That guy is amazing. Best in the world, imo.

Check out Classical Gas on Youtube, too.

I hate you. There was a time when this would've made me grab my guitar & practice for hours. Now I just grunt in disgust & grab a beer.

Respectfully, technique aside, when he is playing those harmonic minor scales over and over, it would be more interesting hearing the sound the guitar would make if it fell over.

A few moments there he plays some very short classical movements which are beautiful. He should stick to that.

Damned good guitar player but not impressed that subby and poster are impressed.

The guy is only doing what any damned good guitarist can do; what's with all the accolades?

Maybe it's that we don't get to see that many damned good guitarists anymore. It's one thing to play fast. It's another to make music out if it.

But also agree with others - couple of a handful of great passages, but most of it fairly standard (but accomplished) blues.

As opposed to the submitted vid where the guy is just finger puking all over the pentatonic? Takes a bit more technique to actually add some modality.

Not terrible mind you, just not all that impressive either.

Did you and I watch the same video? Cause I just saw a guy rip up an ACOUSTIC guitar, and he used the chromatic scale plenty. Maybe it's your ears.

Pemulis 2009-06-24 10:58:52 AM
Tommy Emmanuel's an amazing guitarist and he puts on a great show according to anyone I've ever heard that's seen him. It's not necessarily my favorite style, but the guy can flat out play.

The important thing to know is that now, like always, people on Fark are not impressed by anything and live to sh*t on others' accomplishments. Headline in the newspaper tomorrow:

"Tommy Emmanuel: Unimpressive on Guitar"

No to add any snark to a snarky page already, but I've said this about myself when unfairly lauded about my playing: good guitar players are a dime a dozen - I've known many fine players in my 58 spins around the Sun. He's a good guitar player; I'm a good guitar player; we are a dime a dozen.

Good enough to write tunes that SRV would embrace? We must have a lot of luminaries on here on Fark. If Tommy Emmanuel is a "dime a dozen" picker, then that puts most guitarists at the "dime a gross" or "dime a great gross" level, which really means that your dime is worth far more than you think.

Can we have a link to a dhudd video so we can decide for ourselves?

Thing thing I hate most about musicians and being involved in music for 35 years is the "I can do that too, but better" syndrome. I find it repulsive.

Examples:

"Bob Dylan can't sing for shiat"
"Chuck Berry only plays Chuck Berry riffs"
"Springsteen is not talented, that is 3 chords going back and forth"
"AC/DC plays the same song over and over"
"I stopped playing pentatonics my first week at Berklee"
"Sun Ra Plays with his elbows" (yes I actually got that one from a semifamous jazzer)
etc etc etc

He's good and so are you? Good guitar players are a dime a dozen? Well then as Zappa would say, "Shut up and play yer guitar". But I disagree.

When an artist can entertain, inspire or even move an audience it is a beautiful thing. It's everything, actually. It's the only way to measure art.

Actually, I play better than that. I make money at it as well. I get commission checks all the time from the guy I send my shiat to. I, however, DO NOT WANT TO BE FAMOUS. You lose all your freedom in life when you become famous. I use a nom de plume. I hate playing for live audiences - they make noise and ruin the experience. And I don't put free stuff on the internet.

Five Tails of Fury 2009-06-24 01:04:22 PM
So I've been noodling around with some new blues lines lately on my busted-ass old Strat copy, been feeling pretty good about how it sounds, been thinking 'hey, I'm getting better!' for a couple of weeks, even got a couple of songs generating out of it.

I see this, I start thinking I should take up the kazoo.

Thanks a lot, Subby.

Anyone on fark ever give you their home phone, address and invite you to play - still think I'm a faker? Try me.

Not sure if you're a faker or not. Not interested enough to do the forensics.

I do know you are someone I would never want to play with, for pay or for free.

And posting your personal information -- even in a fit of righteous indignation -- is never a good idea.

I don't know whats more impressive, that Fredricksburg is relatively close or that you put your home phone number on Fark. I can see people calling and then just blasting their favorite guitar player into the phone.

Ol' Tommy can play. Not necessarily my thing, but no doubt about his ability. Even if I don't necessarily 'like' these types of songs, I do enjoy watching them play.

I guess I'll keep with the thread and post my current favorite ditty - Mark Knopfler and Song for Sonny Liston (new window). Just a simple hook on the Les Paul with excellent lyrics. Classic Mark.

You wouldn't get invited - I don't jam with chumps. And if you show up, you probably won't get very far up the very long driveway before my father in law shoots you. But, go ahead, give it a try.

My producer sells my stuff to Bill Pettaway. He chops it up into little bits and makes beats out of it. I hate the music he makes, but I love the royalty check. I play with finger picks. Flat picks are too limited.
