you're welcome, subby. if we don't get some more good death/grind/black/thrash/doom metal etc. around here, im just going to have to do the SHMHC myself from now on.

sorry snuff3r but Killswitch is not death metal.

Metraxis 2009-06-21 12:56:56 PM
As the genre goes, not bad, though they could have skipped the secondary riff from Creeping Death at the end there.

Damn, With it being Father's Day, I thought I had a lock on this, as my video was Immolation's Father, You're Not a Father.

Concerning the video, I'd have to say that it was very pedestrian death metal, but I applaud these Iranians for doing what they wish, and helping to spread metal.

From that region, I'm going to have to stick with Darkestrah (Excerpt from an awesome 30-minute song), and for Death Metal from weird places, I'm going to stay with Crackdust.

Thanks. My first SHMHC submission too. These guys were much better than I was expecting, even if they're pretty ordinary by world standards. But to hear something like that coming from Iran was quite a surprise.

For a few things I've been listening to lately:

Mechanism - Awake: prog death metal from 2009 featuring Gene Hoglan. Kind of an odd mix of metal genres. Some good stuff, but I'm not sure I really like it.

Deathrow - Triocton: from 1989's Deception Ignored. A classic instrumental.

Kvist - Ars Manifestia: from 1996's For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike. Black metal in the Scandinavian style with some twists.

Demise - Icarus: awesome Polish melodic death metal from 1997 in the In Flames style.

Peter_Veal 2009-06-21 02:16:02 PM
Much like the rest of my father's day gifts, that's a big bowl of "meh" right there.

I just listened to that album like 10 minutes ago. Very underated band, even if they are a lesser clone of later Artillery.

huh. not too shabby. i didn't know they listened to dying fetus in Iran...
man, i just woke up from this crazy dream where i was hanging out with dave mustaine and getting stoned. farking weird. anywho...
Agathocles - A For Arrogance (live)
Cripple Bastards - I hate her. awesome Italian powerviolence/grind.
Burnt By The Sun - Forlani. Dave Witte on drums, nuff said? oh, and it's not total grindcore...
Spazz - Crush Kill Destroy with extra-Spazzy lyrical interpretation. farkin' hilarious. i love spazz.
Spazz - Now 50% More Pants-shiatting. the intro is weird but cool.
His Hero Is Gone - Like Weeds. some good crusty political hardcore. an old standby...
Ghoul - Mechanized Death. awesome head-banging gore-grind. members of exhumed. epic. ill.
Exhumed - The Matter of Splatter. i lurv exhumed.
Splatterhouse - Night of the Creeps. video made with footage that the song is based on. pretty awesome gory, gory grind. also a pretty awesome gory, gory film.

word. have fun hating all my music.

thedeadshallwalktheearth666:
epic username. we need more grind. and more doooooom.

Here's some of what I've been listening to recently:

Dalriada: Hazatérés
- Thanks to Bigsnatch for recommending this band to me. Amazing Hungarian Folk Metal band with a male and female singer. Lots of two part harmonies. This band shows an incredible amount of versatility in their work. They're way too talented to be as obscure as they are. I had to order their 4 albums from Hungary and they are aboslutely worth it. This song starts off a little slow but is a crecendo of pure win.

AMORPHIS: Sky is Mine - Another incredible release by Finnish Metal legends Amorphis. This aptly-named band continues to avoid any specific genre. This band's influences are numerous and they are incredibly adept at blending them and constantly presenting them in new ways. I think their previous release 'Silent Waters' barely edges it out as their best album but this one is definately up there. Plus the cover is beautiful.

groverXIII 2009-06-21 03:45:03 PM
The video was alright... fairly routine as far as death metal goes, although the fact that they're from Iran means that it's probably been a lot tougher for them. The drummer was pretty unimpressive, though.

I downloaded this but haven't gotten to it yet...

Some stuff I've been listening to this week:

Korpiklaani - Karkelo: Korpiklaani's new album, although at this point it's just a crappy quality web rip. As for the music, well, it's Korpiklaani... at this point they're kind of the AC/DC of folk metal. You know exactly what you're going to get from them, and it's probably going to be pretty damn entertaining.

Leprous - Tall Poppy Syndrome: Interesting prog-death metal... there's a lot of Opeth influence there, but they're not a direct ripoff. Definitely worth a listen.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Oracles: Classically-influenced tech-death. I'd like to thank whomever mentioned them last week (I can't remember who you are), because these guys are great.

