Highlights of 6/20/09:

Protestors were violently blocked today from getting to Azadi and Englehab Squares by massive armed presence. This seems to be a direct result of Khamenei's speech and orders to meet protestors with violence. Protests happened in cities all over the country, and have been met with brutality. There are reports of protestors fighting back, even having burned down at least one Basij headquarter. One mosque was burned in Tehran with protestors inside it, though casualties are not known.

The government report that a suicide bomber struck at the shrine of Imam Khomeini, inflicting heavy damage and deaths, have NOT been verified. Iranian TV has been airing videoed "confessions" of Iranian youth saying that they had been recruited and trained to cause this disturbance by the UK, Israeli, and US governments.

Confirmed:
- at least 19 deaths, including what is becoming an iconic video of a young woman's graphic death
- authorities using water cannons, tear gas, and clubs on protestors (male and female, with some reports that the women are being beaten as hard if not harder than the men)
- helicopters dropping some sort of agent on protestors (likely CS). Khamenei claimed it was water to cool the protestors, Twitter reports that it burned and blinded people (it was NOT white phosphorous - burning sensation was consistent with CS)
- Basij using concrete-weighted PVC pipes as weapons.
- Basij marking doorways of protestor's homes
- At least one unit of the Iranian Police begged protestors for calm and peace
- Ministry of Culture on Saturday banned international media from reporting on the demonstrations unless they receive permission from Iranian authorities
- Iranian government has agreed to recount 10% of the votes, chosen at random
- Electricity was cut to many Tehran neighbourhoods on Saturday evening
- Mousavi issued a long statement today that asked protestors to remain peaceful (and not take revenge on the Basij), and demanded a new election. He also stated his readiness to become a martyr and asked iranians to strike in the event of his arrest.
- Hospitals have been recognized as unsafe, as Basij are laying in wait and taking injured people away

Things We're Gathering More Information/Confirmation On:

-Tanks moving into Tehran. More tweets coming in confirming the tanks. We don't know if its IRG, Army, or Basij using them. PK, CfI and knv have said that they do not know of any armored units moving into the city. PK believes its a hoax sent out by the government. Those that claimed to have seen it are RTs or 5+ hours old
-Basij waiting outside embassies for wounded. Sparse reports of it, not considered confirmed yet
-Whether or not Hizbollah from outside Iran has come to the government's aid. We have reason to believe Iranian Hizbollah (Anser) is being used. No confirmation on Lebanese Hizbollah or Hamas, rumors abound though of arabic speaking police, sparking this.
-What is occuring in other cities around Iran, such as Rasht
-Whether earlier reports of a section of Tehran (Eastern, I believe) was secured by protesters. They could very well have secured it at one point, but it could've been lost, not that light has fallen
-Acid from helicopters still thought to be tear gas/CS gas plus water. Symptoms seem to be consistent with those.
-Khemeini reported to have been taken to a military base for safety
-The status of the military and whether the Army and IRG are going to come out against the government. The IRG is the new police force, but it is rumored that they refuse to fire on civilians. One of the Grand Ayatollahs, who is against the SA, claims to have the backing of the army. more confirmations are needed
-Whether the report from the Assembly of Experts was a hoax or not regarding their support of the Supreme Ayatollah. If so, what is the statement from them
-Mullahs marching with protesters in Mashdad
- Several Embassies are accepting injured iranians, and have asked for doctors to come forward

someone please host this info concisely somewhere: ""Tear gas" comes in many different forms, but a solution of 5% baking soda/sodium bicarbonate (جوش شیرین ) to 95% water is cheap and effective, neutralizing many of them. If at all possible, the solution should be cold -- warm water will open pores in the skin, causing the chemicals to be absorbed more quickly. Keep a spray bottle with you if you can. In a pinch, breathing a chopped or crushed onion in a paper bag can cause the eyes to water and flush some of the CS out. CS is fat soluble, so do not treat tear gas or CS attacks with Vaseline, oils or any oily creams/lotions, since this will only spread the irritant and allow it to stick to the skin. Cold water, air and time are the only effective antidotes. Get the victim to a cold shower or a garden hose as quickly as you can. Asthmatics should warn their colleagues about their condition ahead of time, so that they are prepared to remove you from the area if necessary."

Please everyone read this before posting in the thread. So we can organize the first page of the thread. Also the guidelines to keep large chunks of information together in the first page so people who are new, can understand better what is going on. Thanks!

Guidelines:

1. Try not to post until Tatsuma's posts are up. If there is posts, please wait until all are posted so they can stay together in order, either by him or by others posting for him. Then after Tatsuma's posts are up next should be posted is birdtongue's links, please if someone does it for birdtongue that they have the links working, and Tickle Mittens' Torrent List Post, and finally The FARK Revolutionary Armed Forces. Or anything that can be a positive to the thread that is somewhat up to date that is a large post. Then everyone can post.

