Let's all pretend we're priests in some phoney baloney new age religion. Then we can demand the right to stomp all over an ancient monument and chip bits off it when no one is looking. farking idiot druids and hippies.

"Some peace-loving druids have told the Guardian..."

I'm concerned that I should be looking out for warmongering Druids in everyday life.

Horses, Drones and Dogs, should be sized accordingly.

Wanted to go to Stonehenge myself today, but my English friend warned me off of going to it or any other neolithic site this weekend, as the hippies and neo-druids have love-ins at all the English monuments, apparently. I would like to see Stonehenge on a cool day like today, but I don't want to have to deal with drug-using hippies who believe in witchcraft or some other crazy thing.

Wow, glad to see it's Narc Night here in the Stonehenge thread. You guys must be getting up early for church; it's still Saturday night to me.

To be fair, they probably wouldn't actually bother you.

But yeah, probably more impressive when not overcrowded, like most monuments.

I am so grateful that my Dad took my brothers and I to Stonehenge when we were young. We thought the summer solstice celebration was the coolest thing ever, and we were all awed by the stones themselves. Very few police, lots of ale and I suppose there was tons of pot. No trouble from the revelers, everyone was very friendly, lots of odd ball people but they didn't bother anyone. A few years later, my brothers and I, along with some friends went back in late summer, and by that time we had all discovered the joys of beer and it was legal for us to drink, at least in the UK. After dark we walked from where we were staying out to the fields and sat around in the moon light drinking and having a picnic, freezing our asses off. Good times, very good indeed, especially for my younger brother - he met his wife that night. No, she wasn't a druid priestess, just a very sweet local girl.

Haven't been back to Stonehenge since, and I hear you can't get near the stones, people treat the site like a garbage dump and the solstice attracts such huge crowds it isn't worth going. No wonder the powers that be are getting all uptight. Don't know if I'd like to attend the summer solstice again, sounds very scary, what with all the cops, dogs and naked hippies and such.

Yes, it's far better to work through a checklist of bland historical monuments rather than to experience and engage with types of people that you've never seen before. I may not be a fan of druid hippies either, but what the hell is your worry? You might not end up with that perfect digital photo of stonehenge that you'll never look at again? You might have to interact with human beings? Man, Americans are so asocialized.

I was at school in Salisbury when the solstice was a huge illegal hippy festival that lasted for days. All the 'bad girls' used to skip school and take the bus up there to buy pot... now I kind of wish I'd gone with them.

Oh noes! You might be offended by the smell of pot and different cultural practices!

How delicate are you?

actually if you do a little research you find that stonehenge today is not in the original shape it was found - back in the day a bunch of folks decided to put a lot of the stones in the order and fashion they thought they should be and the stonehenge today is basically only good for what it has always been good for -
celebrating life and love in a fashion that is pleasing to all who wish to celebrate it there.

spanking fat women - for instance.

Meh, Avebury > Stonehenge any day. It's so big there's a village in the middle of it. A village with a pub. Sitting on a hot summer's day getting gently pissed in a pub in a neolithic monument is one of life's little pleasures.

There were a few, they have four motors and can hover/swoop etc. On the way out this morning amongst all the 'serious' police ie not the general plod I saw the operator with his large remote control, but not the monitor(s).
A lot of low plane action too but it is Salisbury Plain, I stopped for a leak between Devizes and Amesbury at about 1.30am, nowhere to pull over and all MOD posted land, as soon as I start peeing a Land Rover came out of the hedge full of soldiers, because I had been in the US so long my first reaction was to show them my empty hands indicating no weapon, but while peeing, didn't get wet feet though.
