Hell yeah...I was watching some 70's music show last night on VH1 Europe, followed by 'Smells Like The 90s.' It was great!

I'd kill your mother for the opportunity to have MTV be half music videos, half pop-up video.

are you implying VH1 is better? I would've given the slight nod to them a few years ago, not so much now.

i thought the first several years of vh1 turned out for me better than any era of mtv. i still like the occasional viewing of vh1, but after 6 hrs of "i love the 80's like totally wow to the max" or whatever version they're on now, or "there were totally like 1000 one hit wonders in the 80's so in the 10 different versions we have of this show you'll pretty much see gary newman and tony basil at least 25 times"

so yeah, spent almost 5 years in germany (with about 5 months of that time in italy) and mtv showed videos or concert footage about 90% of the time and it was great

Lumber Jack Off 2009-06-25 03:33:18 PM
well duh. MTV in Europe used to ( I don't know if they still do) actually cover music festivals, showcase up and coming bands playing in the region and even played more obscure and extreme stuff. I don't know if they still do or not but it was once nothing but music, 24/7. and heavy metal wasn't farking ignored. ever.

I got to watch Mtv Asia while in Indonesia. Of course, it covered more local artists, but holy crap did they play a lot of videos! Actually discovered a few bands that way while I was there. No reality shows, soap operas, nothing! Hell, I even got to see one of the VJs (she was soooo hot) doing a show at one of the malls we went to. It was like Mtv from a little over fifteen years ago. I loved it.

Put me in the "watching today's videos would NOT make it better" category.

Chechen MTV is pretty cool. Sometimes they'll air traditional dances along with modern stuff.

probably not, but I imagine that had they kept consistently showing videos,as opposed to almost completely abandoning them by 2000,we might not have some of the crap we have now. Or if we did, they would, at least in theory, be balanced out by better acts.

I feel I must point out that VH1 still plays "This Is Spinal Tap" from time to time, which in and of itself, is better than the sum of MTV's entire lineup.

plus a lot of bands don't even bother to make videos anymore since they know they won't be played. and i'm talking about bands that actually have the fan base, the financial backing and the ability to draw in new fans. not the extreme underground.

KingKauff 2009-06-25 04:10:31 PM
The last time I purposely tuned into MTV or VH1 was for Live 8. I figured that they would actually show some of the acts. Boy was I wrong!

If I can, I always take these challenges. I succeeded to 3:04 or so. I'm all for blending genres and experimenting, but holy sh*t, those guys need to make up their minds. Emo with screaming and metal and then bringing in techno. Terrible.

Okay, okay...the 'music' itself is pretty weird by attempting (unsuccessfully) to transcend about 3 or 4 genres over 4 minutes.

I'm also curious how exactly the director said "okay guys, for the performance scenes, prance around and generally pose like an Alaskan king crab trying to take a sh*t", and the guys actually agreed.

I'm sure they know it's horrible. They just didn't know until they saw it. This is what happens when local music scenes are not supported. Bands go straight from their garage/practice space to videos. It takes years of performing live to get comfortable on state/in front of a camera. There's a fine line between looking stiff and looking like you're trying too hard to be animated.

barneyfifesbullet 2009-06-25 07:52:09 PM
I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers on MTV this morning before I left for work. Of course it was 6:30 AM. I though about how weird it was to see an actual music video on MTV.

Then this who Michael Jackson thing this evening, and more actual music vids on MTV. Weird.

Everyone pining for music videos needs to take a step back and think about what videos they'd be playing: Nickelback, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus......careful what you wish for

Wait...did I wake up in a world where YouTube no longer exits? Oh god...now I really WON'T be able to watch music videos...

Hey, wait. It's still there.

Are you actually just complaining that no one's telling which videos are ok to watch?

this too is why I'm not really all that interested in an MTV comeback. If anything, Youtube made music videos much more relevant.

Let's play an open D for a long freakin' time. Autotune the hell out of the vocals...OH YEAH, let's throw on a title from a Nickelodeon mascot from the 90's! HOW IRONIC!

Wait...wtf...I just heard the electronic part...yeah, no.

The mixing is wonderful though. I have to give them that. Everything is really well balanced.

I was watching MTV when they played their first music video (OK MTV didn't invent Music Videos), there were infant music videos being born long before that.

I miss actually seeing music videos on MTV so I don't really watch anymore, I hate ALL reality shows and that seems that this is the predominate type of show on air now, so, meh.

I have to agree that most of the time (if they decided to play them) would be filled with the bland generic pop tripe of the 'Disney' ilk so I will watch my music videos on YouTube, I like being the Program Director, I can watch whatever video I want, any band I want, stack 'em like trains and watch them all night if I decide that's my agenda.

So yeah, I'll just stick with YouTube for videos.

An MTV exec explained the networks decision to reduce video airplay without going into detail this way. It boiled down to network ratings & music exec fear of MTV's influence over sales.

I am guessing labels were steering their clients clear of MTV or limiting music video access? The closest current analogy is their fear of iTMS.

Wat?

MTV Nordic airs music videos between midnight and 6AM I think. The rest of the time, it's Made, My Super Sweet 16, Cribs, A Shot at Love, and all that other shiate that's definitely not music videos.

But then again, there's VH1 classics, which is basically MTV playlists from the nineties without the commercials and artbreaks.
