That's pre-9/11 thinking, subby. Harrassing people, suspension of Habeas Corpus, unlimited detentions, information extraction through enhanced interrogation techniques- these are all required steps in keeping you safe, Citizen. If you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear.

Why do you hate America and those that would protect it?

"You can expect we will continue to do it whenever and wherever we wish, and there is no requirement that we justify ourselves or explain our reasons."

When asked whether a government act violates the Fourth Amendment, courts ask whether the act is a customary exercise of power or something new. A violation of rights, if not challenged, gains legitimacy through seniority.

They're just getting people used to how a police state operates. You can't just oppress everyone suddenly, it has to be done slowly in order to make it go down easier.

Owners of private aircraft are certainly a minority, but powerless? Lacking in political muscle?

I haven't heard of any lobby specializing in the interests of small plane owners, have you?

Do you think the Congressmen with private planes get searched at gunpoint? Private pilots can count on a lot of support over issues like landing slot and airspace allocation that affect politicians too. I don't know that they'll get much help here.

Remember when Ted Kennedy was put on the no-fly list? We still have a no-fly list. It just contains a note to keep hands off important politicians.

'Complaints to Homeland Security higher ups about these "routine checks" were answered by spokeswoman Kelly Ivahnenko with a statement that said, and I accurately paraphrase, "we maintain we have this power and authority, you can expect we will continue to do it whenever and wherever we wish, and there is no requirement that we justify ourselves or explain our reasons."'

Accurate paraphrase?
That oxymoronic phrase belongs in the same category as "world's tallest midget".
A paraphrase is, by definition, not an accurate quote.
While I believe that the Freeper in question perceived the spokeswoman's word as having that meaning, there's no way in hell they actually said it anything like that. If you want us to take your wharblgarbl eve halfway seriously, get a verbatim quote.

What article? It's a blog post with no factual back-up. Though I admit that I could be wrong, there was no way I was going to read that whole thing.

I compare us to RV owner-operators, as these airplanes are equivalent in price range to the RVs and campers so many Americans own and enjoy.

If you've been here long enough to know that the 'A' in FTFA means 'article', you've been here long enough to know that it implies no authority/accuracy/sanity in the link's contents.

Vanetia: I haven't heard of any lobby specializing in the interests of small plane owners, have you?

First hit on Google for "private pilots organization" is the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association^ whose website prominently features a Government Advocacy page (link goes to said page). No doubt there are many such orgs, and it's a fair certainty that their memberships are largely wealthy.
I'm not claiming they're an effective lobby or that they're concerned with civil rights issues, but it's disingenuous and lazy to say that private plane owners are unrepresented.

You're showing your lack of sophistication....

I can buy many different types of small prop planes for under $50K... I can also easily spend $500k for a typical RV.

The small plane lobby is AOPA. More importantly, there are a lot of small plane owners and pilots in Congress.

AOPA has been around since 1939 and they have some clout. I've been flying private planes all over the country for 25 years and have never gotten a ramp check, much less a search with guns drawn.

You may now continue to panic.

"we maintain we have this power and authority, you can expect we will continue to do it whenever and wherever we wish, and there is no requirement that we justify ourselves or explain our reasons."

Yeah, because that's exactly how I expect a trained governmental spokesman to speak. While the spokesman appears to be real, I don't see any other reports about this except on aviation blogs and they all appear to be variations of the same report.

That doesn't change the fact that apples != oranges.

Or the fact that those among us who can spend $50K plus on a hobby are rarely oppressed.

The government would argue (rightly or wrongly) that a plane that is registered in Wyoming and flies to Washington and refuels would be engaged in interstate commerce.

Do you think average joe public has had anywhere near the background checking and security clearance a senator has? Next you be moaning about fighter pilots being able to carry missles on their planes.

Senators have security clearances by holding office, not because they passed a background check.

And one could para-rephrase that into boilerplate law enforcement disclaimers.

Still, good to keep an eye on them. Never be complacent, wot wot. They are wielding an authority which needs to be monitored.
