In my opinion:
The Pabst and the Landshark are garbage.
The Harpoon, the Sam Adams, and the Erdinger are passable mediocrities.
The Ommegang and the Sierra Nevada are solid examples of their styles.
The Stone, the Saison Dupont, and the Victory are world class beers.

I need to try the new Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss. It might be a great summer beer.

My summer beers?

While floating the river, in the pool etc: Miller Lite

Elsewhere: New Belgium Sunshine Wheat. That stuff is just delicious.

I've never thought I'd see both Ommegang and PBR in the same list.

Yeah, both have been in my fridge in the past 3 months, but I wouldnt give the PBR any kind of press outside of "its cheap, and if you want a beer out at the lake, it's classic"

Classic /= good

mattyc 2009-06-21 02:34:49 PM

I think an unseen force guides my life.

When I was young, and went hunting with my father, we rented a place in Pottsville, PA.

Then I later found out we lived just down the block from the owners of Victory Brewery.

Later I bought a house near Ommegang brewery.

Now I live in Alexandria, VA. What should I look for here?

Green Scorpio 2009-06-21 02:36:47 PM
Any list that contains Pabst cannot be taken seriously.

bhorvic 2009-06-21 02:38:08 PM
PBR isn't a great beer by any means but I still drink it all the time.

PBR and Landshark? Really?

jayhawk88 2009-06-21 02:39:21 PM
dholway: The Pabst and the Landshark are garbage.

Anyone else care to weigh in on the Landshark? My local beer shop has been displaying this prominently for quite a while now, and I've been hesitant as it looked kind of gimmicky, but still it's not going away. Thinking about giving it a shot.

Also just to give my own recommendation, Levity Ale:

http://www.odellbrewing.com/beers/classics/levity_ale.aspx

Odell in general is pretty good, I really like the Easy Street and the IPA as well.

I know the beer snobs are going to bury me when I say this, but I am highly approving of PBR being on this list. I Really do like my upper shelf beers, but it makes no sense to me to buy a bunch of those if I have to fill my fridge for a get-together. PBR is my favorite cheap beer, hell it won a blue ribbon!

#6. Pabst Blue Ribbon

9. Landshark Lager

It's alright, nothing special. I'm not a huge fan of lagers anymore, but if it's reasonably priced I'll drink it instead of the Busch/Miller swill any day.

7. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

My circle of beer snobs is divided. Those from the West or the West Coast like it. Those from the Southeast seem to find that every Sierra Nevada beer tastes the same, be it Pale Ale, Porter, or whatever. I've long known the Pale Ale and have tried the Porter on occasion, and I find there's a little credibility to this claim. If I'm going to spend close to $10 on a porter, I'll buy a true porter. Craft and micro beer prices in America have risen recently due to the recent hops shortage, which has made British beers all the more reasonably priced. I'll default to Fuller's Porter, and if I'm in the mood to spend a little extra, I'll hunt down a Manchester Star (it's labeled technically as an Ale, but it tastes and is marketed as a porter.)

6. Pabst Blue Ribbon

There's nothing wrong with cheap beer in private. I will not, however, give hipsters the satisfaction of seeing me drink PBR. There's a better beer in the identical price range - Southpaw Light. The student body at a Quaker School in Greensboro hipped me to it years ago, and I think it delivers both in taste and in the $.10 less per bottle than PBR.

5. Sam Adams Summer Ale

I don't understand the fascination of adding fruit to ales and lagers. If I want to drink a haughty Belgain Ale, I'll drink an Ommagang or Three Philosophers. I'll take my summer ale light and without fruit, please - I have testicles, after all.

4. Ommegang Witte Ale

As I just said, there are two different kinds of beer to drink during the summer. This is the kind of beer which is acceptable to flavor with fruit - because Belgian beers are practically wine. I still like Three Philosophers better, though.

3. Harpoon Summer

I don't like pilsners, unless they are brewed in the old country, because 90% of American brewers have no farking clue what barley to use. Please, Harpoon, stick to your IPA. I've already had to chide your cross-harbor neighbors at Samual Adams.

The beers I have yet to taste:

10. Victory Prima Pils

I will approach it with some trepidation, because I believe American breweries fundamentally fail to understand the pilsner. Imagine if an American company were to try and distill a version of Becherovka.

8. Saison Dupont Farmhouse Ale

Another in the vein of Ommegang or Three Philosophers. If I see it for a reasonable price (which in eastern NC means less than $10) I shall try it.

2. Stone Cali-Belgique IPA

The high gravity is alluring, but alas they hype it's heavy hoppiness. While I refuse to follow some of my fellow beer snobs in the doctrine of Everything In America is Over-Hopped, I find using hop quantity as a selling point to be an indication of marketing against good taste.

1. Erdinger Weissbier

I wouldn't mind trying a new wheat beer, but don't try and tell me it needs fruit.

I do not like it either. I would put it on par with the standard generics (Bud, Miller, etc.).

Tried some last spring, good lord was it awful. It's one of the few beers on my "didn't finish the 6-pack" list.

I will always and forever be a Guinness girl, but I like SNPA too.
Right now however, I have a new love for the Blue Moon's Honeymoon Summer Ale.

grantjoy 2009-06-21 02:45:22 PM
That list sucked. Here is one from me:

1. Lagunitas IPA
2. Anchor Steam
3. Firestone Walker California Pale Ale
4. Anderson Valley IPA
5. Stone Ruination IPA
6. Lost Coast Great White
7. Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale
8. New Belgium Abbey
9. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (that one was deserved)
10. and of course Keystone Light

Green Scorpio: Any list that contains Pabst cannot be taken seriously.

My guess is he's trying to show he's hip with the kids. There are a thousand beers that could replace PBR on that list. Anything from Deschutes Brewery comes to mind. A cask conditioned ale from Bridgeport Ale House always hits the spot. as well. Then again, I live five minutes from microbrew capital of the U.S. so it's easy for me to have a different favorite each week.

Oh, and Labatt's is the nastiest shiate I've ever drank. I couldn't even finish a single can of that crap. Who buys that shiate anyway? Sorry, I had to get that out of my system.

Sam's Quik Shop in Durham is pretty fantastic, although you do have to approach perilously close to Duke.

I have some too, they are currently in a drawer, what's that got to do with fruit in beer?

I just moved out of Wisconsin, and I'm really going to miss New Glarus Spotted Cow. It's not the best beer they make, but it's available at just about every bar and restaurant in the state, so I ended up drinking a ton of it. A perfect light, summer beer.

It's very much like Red Stripe, in my opinion. If I'm at the lake, someone has it on ice, and they are offering it to me, I'll drink a couple. Pretty much the same with Miller, Coors, Bud, and the rest like them. Ice cold in the heat... and they'll hit the spot.

I have no interest in actually buying any of them. I'm a beer snob in my own house. Not so much when other people are buying.

none of my favs are on the list, so the list sucks.
