Ha! +1 For #1 being Nu-metal.

#1 Neo-MJ

This list is for the most part spot on, IMO.

nephlim [TotalFark] 2009-06-27 03:38:54 AM
They may be out of order with regard to which genre I hate most, but the list is dead on.

*sigh*

Filtered @ work.

Could someone please post the list?

Lostkacz [TotalFark] 2009-06-27 03:44:47 AM
yeah, I agree with most of this... however, I don't agree with Limp Bizket and Kid rock being labeled the source of rap-rock. They are more the most recent examples that also dont do the genre justice. Public Enemy/Anthrax and Run DMC/Aerosmith were the start of it. And that worked cause it was collaboration.

10. Hillbilly Rock
9. Techno
8. Pop-Punk
7. Gangsta Rap
6. Rap-Rock
5. Emo
4. Smooth Jazz
3. Adult Contemporary
2. Country
1. Nu-Metal

AcheronX [TotalFark] 2009-06-27 04:22:08 AM
Nu-Metal wasn't great, but it's not the worst.

Also, System of a Down are not Nu-Metal.

TheFunChicken 2009-06-27 04:22:20 AM
Techno should be at least #3 if not higher, and some rap-rock is pretty sweet, for example the Judgement Night soundtrack.

/Del + Dinosaur, Jr. FTW

This, and claiming Serj is a bad singer is kind of stupid given that he was originally a classically trained opera singer.

good list. especially #1.
/kind of disappointed that grindcore isn't on the list

onyxia 2009-06-27 04:42:50 AM
I know I'll get flamed for this, but quality techno is a fine thing. It has structure, movements and far more theory than any genre outside of classical or jazz. Unfortunately, any idiot with a computer can make a shiatty techno album so the good stuff is relatively rare (and, sadly, under-appreciated as the club kids just want crappy house beats so they can dry hump each other while on E).

I do agree with TFA that few things are so profoundly grating as bad techno.

It seems like this guy made this list as a reason to troll System of a Down fans.... I really don't consider System of a Down to be a nu-metal band.

This. House music really destroys the credibility of good Electronic music.

Otto Von Shirach and Mouse on Mars are really mind blowing, but it gets mixed in with lots of other crap.

If you can hear the same drawn-out intro, hyperactive buildup, watery bridge and pounding reentry over and over again, you are definitely on something listening to trance

FTFI

Although I love Fugazi, and know exactly what you mean about original 'emo', the definition has changed. The stuff you are citing as good and/or original emo is probably more accurately described as post-hardcore. I too remember when emo was good shiat, like "Fugazi", lighter stuff like "Sebadoh", or "Spring of '44". But the word emo now defines a generation of shiatty, derivative corporate crap.

Hate to break it you, there's no scientific basis to the rating of any music. It's all opinion.
Sometimes it's well argued, sometimes not, but it's just opinion.

Yeah, like if I mention I like jazz and sumbotty replies "ooh, me too. I just bought kenny g's new album". ugh.
After an exchange like that I usually avoid that person forever.
Anybody that listens to soft jazz can't possibly have anything of value to say to Me.
Yup, I am SOOO a music snob. I'm short, bald, stupid as a rock, don't have a dime to My name; hey, I need someway to maintain self-esteem. heh heh.

Yep... I was going to say the same thing. Although I thought, "anything by Yoko Ono" would be on there somewhere... maybe that falls under "emo"?

Mad Mark 2009-06-27 06:59:08 AM
Man, this guy really hates country music. A buddy of mine lived in Iowa and moved to Arkansas. He had a bumper sticker on his truck with a 3 eyed smiley face that said Discourage inbreeding- ban country music. He found out people from Arkansas don't have the same sense of humor as Iowegians.

Distortion in drop D? Check. Post-Punk/Rock/Music melodic elements with Hardcore (as opposed to Metal) structures? Check. Guitar as a rhythm instrument? Check. Incomprehensible lyrics about...something whiny? Check.

How are they not nu-metal? Just because they know how to play?

Seriously though, I've heard bands with sentences for names that are more Metal-like than SoaD.

/i remember the term "mallcore" being used back when Korn just broke with that moronic cartoon of theirs. I always thought it was a more appropriate tag than "nu-metal".

19Cranes 2009-06-27 07:05:45 AM
Sometimes I feel like rap and country are really the only worthwhile genres.

Illidan 2009-06-27 07:08:29 AM
I love this list. It's perfect. I love System of a Down, too, but only certain songs. All of these genres have in common a complete lack of bluesy guitar riffage and/or noodling, and you've GOT to have something cool.

Classical: It's got all sorts of crap going on, cool.

Metal: Yep, less variety but + awesome / varied riffs, often with frenetic drumming and/or bass.

Jazz: More cool crap than you can shake a stick at.

Really, really distinguished singers: Voices that just carry the whole thing.

These genres: MOSTLY FAIL

I guess they forgot about the entire indie scene.

A subculture devoted to frowning upon people who don't understand the artistic depth of a song where the backing music of the sound of a man pissing into a bucket and someone playing the banjo with a cello-bow, and a some scrawny wanker is crooning something into a microphone that would have Yoko Ono go "WTF!?"

Not to mention that their fanbase consist entirely of frowning condensing assholes, who will point out that the new album of whatever band was rather awful, but they listen to it in an ironic way, because they liked them back before they went mainsteam and started selling CDs. They were much better when you could only get hold of their music by purchasing 8-track tapes from a guy hanging out in the alley between Starbucks and Urban Outfitters every Wednsday following a new moon.

Never mind, I looked at the rest of the blog, and discovered that he's one of them.

Prolly means that the blogpost was posted from a Mac, while sitting in a coffeeshop sipping a latte and listening to Björk.

You know, nothing ruins a thread faster than someone who doesn't know shiat posting garbage about music they don't know anything about. You probably don't know a damn thing about house music, but house music is as expansive and diverse as almost the entire electronic music genre alone. Yes, there may be styles you don't like, but there most certainly is a style of house music that would appeal to you. Feel free to continue posting your rubbish, but name checking Otto Von Shirach and Mouse on Mars confirms you as a loser IDM geek who probably doesn't even know that much about IDM either.fark off.

I hate when people say: " I like every kind of music, except country".

Really? You like EVERY kind of music, and country is the only one you don't like?

When they say that, I ask them who their favorite Polka singer is.

They usually give me a clueless look.

"Well you said everything but country. So I guess you listen to jazz, classical, Klezmer, tuvan throat singing, Hawaiian slack key guitar, disco, breakbeat, hardcore, emo, twee, funk, jazzfunk, Tejano, tex-mex, acid jazz etc etc. That's pretty diverse dude. It's amazing that you listen to such a diverse range of music. It's especially amazing that you listen to EVERYTHING, and the only genre you dislike out of the thousands of kinds of music is Country. Especially since it is so closely related to Rock and Roll.

People who say that don't know s**t about music.

I don't think Hillbilly Rock is the right term for the nickelback/3 doors down genre. When I think Hillbilly Rock, I think of something very retro and country, like Dwight Yoakam.

I call that 3 doors down, seether, stuff Cock Rock. But I am not sure that that is the right term.

I will add that on most occasions such people who say this just don't want to admit the fact that they don't listen to rap or R&B.

What specific bands would you say fit in that genre?
