Not tryimg to be a dick here, but who?

Is the fact that I've never heard of these guys before an unforgivable lapse? Is there a must have record from them? Or can I happily continue on with my life? Anyone with knowledge care to help me out? That'd be nice.

Go cry tears of happiness, emo kid.

/will sit here crying tears of sadness because Jawbreaker hasn't reunited

Woah, woah, woah. There's an over 30 emo crowd? Do they wear those stupid-as-hell skinny jeans, too?

gamacrit: Not tryimg to be a dick here, but who?

They had a couple hit songs in the mid-late 90's and they're considered one of the pre-emo bands that influenced the wave of shiatty emo that hit a few years ago.

ElQue [TotalFark] 2009-06-23 10:48:31 PM
Here's one of their better songs: In Circles

Let me know when The Promise Ring reunited and tours.

tboucher 2009-06-23 10:56:09 PM
over 30, listened to active alternative radio stations heavily in the mid to late 90s and never heard of these guys or the linked song...ever.

Jocundry 2009-06-23 10:56:46 PM
Hmm. I liked them back in the day. I still like a few of their songs. I have no desire to see them or listen to any new songs.

nitrowhip 2009-06-23 10:59:25 PM
Had to go take a shower to fully realize the implications of this announcement...namely, no Florida dates means Atlanta ROAD TRIP or Boston flight! And with Nate back as well, I feel like a giggly school girl.

Well, I mean, you're clearly not going to die or anything, but there are, equally clearly, a lot of people who are really excited about this, so how is coming in here and insisting that the fact that you've not heard a band that means a lot to a lot of people anything but a major dick move?

In case you're well-meaning, you would do well to find a copy of How it Feels to Be Something On, and a lot of people like The Rising Tide (their last record). But it's not going to make you a fan of anything new, and I (and any other SDRE fan) accept no responsibility if you decide that it wasn't worth your time after all.

JerseyTim: Let me know when The Promise Ring reunited and tours.

YES.

I loved The Promise Ring when I was 15, beyond their cheesy-ass name.

Ewww. Wake me when the Stone Roses release their thing.

bobbette: I loved The Promise Ring when I was 15, beyond their cheesy-ass name.

It really was a cheesy name. I saw them play three or four times in high school. I'd love to see what that crowd looks like today.

appetite4destruction 2009-06-24 12:15:42 AM
Can't wait.

Followed The Fire Theft for a while and saw a bunch of their shows. and Enigk's solo tour.

A lot of people never heard of SDRE. I didn't know who they were until their last album, The Rising Tide (which is brilliant). I fell in love with them when I heard them.

as with any band, you will either like them or not. assuming that because you've never heard of them means they suck is rather stupid, don't you think?

also, associating them with 'emo' is misleading. although, they were one of the original emo bands. back when the term 'emo' actually meant something. now, it's just a bunch of whiny dudes who put on a 'harcore-but-sensitive' charade so they can fark high school girls.

back on topic, this is the best news from the music world in a LONG time.

frostus [TotalFark] 2009-06-24 12:28:18 AM
Not sure why this is directed at the over-30 crowd. My son and his buddies (28 this year) have been fans for years. The first I heard of SDRE was when my son's band recorded a cover version of Rodeo Jones for an SDRE tribute site which I see no longer exists.

I'm 20 and I find this awesome. I'm also a fan of Jawbreaker. The only modern day or "post-emo" I listen to is Brand New, which I think some of the older fans of Sunny Day might appreciate, as both they and Jawbreaker were major influences on the band.

SoupGuru 2009-06-24 01:02:23 AM
I got big into LP2 a number of years ago, heard they had broken up and was sad. Then I heard they were back together and I was happy and got The Rising Tide, which was really good. Then they broke up again. Then I got into their other albums and realized I would probably never get to see their live show, which I figured would be spectacular. Then I heard of the Fire Theft a couple of years ago and they were coming to town. I was pretty happy when I saw them... I mean they were pretty much SDRE but they played none of the songs I loved.

And then today, I see they're getting back together! And touring! And playing in my town! Holy crap! All those years of disappointment that I'd never see them live now turned to pure joy.... and then my wife told me we have to be out of town for a wedding that day...

SuperCatBarf [TotalFark] 2009-06-24 01:14:02 AM
I like SDRE, but to be honest I liked Enigk's solo record "Return of the Frog Queen" even better. Still, if they play a small club I'll check it out.

Same here. I just found this out a couple hours ago and realized Atlanta, as much as I hate it, is the place to go. I have way too much invested in out of state concerts.

They were Wesley Willis' favorite band.

appetite4destruction 2009-06-24 03:01:41 AM
Wesley Willis was a crazy dude. He sold me a CD which he signed. and signed my friend's HS gym shirt.

ROTFQ is also a great album.

didn't Enigk find God or something?

So, it's safe to say that they never existed, then.

New York on a farking Sunday?

... I'll be there, fark yes.

They played at the shiattiest venue in all of New York last month, and I didn't hear about it until it had sold out anyway. I had figured they were only doing Warped Tour or whatever.

Phew! This whole time I was listening to them I thought they were pretty good, but thanks to you telling me they were never that popular I realize the error I've made. Remember everyone, popular opinion is ALWAYS what you must conform to. I'm headed to Wal-Mart to get some black-eye peas albums, anyone want some unpopular Sunny Day albums?

Why so defensive? Did I hit an unaimmed at nerve?

You missed my point which is: They weren't that popular so their reuniting isn't that big of a deal in the over scheme of things.

I didn't say they were crappy or that people who like them had no taste or were jerks (although after reading your post...)

And they do have a stupid name. Maybe that's why they were never that popular; the vast majority of people couldn't get past the lame name...

Besides, as has been pointed out here repeatedly, we all like music that other people think sucks.

HumanSnatcher 2009-06-24 11:16:37 AM
I recently starting getting into them about a week ago before this and listening to Diary from my phone right now. Yeah, they may be "emo", but they were around before the whole wussification of the genre. To me, I hear a lot more indie college rock from around that time period.

/is starting to get back into more 80's-90's idie/alt/whatever rock of that time period
//next up to delve into is Dinosaur Jr...been meaning for years to get into them

Comic Book Guy 2009-06-24 11:21:53 AM
I'm really not familiar with their music, but I always thought bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Archers of Loaf, Propagandhi had names that were a perfect fit to stay on college radio.

No love for Diary here? That one was pretty much the only one I got really into, LP2 was good but I never even heard their stuff after the first breakup. Regardles, I'll probably check out the show and then cry myself to sleep.

It's certainly a lot more jawbreaker-esque than jets to brazil. I heard June 30th was a tentative release date.

Respectfully disagrees. Although your choice is a fantastic record as well.

Since when have they been considered emo? I've always liked this band as well as the Fire Theft and Enigk's solo stuff, but I never thought of them as emo. Oh well. Maybe I don't know what it means.

It's like modern rock - it is what it is at the time. Today emo is Fall Out Boy, in 2000 it was Dashboard Confessional, in 1995 it was Texas is the Reason, and in 1990 it was Jawbreaker.

/way too many great bands to list them here

This tour could ONLY be made better if Brand New were to open.... saw Enigk on his solo tour in 2006, right before he was to open for Brand New in Europe. He had to back off that tour due to illness.
