Er... W T F?! So HM Customs can't x-ray containers because of the small chance people might be hiding in them? This is common practice in the US and Canada (especially in the US, heh), and not just for sea containers but rail cars and semi trailers as well; basically anything that isn't supposed to have people in it can and often does get x-rayed. Stowaways on Mexican trains headed into the US are often caught because they show up on the x-ray.

X-rays are not good for you, but getting x-rayed once as a stowaway in a container is not going to harm you more than a chest x-ray at the doctor's office. Plus, hiding in a container is illegal already, so suck it up...

Shipping containers being metal and such, the x-rays used to scan them have the be dialed up, (radiation wise) bigtime, since regular medical-grade x-rays aren't powerful enough to get through steel. Why do you think you can see metal at all in a medical x-ray?

So getting scanned with an industrial x-ray imager that can penetrate steel would be bad. The same thing can be said about going through the x-ray machine at the airport too I might add.
