have balanced-budget laws, so some are actually able to cover their shortfall in this situation, which means they won't go bankrupt. And many other states (PA and NJ for instance) are balancing their budgets by cutting spending and raising taxes. I know it's a crazy idea, but it appears it's going to work.
