Didn't the U.S. propose a bill recently that also bans flavoring in cigarettes, and calling them light along with some other restrictions that Obama pledged to sign if it gets to his desk?

sirgrim: Didn't the U.S. propose a bill recently that also bans flavoring in cigarettes, and calling them light along with some other restrictions that Obama pledged to sign if it gets to his desk?

Not that flavoring.

FTFA: Rep. Lincoln Davis (D-Tenn.), in a letter to Canada's minister of industry, said there's no evidence that American blend cigarettes are more appealing to underage smokers. "Because there is no health justification for such a broad ban on flavorings," he said the bill would violate Canada's commitments to the World Trade Organization and under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

By this logic, there is a health justification in an outright ban on cigarettes, so let's do that.

Also, why ban all flavors except menthol? why not just ban them all?

Do we really want to start a free-trade fight on the behalf of tobacco companies?

Seriously, they're parasites. The number of people they employ is insignificant compared to the damage they do to the economy via death, disease, and increased medical costs. Fark 'em.

I think the Republicans are desperate for an issue to push, especially with the economy no longer in free fall. They'll take just about anything they can get.

As a Canadian, I really have no problem with this legislation, other than the fact that I don't think it will actually work. The governments going to have to ban teen smoking (and actually enforce it).

It wasn't the GOP who originally picked the free trade fight with Canada and other countries....they were pissed long before this stupid cigarette issue.

The controversial legislation is being considered amid a debate over "Buy American" language in the $787 stimulus bill that required U.S. content in projects as long as that did not violate trade deals.

That bill was written by Obama and his Democrat Politburo......

and btw.....read by NO ONE in Congress before it was voted on because DEMOCRAT leaders gave them only 2 days to go over the nearly 1000 pages.

So just to be clear on this, you're opposed to the idea of buying American products/materials/labor for stimulus projects when possible? You think that, had they been given more time, Republicans would've come out against buying American for projects meant to stimulate the US economy?

Guys, remove your head from your ass, then RTFA. Canada is trying to ban all US made cigarettes because of chemicals they consider "flavoring", which do not change the taste of the cigarettes or change the health risks. This is NOT the same as what was recently passed in the US.

So you also oppose the buying American made materials and products for stimulus projects meant to boost the American economy?

The_Tom 2009-06-21 03:44:46 AM
FTFA: "But the ban on flavorings would also include mild flavorings used in the processing of American-blend cigarettes made from burley tobacco. The flavorings are intended to make the products taste less harsh and are not detectable to smokers, according to Roger Quarles, president of the Kentucky's Burley Tobacco Cooperative."

Um, sorry Roger, that does not compute. If they were absent, the tobacco would taste more harsh. I'm kinda thinking that would "be detected by the smoker."

A flavouring is something that changes a taste. Just because it changes "taste like ass" to "tastes more like regular tobacco" doesn't make it a flavouring.

FTFA: "[A GOPtard] noted the U.S. legislation putting new regulations on tobacco, approved by the Senate just a week ago, outlawed flavors like chocolate in cigarettes but not "non-characterizing" flavors."

There's your problem, Lou. The U.S. legislation came up with this bizarre concept called a "non-characterizing flavor" (effectively a flavour that isn't a flavour?) and made an exception for them. Dare I suggest it was inserted at the urging of lobbyists representing folks like Roger Quarles, of the Burley Tobacco Cooperative?

HairBolus 2009-06-21 03:45:08 AM
American cigarettes are full of all sorts of crap that they don't disclose on the package.

I am amused at periodic attempts at laws to force cigarettes to be self extinguishing so that drunks who smoke in bed don't set their mattress on fire.

What stories about these laws hardly mention is that a 'natural cigerette' made from just paper and tobacco, like the old style French Gauloises and Gitanes black brands, doesn't contain the chemicals needed to keep it burning without puffing. (I don't know what the current behavior of Gauloises and Gitanes is since the last one I smoked was in the early 90s).

FlyingPig [TotalFark] 2009-06-21 03:56:29 AM
Yeah, the reason kids smoke is because they taste like farking chocolate.

PirateFreedom 2009-06-21 04:01:40 AM
I doubt making unadulterated tobacco is beyond Americas capability.
So make some clean cigarettes a$$holes.
You might even find you increase your market share in the US by offering this alternative.

jake3988: GOP picks free-trade fight with Canada because Canada wants to ban flavorings in cigarettes
=============================================

Um, GOP, we just passed a bill that bans flavorings in cigarettes.

Um...yeah. Clearly your Nuance Translator's on the fritz, so lemme explain what's going on...

Canada is upset over the "Buy American" language in the "stimulus bill"; and, quite frankly, I don't blame'em, because apparently the entire Congress never made it past Economics 101, or hasn't picked up a history book since 1929.

Canada believes the "Buy American" provision is an act of protectionism; because, well, it is an act of protectionism. Simply put, they believe we're violating NAFTA. Or, if not specific terms, certainly the spirit of the agreement, so Canada is reacting in kind.

And again, I don't blame'em.

In addition, the reason I say Congressional members haven't picked up a history book since 1929 is because Hoover took a similar protectionist position and it ended with disastrous results. In fact, it's been argued (quite effectively, I might add) that a protectionist posture exacerbated the Great Depression.

It is a height of arrogance to tell another country what they can and cannot sell in their stores.

Things of this ilk are why America has no respect worldwide these days. I blame every American voter.

proteus_b 2009-06-21 05:17:44 AM
sorry starsrift it's not, when you have trade agreements. if we banned the sale of XXXXXX which was a major export from canada, yer darn tootin' they would bring it up through the appropriate channels.

whereisian 2009-06-21 05:35:09 AM
This is not protectionism. Read the bill. They ban fruit and amino acids, among other things.

They are targeting the single winetip cigars they sell at convenience stores which are popular with the kids.

It's really moot anyways. American cigarettes in Canada are ridiculously expensive. I don't know a single person who smokes them with any kind of regularity.

Canada is protesting the Buy American thing by opening free trade talks with Columbia. Not that the US cares - or noticed.

Unsung_Hero 2009-06-21 06:17:45 AM
I thought the trade agreement club could only be used if Canada made different rules for domestic products to favour them over imports...

So as long as our legislation bans flavoured domestic smokes, the US should take a flying leap on this issue.

Obviously, this is false. Else, we could start adding valuable H20 to our oil when we export it to America, for increased value. And I would be able to go my local Wal-Mart and pick up some lovely American-tooled firearms.

Look, it's easy. The companies need to take the additional stuff out of the export cigarettes and rebrand them as Canadian Camels. So. . . they taste like shiat. Big deal, they're cigarettes, and they already taste like shiat. Those brands don't sell anyway. Back when I worked in a convenience store, I'd sell maybe a pack a month.

I used to work at a cigarette plant, and have a pretty good idea what is in them. Most of the additives are food based products, including chocolate and honey.

There are 2 brands out there that for 50,000 cases (not cartons - cases) the only difference between them is 6 drops of a concentrate. I don't smoke but the people that did could actually taste the difference.

But then the plant I worked at is closed, and the 3,000+ union jobs that started at $60k/year (and went way up from there with OT) are gone.
