Awesome. Most people think that "music" is difficult. Especially popular music. My students are all between 9 and 14 years old... they can churn out good tunes with just two hours of practice and a little guidance.

"An album a day" was pretty-much expected in Austria and Germany in the 200 years between Bach and Wagner.

Know your chords and practice your scales. The rest is gravy.

I'll point out that the headline should be "an album in a day", not "an album a day".

Parallel structures do not require prepositional linking conjectives ex post facto. Or something.

Beck is awesome. :D

As long as Beck is allowed to get out a good cry (or two) before he does anything performance-wise it's all good.

to put out a half decent LP

mrEdude: gimmick does not = greatness

Yup, either its gonna be pretty cool or it will be a glorious trainwreck. Either way I'm there.

/I'm going with trainwreck. Bands like Phish and Dream Theatre that do entire albums in concert practice that shiat for months.

No, it's an important distinction. They will record their version in a day, but they won't do one every day.

Beck ! Dj MOM GEANS! AND LORD ZENU! HELLLLSSSSS NO!

ArturoBandini 2009-06-19 11:43:30 PM
Please note: Beck & friends will re-record other artist's albums.

They will not be writing new material.

So whatever songs 9-yr-old students, Phish members, or "great bands" write in whatever length of time -- has no bearing on this discussion.

Beck n' pals aren't writing new material. They are covering old material.

So I'm not really too impressed by this. I'm sure they'll have fun, and I'm sure some of the songs will capture that fun, but I really don't have any interest in hearing masturbatory versions of classics like VU & Nico. The original will do.

ArturoBandini: Phish members, or "great bands" write in whatever length of time

No, after your post, I realized you read mine wrong. Both Phish and Dream Theatre cover entire albums in concert as a special event type thing. Phish have done the Beatles, The Talking Heads, and others. Dream Theatre has done Master of Puppets, Number of The Beast and as shiatload of others. Both bands have done Dark Side of the Moon in it's entirety live.

And they practice the shiat out of them. True, live is harder, you cant fark up and you do it all at once.
It will be easier to do a song a day, get it right and knowing Beck, using every editing trick on his PowerMac to get it right.

Which is why there is a possibility some of this stuff might be pretty cool.

SubBass49 2009-06-19 11:58:06 PM
I'm kind of enjoying the VU cover that's up on the site right now. Will be doing digital captures of these tracks as MP3s (for my own enjoyment of course.)

Well, except that Beck's doing an entire an entire album in a day, not just a song. And, according to the article, "nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time."

Which is why it sounds more masturbatory than celebratory.

ArturoBandini 2009-06-20 12:04:19 AM
Oh, and I'm assuming that they're recording/mixing everything in one day, and just spreading out the release of each track over several weeks, based on how this article is written.

I guess they might record in one day, then mix/tweak/etc each individual song weekly, but that seems like cheating...

Argh! Um, I mean, I didn't think the underline emphasized my point enough, so I was repeating for effect, like "an entire, an entire album." Yeah.

As for MGMT - I haven't decided where I stand on their music yet (currently bordering on "wouldn't buy, but could possibly tolerate") but I have to admit I kinda like their video for "Kids" - Link (new window) - well, not the part where they wrongly attribute the Nietzsche quote, and not so much the band's fancy dress, but the part where they freak out the little boy. That's kind of cool.

I prefer the awesome mash up of kids and lady stardust:
A plus D - Stardust Kids (new window)

It's such a perfect combination; it works great because it doesn't feel as forced or gimmicky as 99% of other mash ups.

The thing I don't like about this is that some kids my age (high school) may look at this and stupidly assume that these are original Beck recordings (I love Beck, by the way). I also don't like this because kids my age (I have a vendetta against my generation, apparently) will be exposed to COVER versions of the recordings firstly, which, regardless of being good or bad, are still different than the original(s) and will bastardize the listeners' view of the song(s).

strangeguitar: I was hoping that it was this Beck:

I saw that Beck once - he opened for BB King. He was good, and he's better than Glen Beck (by several hundred light years), but this Beck guy is a few million light years behind Glen Beck - and now he's not only whoring himself out, but he's doing so by wrapping himself in the work of other artists. Not only am I unimpressed, but I'm about to throw up.

Come to think of it, why is it that some shiatty biker bar in Tennessee(?) can owe $15K for letting some cover band touch a Bob Seger tune, but this asshat Beck can make money off of Lou Reed? Shouldn't this Beck twit be paying for the privilege of playing Jeff Beck tunes?

Music Nerd 2009-06-20 07:45:12 AM
Change the album to the 1984 release VU, add some rehearsal time, and use the Mutations band, and it would be the coolest thing ever.

But it will still be interesting to see what happens.

I'm not so sure about that 100%.
Any first year guitar student can be taught the riff to "Smoke on the Water" or pretty much any AC/DC song.

Tell a 30+ year guitar veteran he has a day to come up with an idea for a song that has a riff in it that is as good and full of timeless memorable hooks like "Smoke on the Water" or a classic AC/DC song.......

.....good luck.

there sure is a lot of biatching about Beck doing a cover of a full album (which is not new) as if he is the first one to ever do covers. Not to mention, it's not like he's some asshole who's using a cover to launch his career. (See: any late-90s band)

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Sunday Morning seems like a track you really can't do anything other than a straight cover of.

if you thought this was going to be original, check out Record of the Week Club (new window), a Winnipeg-based revolving collective who met on a bunch of weeknights not really knowing what they were going to write and record and put together an album of it. John K Samson of The Weakerthans is a core member!

How intriguing you cited AC/DC. They got a couple good ideas and have used them pretty much from there on out. Sort of kidding. Anyway, modern tools are pretty spiffy. The relationship between basic / home / amateur quality and quality of idea is still there, but easier access.

I'm surprised by people's belief that everybody cares what they do every day
