Meh. He always struck me as the frat boy of CSNY. Most of his songs come off like he's just trying to talk some groupie into bed.

Stills wrote some great songs, but not for a long time. Last good one I can think of is Southern Cross.

This is the latest in a long line of music tab posts that made me think, "hey, wait a minute" and then three seconds later think, "you know, they're absolutely right".

You just did. That's my favorite Springfield song.

like most of that bunch, and many others, he got a free ride based on very little awesome output

It pretty much was all down hill after the first CS&N album wasn't it? He was the de-facto producer, wrote the best songs on the album, played all of the keyboard and bass parts etc. Damn that Neil Young and his superior songwriting skills!

My favorite "got a free ride based on very little awesome output" example is John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas. I still see articles/mentions that routinely toss around the word "genius" in connection with him but that's based on maybe a dozen songs, if that.

The REAL story on Mr. Stills is here:

Someone should send that to David Crosby.

Hell, I was organizing my vinyl today. Time to throw on "Just Roll Tape"...

Glad that you got it made. I hear your love is a gentle thing. It doesn't matter, it's nothing but dreaming anyhow.

Oh, and he's a pretty good guitar player too.

What a jackass and besides it goes to show just how important a writer CS&N are when they get inducted with BON JOVI!

Apparently, he's been dumped more than a few times. He's currently on his fifth marriage.

The refrain "There's a rose in a fisted glove..." from "Love The One You're With" always makes me giggle immaturely.

He should get in on the back of "4+20" alone.

Greatest 2 minutes in music?

... only to be upstaged by Noel Redding, the finest bassist in the history of rock'n'roll. *chortle*

Anyone hear the guitar sessions he did with Hendrix? He's an amazing guitarist, but his voice has gone straight to hell the last few years. I saw them in concert three years ago, and the crowd was chanting for "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" - but the evidence was all indicating that he just couldn't do it. Unfortunate, that.

Solo Stills seemed to be great every other album for a while in the 70s.

Solo debut was killer.

"Stephen Stills 2" was so-so. Weakish songwriting.

"Manassas" is the great forgotten double-album masterpiece of the 70s.

"Down the Road" had like 2 good songs, 3 honest attempts at good songs and the rest was crap. Rotten mix too.

"Stills" was promising and had more good songs than bad.

Then the streak ended with the two turds known as "Illegal Stills" and "Thoroughfare Gap." I actually have the vinyl of the latter with a sticker attached reading "Contains the hit 'Can't Get No Booty.'" 'Nuff said.

I'm sorry someone farked with you in college to cause you to label everyone you dislike as a frat boy, but trying to talk women into getting into bed with you is a pretty universal experience. Also, I am sorry that you are a virgin.

Stephen Stills played almost every instrument on their first album and wrote a bunch of good songs, some of which are love songs.