2. If posting Tweets, bold them, and write who's tweet it is or initials of the tweeter would be preferred.

3. If people have answers for tweets that will help people in Iran or in this thread, please bold it as well.

4. Ignore trolls please, don't respond to them. Thanks.

5. If anyone post links please try to make them in a new window, not all the time it works though so just try.

6. If anyone needs to post stuff about Proxy's and what not please bold as well.

7. Anything urgent please bold.

If anyone feels like there should be more guidelines tell me. Thanks.

Stuff to help with this thread/catch up on what is going on with Iran:

We are working together. He would of posted this for me if I wasn't online and if he was. We basically are trying to get all the large chunks of information like Tatsuma's, etc... together on one page for everyone to read. Also if people have such huge information that it takes more post to post, we want those posts to stay together.

There are an unfathomable number of chemical agents that are irritants. Without knowing a lot more information, it's impossible to tell.

However, since the military hasn't gotten involved yet, it's safe to venture it's either improvised or commercially available (ie available to police/law enforcement).

That is true, unless they are getting it from someone that they don't want us to know where they got it from. Hard to tell with these folks. Probably in the next few days or so, we will find out what it is, or have a good idea.

One more thing before bed. Please don't do this. It's tempting, I know, but it saps the Iranian bandwidth, which is used for things like Twitter and Facebook. There's only so much space on lines going in and out of the country.

My ISP called, too. I told them what I was up to, that I wasn't violating the TOS, and offered to pay for more bandwidth... their response was, "Don't worry about it. You're not the only one." I love locally owned ISPs.

That's pure speculation at this point, and even then rational thought suggests that it's highly unlikely. After all, if Iran was getting unconventional munitions supplied to it secretly, it'd be wanting other things/personnel which might help secure the situation quicker.

So far, their response has been blunt, violent, and without any subtlety, finesse, or finality.

We'll see if the military weighs in, which will change things, but shy of that, it's amazing just how... hollow... the Iranian power establishment really is without the military.

Fark the Iranian propaganda websites. When SA and 4chan were on them hard they were down for hours straight.

KaelGotRice: Anyone else amused that this Link esquire writer openly admits to illegally DDoSing Iranian government websites?

Not that I'm not either ;)

The offending party would have to file charges in a case like that. Iranian government's a bit too busy right now. The new regime won't care once they're in and NO prosecutor's going to do anything on the word of the failed state if they manage somehow to hold onto power.

I SMOKE MARIJUANA!
I KILLED A MAN IN RENO JUST TO WATCH HIM DIE!

Easy defense there. "I was just making a joke online" or "I was trying to look cool" or something like that. Just claim you were talking and not doing. Can you prove I actually did it? No? Case dismissed.

The_Flatline: demonfaerie: That is true, unless they are getting it from someone that they don't want us to know where they got it from. Hard to tell with these folks. Probably in the next few days or so, we will find out what it is, or have a good idea.

True, if they had the military on their side, it would of been over days ago. Which is good.

demonfaerie: The_Flatline: demonfaerie: The other thread that is still going on said it is either tear gas or pepper spray, not acid because the metal would change color or erode or something like that. I can't think of anything else it could be.

Well, there was a tweet that something was used that got worse when you tried to wash it off with water.

My first guess was lye.

I didn't hear that, it might be. It is kind of hard to tell through video and tweets. We need a chemist.

Tear gas can mimic lye, however they are both treatable with vinegar so it doesn't matter much.

Any idea what they are spraying them with. They say it isn't tear gas, but who knows.

Squirm: bberg: At first I was worried that I might be violating my DSL's terms of service.

You could be? I'm not, but I'm glad I read it again. I've seen one other person who got a call from their service provider about their spiked bandwidth, and in both cases the TOS was on our side.

I'm sure I am. "You also may not...use the Service to host any type of server."

Fark 'em. That was my point. People are dying and need to be able to communicate with the world, and I'm sitting here worrying about losing my DSL connection and having to switch to cable? Fark that.

Besides, I've had my inbound and outbound connection maxed out for weeks at a time for torrents and newsgroups. If they see a spike they'll probably just think I'm downloading more porn^H^H^H^H^H Linux ISOs

IT could be liquid tear gas. There is a aerosol form and then liquid. The liquid form can cause blisters and burning if not treated right away. Anyone who's ever been in the military can tell you that if you have tear gas on you the absolute last thing you want to do is try to wash it off. Vinegar or if it's only the aerosol form then just sit around for 30 mins and deal with the pain.

I wasn't aware of that. It's good to know. Thanks for coming in and giving me that intel.

I know there's dozens of different "tear gasses", so maybe this one is a more caustic variant.

If you do not own vinegar then tomato juice, orange juice, lemon juice even farking onions can help soothe the pain.

Squirm: You're doing fabulously, then. Keep it up, and thank you! :)

I'm most pissed that I've got literally gigs upon gigs upon GIGS of tactical manuals and books and stuff like that on my computer (including a shiatload of medical and chemical textbooks) and I have NO idea how to get them into the hands of the people there if they even have the resources to read a bunch of PDF files at this point...

PS, I've officially abandoned the public thread. Discussion has completely fallen apart and it is just trolling and flaming.
