Ethnic cleansing? Subby must have confused Greenland with Quebec.

What would "Greenland Independence" accomplish? There are 57,000 people there - about half the amount that live in my town. It's not like the greenlanders were missing any basic freedoms and they already for a long time had effective local government over local matters.

An independent greenland becomes one where its citizens suddenly have to subsidize the duplication of creation and maintenance of all sorts of things that before they got for free. The EU/EEC have succeeded brilliantly, economically speaking, because the people there have realized that maybe just maybe, the age of feudalism and sacrosant-country-borders such as the ones between holland and belgium is over. (Yes, of course there are some problems with the EU/EEC, but on the whole it has been a monumental success in terms of raising living standards through enabling economic activity).

A nation of 57,000 people with one university with 150 enrolled students is a joke.

As I understand the situation, they want control over their own natural resources and development. I don't see how the size of the population involved influences this basic human need for self-governance.

This part isn't, though:

Much of the oil, gas, gold and diamonds the island holds has been inaccessible because of the Arctic ice covering most of the land mass.

But US experts believe it will become easier to exploit the island's mineral wealth as global warming melts the ice sheets.

Independence advocates hope the expected increase in revenues from minerals will help fund a final breakaway from Copenhagen.

And maybe the Inuit are sick of Danish cops and bureaucrats, who knows?

The EU might have reduced customs and immigration checks but it just added more layers of bureaucracy on top of the existing ones. Took away some blue collar border control jobs and created a new elite class of transcontinental parliamentarians

I don't see how the size of the population involved influences this basic human need for self-governance.</i>

By this logic, any group of people who happen to live in a resource-rich area should have the right to claim something or other (we are a nation based on the fact that we all play video blackjack) and then declare independence and fark over the rest of the population of the larger area. Oh wait - we already have that - Kuwait and Brunei are wonderful examples of this. In both cases, the far larger population that didn't happen to be sitting on that microscopic dot of resources were denied the resources and lived lives of poverty and ruin while the priviliged few in the cachement area lived like kings.

I'm not talking about "wealth distribution" in some socialist sense here. But what I am saying is that national borders are incredibly non-condusive to free markets - this is why an idiot cashier in san diego who had all the chance in the world at a proper education and meaningful job can live a comfortable life with a car, computer, and decent shelter that a person doing an equivalent job accross the border could only dream about). where practical, such as between two modern democratic areas, we need to be taking down borders, not putting more up.

It's true. Greasy but not bad.

Beware of Eskimo and Inuit jokesters that think it's funny to tell tourists that dipping whale blubber in rancid seal oil is a delicacy as well.

For those of you moderately confused:

America/Canada=Vinnland

Leif Ericksson traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and disembarked at what is now Newfoundland while more ships landed South of him during his exploration. From historical records and archaeological evidence his crew and armed troops (since they didn't know what would be there) eventually reached what is now Virginia.

Also; the Danes didn't enforce, practice or preach ethnic cleansing - that would be Sweden during this time with Norway maintaining an isolationist and insanely armed militia and feudalist basis for their exploits. It's also worth noting that Denmark had a democratic basis for laws, based on age and (stop laughing) beard length.

For a real piece of 'WHAT THE?!' history: While the men were gone exploring, trading and going to war against (now) France and England for their continual encroachment into their territories, the women maintained law and order and even DEFENSE. Yes, you read that right.

/But thanks to anti-Scandinavian sentiment in VERY large parts of the Eastern Seaboard during the 19th century we don't celebrate Leif Ericksson Day as our national holiday of discovery. We give it to a drunken Italian that couldn't read a map and was a dismal failure with, literally, ten times the men, technology, equipment and money Ericksson had.
//Nice little piece of very dark American history that gets glossed over. Wonder why Chicago has such a large amount of Polish? Same reason. Anglo/Saxons: Morons. For over a thousand years.

0Icky0 2009-06-21 05:59:17 PM

Jedekai: going to war against (now) France and England for their continual encroachment into their territories

The Anglo-Saxons and Franks invaded Denmark?
Wait, wait; so why don't they speak Hindi in Portugal? Because wasn't it settled by Indians from Apachistan?

/so confused, I think.

DanRankin 2009-06-21 06:05:05 PM
Jedekai; i'm not 100% up on this, but i think it's been proven that the english where not Anglo/saxon. those clans won a few wars and suddenly everyone was.

not that i care. go back far enough and there where ppl from turkey the where some of the original Rankin's.
/in scotch gaelich we where called 'MacFrang', and thats not spelled right. its how it kinda sounds.
