Considering they are tax-exempt I have no sympathy for them. Let them pay their share.

If they use city services, there is obviously a cost associated with that.

To graduate from high school they told us we had to volunteer 20 hours of community service. I tried explaining what was wrong with that statement, but no one would listen.

From the article:

A proposed recovery plan under Act 47 for distressed municipalities, meant to address a huge pension fund shortfall, calls upon the city to beg $6 million a year from tax-exempt institutions.

Public pensions strike again. I don't see anything in the article about fixing the pension system so that this doesn't happen again, though.

They "volunteer" you.

Time to tax churches.

Good. Our hospitals have been freeloading off the government for too long. Someone needs to teach the Universities that there is no free ride, either.

The area's largest mostly-tax-exempt institution, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, responded that its contributions to the city's dynamism are already huge.

One-third of UPMC's revenues come from its for-profit components, which pay "more than $24 million in parking, property and business taxes" to various local governments, said Frank Raczkiewicz, UPMC's director of media relations. The hospital system has also pledged $100 million to the Pittsburgh Promise of tuition aid to public school graduates, which has "a huge
multiplier effect when it comes to housing values and the desirability of Pittsburgh as a place to live."

This. Lawrencville was a crumbling row house business district, now it is revitalizing with remodeled houses and businesses due to Children's Hospital moving to the neighborhood.

Don't ruin a good thing Luke.

One thing I do not like is UPMC letters big and bold on top of the Steel Bldg...that is so wrong. Everywhere you turn...you see UPMC, it's like they are taking over the city. But, Raczkiewicz has a valid point...

They're an entertainment venue, and quite a few of them operate at a profit.

Very few of them make a profit.

The hospital should resond by charging the city $100 per ambulance arrival to make up the expense. Its only fair that the city should pay for emergency services right?

Charging a hospital that provides an invalauble service to your city for the priviledge of doing so is assinine

I seem to remember this from the military:

"I need two volunteers. You two, come with me."

MrBentor 2009-06-20 07:27:17 PM
Dear Mayor.

Due to pressure from the local government, your office, onerous new regulations, taxes and fees; and the apparent fact that you do not want thriving organizations supporting the community in your region. We have decided to move or operations and more than 4,000 employees elsewhere.

Uh, like you said, that's not "volunteer" work. If it a "requirement" then it is mandatory.

Then again - doesn't the IRS use phrases like "voluntary compliance" but will come down on you like a sack of bricks from farkland if you don't?

Non-Profits don't pay enough in taxes, pay up! Wow, the high from all that extra tax money sure makes Democrats delusional.

The relationship between the University and the Patrician, absolute ruler and nearly benevolent dictator of Ankh-Morpork, was a complex and subtle one.
The wizards held that, as servants of a higher truth, they were not subject to the mundane laws of the city.
The Patrician said that, indeed, this was the case, but they would bloody well pay their taxes like everyone else.
The wizards said that, as followers of the light of wisdom, they owed allegiance to no mortal man.
The Patrician said that this may well be true but they also owed a city tax of two hundred dollars per head per annum, payable quarterly.
The wizards said that the University stood on magical ground and was therefore exempt from taxation and anyway you couldn't put a tax on knowledge.
The Patrician said you could. It was two hundred dollars per capita; if per capita was a problem, decapita could be arranged.
The wizards said that the University had never paid taxes to the civil authority.
The Patrician said that he was not proposing to remain civil for long.
The wizards said, what about easy terms?
The Patrician said he was talking about easy terms. They wouldn't want to know about the hard terms.
The wizards said that there was a ruler back in , oh, it would be the Century of the Dragonfly, who had tried to tell the University what to do. The Patrician could come and have a look at him if he liked.
The Patrician said that he would. He truly would
In the end it was agreed that while the wizards of course paid no taxes, they would nevertheless make an entirely voluntary donation of, oh, let's say two hundred dollars per head, without prejudice, mutatis mutandis, no strings attached, to be used strictly for non-militaristic and environmentally-acceptable purposes.