Killswitch Engage - Killswitch Engage (the new one): I know that KSE isn't as tr00 or kvlt as a lot of stuff that will get mentioned today, but the new album is actually really good. Definitely an improvement over the last album. I'm digging it.

DevilDriver - Pray For Villains: Okay, I only listened to it once, and it was okay... not sure if it's going to grow on me. None of DD's previous stuff has, and I don't think this will be any different.

Gorod - Process Of A New Decline: Yes, I'm still listening to this. Farking incredible album, and I recommend it to anyone who likes tech-death.

Worst band I've ever had to suffer through. They opened for Opeth so it was worth it.

I'm assuming you mean Skyforger? That said... your description is perfect, right down to 'Silent Waters' being slightly better and their best album.

Of course, there is the small matter of the album cover looking a lot like A Static Lullaby's 'Faso Latido' cover.

You be the judge.

Yeah, they've never really impressed me, but I usually check out their albums to see if they've made anything worthwhile. Usually, they haven't... generic metalcore with the guy from Coal Chamber as the vocalist.

Their new video for 'Pray For Villains' is comical as well.

Wow man, I am glad that you like them so much! They are pretty amazing and like I said, they do nearly everything right. Dalriada is a great example of a band that fires on all cylinders at all times. I think the best way to skyrocket their popularity would be to make their music more readily available and to make sure they tour the United States.

Right now I am listening a lot to band called Fjoergyn (new window). They are a mix of Folk and Viking Metal and they have some truly Epic feeling music when they want to. Evidence is in the chorus of the linked song.

They are definitely a grower. I think the main draw of them is that at times they remind me of Moonsorrow. The only other band that reminds me of Moonsorrow is Myrkgrav. Obviously neither of these bands actually is Moonsorrow, but I hear some similarities and those similarities are what I like.

Glad we agree on 'Skyforger' and 'Silent Waters'. Oddly enough 'Tuonela' is the album that got me hooked on Amorphis. Love that album, very unique.

Yeah, Tuonela's a good album, but I definitely like the direction they took with the last 3 albums. Phenomenal stuff, and they stand out from a lot of other metal bands.

Anything Burnt by The Sun = awesome. I recently re-acquired their EP from 1999 or so (Fish under the sea Dance, You Will Move, Lizard Skin Barbie and Buffy) so I have been in a big BBTS mood lately. They are also recording one last album as we speak.

A good start!

anyways, is it sadistic of me that when i see those kidz bop commercials, that i think to myself how awesome it would be to hear a bunch of small children singing "Angel of Death" or some Dark Funeral? Perhaps even some Grief. Real sunshine music, ya know?

and yes, more DOOM is required. pinky demons optional.

The closest I'm aware of is when they did 'Wake Me Up' by Evanescence... not exactly death metal, but there's just something about a crapload of kids singing "Save me from the nothing I've become" that warms my black heart.

I hate drums. In general, I just hate them. They can be good, especially when it's played with the guitar riff and easy to headbang to. But mostly, whenever I here bass drums, I just get annoyed. Anyone know of good death/black metal that uses minimalistic druming?

groverXIII: I downloaded this but haven't gotten to it yet...

Like Salem 1692? Seriously, you should listen to it!

In other news, I can't beleive I've gone this long without having Rotting Christ's Theogonia. Melodic, epic, and mixed with elements of greek folk music, Theogonia has to be Sakis masterpiece.

SPna15: Also: New Drudkh preview.

Wow. What a terrible guitar solo. It always amazes me when bands think that bluesy licks fit with black or death metal. It's strange because the guitar solos on Blood in Our Wells were pretty good. Hopefully the guitar solos like this are few and far between.

What an odd comment. IMO, drumming is really the core of death metal. Athletic double bass drumming is sort of a prerequisite.

That said, how about Portal?

SPna15 2009-06-21 08:45:34 PM
loser_death_spiral: That said, how about Portal?

Ugh, don't get me started on Portal. The "ugh" comes more from the hype than anything else. They are (last I recall) fairly standard black metal. Nothing too stand-out or exceptional. Not bold and expiermental like they are claimed to be.

I have no idea how someone can hate drumming. However, if all you listen to is metal I can see why. Triggered bass drums sound terrible.

I'm totally the opposite - I love a good rumbling drum track. But I might be able to help you out here. I think you might want to check out a Norwegian band called Vreid. They had an album called "I Krig" that definitely qualifies as minimalistic drumming, at least as far as most black metal goes. It didn't do much for me, partially due to that lack of bass drums, but you might want to give it a whirl.
