I understand that they have to draw the line somewhere but, I think they could be a little more lenient if the minor in question is 17.

The kid could walk into a recruiting office and sign up for military service under the delayed entry program. 17 is evidently old enough to make decisions regarding your life, but not old enough to make decisions about sex.

Actually, sex with someone under the age of eighteen is legal as long as you are not more than three years their senior.

I do not recall if that is a state or federal law.

Also, legally speaking sexual interaction is usually only looked down on in a situation where the other party cannot be believed to give consent.

That's why they frown on college professors who sleep with their students and correctional officers who sleep with their inmates.
