Styx without Dennis DeYoung is fine with me. Tommy Shaw's songs with Styx are the best as far as I'm concerned.

Same thing with Damn Yankees.

He's a dick but he did sing and write most of their most famous shiat. Its really not the same without him.

Long-haired music[ians] refers to the wigs the classic composers wore, like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart...

I thought so too, but he was on the Bob and Tom show a couple of weeks ago and seemed really cool. Maybe he mellowed out after realizing what a douche he was.

I still have my Paradise Theater album, the vinyl has a laser reflective hologram or some shiat on it.

I have Kilroy was here on vinyl too.

I don't think my fingers are strong enough to talk about the Styx/Dennis breakup.

I will say that Dennis is NOT a huge asshole (having met him and also having talked with others who know him very well)

Dennis always felt someone needed to take control of the band for them to do their best, and guess what. Nobody else took control.

I've never heard of JY working on an album and saying "we should do this or that" the same with Tommy.

Yeah, Dennis wanted to do things HIS way, but he did it FOR the band. He wanted hit records for all of them.

Lots has happened in the history of the band, so unless you know it don't talk about it.

And don't say "Well I saw the VH1 Behind the Music!" because it was a complete disaster for both sides.

If anything, Dennis is having more success than Styx now. Styx released Cyclorama which flopped, yet Dennis just released a new album that went Platinum here in Canada.

I still support Styx, even though it's 1 original member. Technically Tommy joined up after their 5th album. And Chuck has full blown AIDS so he doesn't tour that much.

So Tommy and JY are the only full-time original members in the band. Chuck sometimes comes out, and Gowan is one Strange Animal!

I've seen Styx 7 times in the past 10 years and I am always pleased with the shows. I got to see Dennis solo last year and you know what? He and his small band using RENTAL equipment sounded just as great as Styx with their truckloads of equipment.

And as for the "Dennis is a douche" just listen to ANY interview of his. He really never comes off like that. He truly believed his work in Styx was to guide the band to success. Giving them 4 consecutive multi-platinum albums proved he could do it. the guys could have left for something else if they wanted to, but instead decided to oust Dennis.

I'm 25, and I've loved listening to Styx for just over 10 years. I own almost every album, multiple copies on Vinyl, I read whatever I can find as far as interviews, history of the band etc.

Styx is great, and I just wish things had gone different back 10 years ago. It's actually almost 10 years since Brave New World was released, 4 days from now it came out. And then less than a month later Dennis was kicked out of the band and told "goodbye"

Someday, just someday I hope I can see Dennis, JY, Tommy and Chuck Rockin' The Paradise together. Until then, I'll enjoy and respect both camps.

Cooper420: He truly believed his work in Styx was to guide the band to success.

Your point is well taken, but EVERY megalomaniac lead singer truly believes that.

Also, Cyclorama is as solid a rock record as they've ever made.

The world's FIRST laser etched album! I also have the world's first laser etched single (Best of Times / Snowblind I believe)

I own like 5 copies of Pieces of Eight, 4 copies of Cornerstone, 2 copies of Kilroy, 2 copies of Styx II.... I like Vinyl and I love Styx

Yeah well I think it's JY who's really got the bug up his ass. Dennis used to sit down with Tommy and be like "wow man that's a great song lets put it on the album" For instance Boat on the River may never have been a song on any album because Tommy had written it but it wasn't complete and he didn't think it was any good. Dennis came to Tommy and told him they should work on it because it was a really great song.

As for Cyclorama, I liked it but I honestly did prefer BNW over it, and lots of other Styx albums over it.

So far Chuck has stated that he'd like a reunion with Dennis "before any more of us die and before people just don't care anymore" Which sure seems like a different stance from when Behind the Music was done (that show was farking horrible) And Dennis has even done some touring with Glen Burtnik in recent years.

Give some of the tracks from Dennis' new album (One Hundred Years From Now) Reviews have slated it as a great Styx album that was never made.

Dennis really did a great job on this, and it's closer to a Rock album than any of his other solo stuff. He gave it the Styx sound because, hey he's not in the band and he was responsible for a certain sound that they had, so why not use it now.

I hate to admit how old I am, but I saw Styx when Lady came out with their original guitar player (the one that Tommy Shaw replaced). And they rocked like nobody's business.

I saw Dennis DeYoung a couple years ago here at the Fraze with the Dayton Philharmonic orchestra and it was one of the best shows I ever saw. The quality of music was unfreakingbelievable. And to Dennis DeYoung's credit, he's still married to the same women he married 30 years ago when he wrote Babe for her.

I still like Tommy Shaw tho - he's one seriously talented musician and songwriter. I just wish they'd all get over themselves and hook up for some more great shows. I'd pay to see them.

