Honestly, I did not find that picture that awesome. And I like sunrises.

APOD, nearly 15 years and still one of the best sites on the net

Yeh, the crane, the scaffolding, the smog and the antenna sort of ruin it.

It looks really Halloweenish. Pretty cool, but not "awesome."

I read the headline as "Pentagon", and was quite confused. The picture sucked in any case.

I for one am glad to see they're finally getting around to fixing the place up. The Parthenon was an intact building until 322 years ago.

Here's one of a standing stone at dawn on midsummer's morning in Kildare, Ireland a few years ago. God knows how many sunrises that's seen.

I read that as "suprise" over the parthenon, sure enough I clicked on the link and saw a pterodactyl (sp).

Probably would still be fine if the Brits hadn't taken chuncks of it away.

CruJones: Honestly, I did not find that picture that awesome. And I like sunrises.

One of the hardest things to do in art is to differentiate between a sunrise and sunset. It's so difficult in paint that classical painters usually cheated and used behavioral figures to emphasize which it was (a maid emptying chamber pots for sunrise, a child being put to be for sunset, etc)...you only knew which it was by what the people in the painting were doing.

Same with this picture...if the caption hadn't have told me that it was a sunrise, I would have thought it was a sunset.

Also, I knew the Parthenon was in pretty poor shape, but that profile makes you see it as a *very* ramshackle pile of very old stones that is one mediocre earthquake away from coming apart entirely.

/hooray for Ottoman racism and gunnery practice?

zoobaby: Probably would still be fine if the Brits hadn't taken chuncks of it away.

That's not why it looks like a mess. In 1687, it was used to store gunpowder by the Turks until it exploded. To add insult to injury, one of the first attempts at repair used steel bars embedded into the columns, which rusted and expanded over time.

Pretty much gonna parrot what everyone else is saying:
big giant sun = +1
modern scaffolding and cranes = -1

Net score = 0

pup.socket 2009-06-21 10:00:59 AM
how can you tell it is the parthenon? i could make the same picture of the sun over my toolshed if it wasn't raining.

Merry Litha to all you pagan Farkers out there.

The Mrs. and our friends are grilling steaks and drinking mead after our circle today.

Go to see the Parthenon in Nashville. It's still intact.

tarvuz 2009-06-21 11:40:03 AM
Cormee, the photo was on the last island before Thera/Santorini.

Yes having a friend with two cave houses is nice.

Yeah. I got my first chance to visit Florence, a life-long dream, recently, and it seemed like the entire farking town was covered in scaffolding and construction. Rationally I understand the huge amount of maintenance and effort required to keep these centuries/millennia-old constructions standing, but it's still pretty damned disappointing.

Yes, but what do they say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is?

HRPuffinStuff 2009-06-21 12:35:13 PM
Found the picture along with the other pics that morning to be better than the average bear's pics. Actually reading a bit of the info reveals that photog was 5.12 km away, which contributes to the hazy/smoggy look.

Two other pics from same shoot:

I can't begin to imagine how you would do that. What difference is there in a still shot/painting?

The wife and I were just at the Acropolis last month and the Parthenon covered in scaffolding and surrounded by cranes was somewhat off-putting.

That's the authentic look. They're 2,500 year-old cranes.

/ I'll miss the old exhibit of the friezes there now the new museum's open. Go and hunt for the speech bubble saying "opiumpoopy woz here" (οπιυμπυπη υοζ χηρ)

I was there 6 years ago and it was under construction then, too. Long project apparently...
