Highlights of 6/20/09:

Protestors were violently blocked today from getting to Azadi and Englehab Squares by massive armed presence. This seems to be a direct result of Khamenei's speech and orders to meet protestors with violence. Protests happened in cities all over the country, and have been met with brutality. There are reports of protestors fighting back, even having burned down at least one Basij headquarter. One mosque was burned in Tehran with protestors inside it, though casualties are not known.

The government report that a suicide bomber struck at the shrine of Imam Khomeini, inflicting heavy damage and deaths, have NOT been verified. Iranian TV has been airing videoed "confessions" of Iranian youth saying that they had been recruited and trained to cause this disturbance by the UK, Israeli, and US governments.

Confirmed:
- at least 19 deaths, including what is becoming an iconic video of a young woman's graphic death
- authorities using water cannons, tear gas, and clubs on protestors (male and female, with some reports that the women are being beaten as hard if not harder than the men)
- helicopters dropping some sort of agent on protestors (likely CS). Khamenei claimed it was water to cool the protestors, Twitter reports that it burned and blinded people (it was NOT white phosphorous - burning sensation was consistent with CS)
- Basij using concrete-weighted PVC pipes as weapons.
- Basij marking doorways of protestor's homes
- At least one unit of the Iranian Police begged protestors for calm and peace
- Ministry of Culture on Saturday banned international media from reporting on the demonstrations unless they receive permission from Iranian authorities
- Iranian government has agreed to recount 10% of the votes, chosen at random
- Electricity was cut to many Tehran neighbourhoods on Saturday evening
- Mousavi issued a long statement today that asked protestors to remain peaceful (and not take revenge on the Basij), and demanded a new election. He also stated his readiness to become a martyr and asked iranians to strike in the event of his arrest.
- Hospitals have been recognized as unsafe, as Basij are laying in wait and taking injured people away
-Mousavi's news has been compromised and should not be trusted!
-Mousavi isn't arrested, any reports of it are considered misinformation

Things We're Gathering More Information/Confirmation On:

-Tanks moving into Tehran. More tweets coming in confirming the tanks. We don't know if its IRG, Army, or Basij using them. PK, CfI and knv have said that they do not know of any armored units moving into the city. PK believes its a hoax sent out by the government. Those that claimed to have seen it are RTs or 5+ hours old
-Basij waiting outside embassies for wounded. Sparse reports of it, not considered confirmed yet
-Whether or not Hizbollah from outside Iran has come to the government's aid. We have reason to believe Iranian Hizbollah (Anser) is being used. No confirmation on Lebanese Hizbollah or Hamas, rumors abound though of arabic speaking police, sparking this.
-What is occuring in other cities around Iran, such as Rasht
-Whether earlier reports of a section of Tehran (Eastern, I believe) was secured by protesters. They could very well have secured it at one point, but it could've been lost, not that light has fallen
-Acid from helicopters still thought to be tear gas/CS gas plus water. Symptoms seem to be consistent with those.
-Khemeini reported to have been taken to a military base for safety
-The status of the military and whether the Army and IRG are going to come out against the government. The IRG is the new police force, but it is rumored that they refuse to fire on civilians. One of the Grand Ayatollahs, who is against the SA, claims to have the backing of the army. more confirmations are needed
-Whether the report from the Assembly of Experts was a hoax or not regarding their support of the Supreme Ayatollah. If so, what is the statement from them
-Mullahs marching with protesters in Mashdad
- Several Embassies are accepting injured iranians, and have asked for doctors to come forward
-Rasfanjani's daughter was arrested, unknown if she's been released yet

I'm still trying to piece together stuff too. but what i do know is that Mousavi was rumored to be arrested, but isnt. his news source is compromised though. Rasfanjani's daughter was arrested and there is no confirmation that she's been released.

state TV last night also claimed that the MKO (Iraqi paramilitary force, i believe) is behind terrorist attacks and members have been arrested. what that means isnt really clear

Good morning people, and now here's some updates on the news:

Repression stepped up yet again as Iran becomes world's biggest prison for journalists (new window).

In Tehran, an eerie calm as death toll jumps to 17 (new window).

Iran asks BBC reporter to leave (new window).

Jon Lee Anderson: Understanding The Basij (new window).

Iranians hold mass rally in Paris
(new window).