Thanks :) I am really passionate about Styx, as they were one of the first rock and roll bands that just blew me away with their songs. I remember about 12 years ago there were two things. an SNL sketch with Will Ferrel playing Dennis and hawking a compilation CD entitled "Songs That ruined Everything" As well as the South Park episode where Cartman has to finish Come Sail Away every time he hears the opening lines.

Back then, the internet was just a young thing and streaming audio was just coming around. For about 2 weeks I listened to Styx Greatest Hits in poor quality but I loved all of the songs.

I ended up buying the album and being able to really hear everything I was hooked. I'd always heard classic rock music but I never got to appreciating it until then.

Since then I've become a huge fan of anything "classic" rock.

And Rambler, does your name happen to have any relation to the Levon Helm Midnight Ramble?

I'd like to think they could all let the past be the past and go on tour together. Saw them on Grand Illusion, Paradise Theater, and Kilroy tours and enjoyed them every time. Saw the band without Dennis once and I have to say it just wasn't the same. I was in the category of "always thought Dennis was a douche" but I see now he was an integral part to the balance of the band. And recent interviews show that if he was a douche, he's gotten over it. So here's hoping,

/Still hoping for Gary Richrath to get back with REO too.

I'm picking up a printed interview promo release from Germany today. It was a very small distribution to German journalists during the Paradise Theater tour.

It's got a bunch of interviews with the band so it'll be interesting to see the "promo" side of Styx back then, what they all had to say at the time of interviews, etc.

I saw them perform at The Gorge Amphitheater with Kansas opening back in the 90s i think. John had just died. They were pretty good nonetheless. Dennis had something wrong with him... was skinnier than hell, and they couldn't do Mr. Roboto due to the high winds or something but I still enjoyed the concert. That being said:

I've outgrown Dennis' more schlocky songs. If I listen to Styx now, it's frequently the Tommy Shaw sung stuff. "Boat on the River" from Cornerstone, or "Renegade". The earlier stuff is great too.. Suite Madame Blue and Pieces of Eight are great. Grand Illusion is a great album, and I have a special spot for Ballerina because it reminded me of a girl that I had a crush on in high school but died of Leukemia.

But that being said, listening to Styx (well after it was fashionable to do so, as I never embraced the 'grunge' music of my youth - I'm 31 now) was a big part of growing up for me. I loved their stuff.

I still don't understand how it's even remotely important for Styx to show up at a White House briefing. That's just bizarre!!

Jesusaurus 2009-06-25 02:31:42 PM
My first rock memory was my older brother bringing home Pieces of Eight in 78 and playing Renegade for me over and over. I became an air guitar god to that album.

They played at the rodeo arena in the town I grew up in last summer. They were the musical act for a car show. It was depressing.

Call Dennis, guys, seriously.

They were in town for a concert, I'm sure Gowan actually wanted to go so a few of them decided to tag along. Missing was JY and Ricky Philips, their current full-time bassist.

You would have seen Styx in 1996 during the Return to Paradise tour, John Panozzo died in July of that year halfway through the tour. They also did some shows in 1997. From what I recall Dennis was doing quite well then, he could have been worn down from Johns death, and he is called "The Doctor" for a reason, as soon as he even feels a cold he apparently starts taking 10 different medications.

If you watch the Return to Paradise DVD, you'll see Dennis looks great and it was recorded on the last night of that tour in '96.

JY's wife had a stroke last year, and he takes whatever time off he can to be with her. Probably why he didn't make to the White House.

Dennis played right across the street from my house last summer. We have a huge park across the road, and a hot air balloon festival every labour day weekend, and he was the headline act. He's huge here in Quebec. He put on an amazing show - nothing too fancy, some lights, a video screen, and well-rehearsed, energetic rock'n'roll. His voice sounded great, he obviously still loves what he does and loves singing the songs, and the crowd ate it up.

It was a little cheesy - my wife kept looking at me that way they do whne they don't get it, but she humoured me and I had a great time.

/Kenny Rogers this year - not so excited, but my mum is

Hrm. Well he was SO skinny. wore this sort of form- fitting striped outfit with a hat. I thought he didn't look well, but we werent that close to the stage, having staked a place on the grassy area. Good concert though.

She didn't have a stroke it was a brain aneurysm which was successfully treated and she made a full recovery.

He has done promo stuff (interviews etc) and they have been touring quite a bit since then, so that might not have been the reason.

Gowan replaced Dennis DeYoung in the summer of 1999, he is a Canadian artist who had some successful hits, Strange Animal, Moonlight Desires and Criminal Mind.

Todd Sucherman has been the drummer for Styx since about 1995, he took over for John Panozzo who was gravely ill due to alcoholism. He died during a 1996 Styx tour where Todd was just "filling in" while John was to get better.