And, from the Twitter fron:

RT from Iran: About 10,000 ppl Siting on Street at Gisha St. (North Tehran) No Police till now! #iranelection #Neda #gr88

@IranTweet Operation Remove Veil! Stand up against supreme leader. Let them arrest all women! -#iranelection
(This is akin to suicide).

We are saddened to report that LIFE's Iranian photojournalist is missing - http://bit.ly/Y5oLk - #iran #iranelection #tehran

BBC CNN have NOT confirmed Mousavi arrest. Stop w/the misinformaton, pls. check sources before RTing. #iranelection #gr88

----

Seems that now the regime is trying to force the journalists out, instead of just isolating them. What's next, the embassies. Will they turn into the next North Korea? Will they attack the embassies? There was rumor that the Basij were waiting for them near the embassies, but I haven't heard from that in a while. We'll need to confirm with the official iranian twitters.

Keek up the good fight, don't forget we're watching. And most importantly: Do not turn into the Basij.

And now, some music (new window).

CNN had an awful 30 min summary of the Iran election and aftermath and, while that was on at 4 in the morning (EST), Fox had Shep Smith live providing not only solid analysis of what's going on, but also getting into the ramifications their actions hold for new media and how a lot of this might not have been possible without it.

Never thought I'd see Fox be lightyears ahead of CNN in anything.

Smith has been consistently badass through the whole thing. He's making me watch FOX News, goddamnit, I'm torn between raging at my TV, succumbing to self-loathing and staring at the screen.

FTA: State media also reported at least 10 more deaths, bringing the official toll for a week of confrontations to at least 17.

Given earlier reports that the Iranian gov was hiding/taking bodies, and the fact that anything objective in this regard is hard to come by, I think it's a safe bet that the number is much, much higher.

Attacking an embassy could very well result in WWIII. I really hope they aren't dumb enough to try it.

Smith is generally one of the good guys, so I'm not shocked about his personal involvement in the reporting. I'm just surprised that FNC had live coverage at 4 am.

While CNN had an awful rundown of the situation (they would have been better off simply having an anchor read Tatsuma's update on the air)

And MSNBC had their weekend long "Lockup: Raw" marathon (facepalm)

Which brings me to these next questions: Did the protesters left the embassies, or did they stayed overnight? Are they taking refuge in them?.

They have been more or less all along on this issue. Glenn Beck, of all people, was one of the first in the US to start giving this coverage.

My opinion of Fox News isn't very high normally, but I must give them credit in this issue.

This scares the heck out of me. I know there was a tweet early on about removing the veil and then another frantic one saying no, it's not the time. We had an article in the paper today about the protestors here in town. One related visiting her family in Iran and getting thrown in jail just because a bit of hair was sticking out. I can't imagine the risk these women would run to throw off the veil completely. I am also unsure if this would turn tradionalists away from the protestors.

I don't think much will happen till Monday, if much happens at all after this point. The government has made clear there isn't gonna be an upper limit on their brutality, so now the protesters have to decide if this is important enough to die for.

Sure, they could have always been killed, but now the government is straight on trying to kill them. Whereas before shootings were isolated and seem largely to be the work of panicked or sadistic individuals, now it's in the orders.

If this continues in big numbers on Monday, I don't see it stopping until they are rounded up or things change. If you know they have guns and will shoot you, and you've probably seen or heard of someone being shot, and you're still willing to go out, I'm not sure what it would take to scare you into submission.

last thread got closed up before i was able to post this comment about the video of the girl getting shot thru the chest.

not for nothing but i've heard 2 names for this girl. neda and rascha, and in the video from :05 on you can clearly hear her called rascha more than a few times. the only thing most people have left when they die is a name and a legacy. it appears she's lost one of those. now i understand the power behind making her name neda, considering it's meaning in farsi and how that helps the revolution, but it's extremely disrespectful to her and her family that there is such an outpouring of grief and emotion but yet no one bothers to care about getting her name right.

/just had to get that off my chest.

If you know they have guns and will shoot you, and you've probably seen or heard of someone being shot, and you're still willing to go out, I'm not sure what it would take to scare you into submission.

um, there are supposed to be more protests today and if yesterday is any indication, things are just gonna get worse as the days go on

rippinthegears: Wow Iran kicked out the BBC?

If I remember the article correctly, they kicked out a BBC reporter. I think it said the office itself would remain open.
