I wish it were so, my farking Logic/Mainstage rig locked up twice onstage last night. Maybe its the toyish m-audio mixer that I'm using as an audio interface. At least the bass guitar works...

Best Krautrock band?

/next to NEU! and Can, of course.
//though I don't think I could listen to a 168-hour album.

Just in time for electonic music to stop being released on vinyl and the producers reduced to simple loop-makers as the DJs continue to shove them away for more stardom.

/Ableton Live! killed an art form

No.

the only Kraftwerk albums i really like are "radio-activity" and "trans europe express".
i've never heard their early 70's stuff [ie. first 3 albums]. what's that era like?

Best Krautrock band?

The greatest "kraut" band is in my opinion and without hesitation COSMIC JOKERS
Too long a story so I recommend a google or wiki search for the details. Basically the greatest band that didn't actually exist.
I have the first two records and they are above and beyond astonishing.

also:

Check out the first three records by Ashra Tempel.
Cosmic guitar jam stuff.

The first Klaus Sculze album "Irrlicht" is really good. Dark and disturbing. It sounds like the soundtrack to an alien "snuff" film.

I really dig the Froese,Franke, and Baumann era of Tangerine Dream.
"Phaedra" "Rubycon" and "Ricochet" are my favorites.

Amon Duul II
Guru Guru
Faust
Popol Vuh
NEU!
Can
Kraftwerk

Kraut is the best music for you if you tire of the pretentiousness of "prog" and wish Pink Floyd never got hijacked by Waters. (the cosmic soundtrack era of Floyd before Waters became dictator)

Funny that you would blame Ableton Live. It was developed in part by one of the most innovative electronic acts out there. That would be Monolake, of course. The genre is hardly dead, either. I realize that there's tons of crap like Deadmau5 and Daft Punk, but there's a massive amount of awesome new music out there being released every day.

DJ Shadow fell off and Flying Lotus isn't that great to be honest. He's had some really nice moments though. You can't really file Shadow in the "electronic" music crate though.

Anyway, tons of people do know who Flying Lotus is, he's on Warp Records! You might be hanging out in the wrong places!

Kraftwerk kicks so much ass. I've been loving them for over 25 years, since I picked up a copy of Computer World on vinyl at a pawn shop when I was about 13...

Bee Roo Ga Ho Shee: Have you heard the Radio1 Essential Mix by Flying Lotus? Two hours of straight-up, unadulterated bliss. That mix served as a gateway to a whole bunch of dubstep for me, as well. Good stuff.

And yes, I absolutely hang out in the wrong places ;)

I haven't heard it, but I checked out the track listing and a lot of the usual names come up (Hyperdub, Kode9, etc.)

I tend to like deep, atmospheric dubstep. Best example I could find on short notice is Millie. Check the "Path To Hell" tune specifically. Might be a bit boring for some people though!

Flying Lotus makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. His essential mix was glorious, great listen. Got hooked the first time I heard him, a remix of "My Room is White" by Mia Doi Todd. Glorious.

I wondered aloud if they would like to see it get to the point of electrodes in the brain so that whatever they though would come through a loudspeaker. "Yes." enthused Ralf, "this would be fantastic."

The final solution to the music problem, I suggested.

1st recorded case of Godwin?

I make electronic music for fun, but most of it is shiat. My dad is a professional electronic musician, so it kind of counts.

I have followed some profile links in some other threads to some truly awful industrial/electronic claptrap.

Agreed. In fact, Ableton can enable some really inventive, expressive live performances...if its capabilities are understood and exploited by the performer. Use it as nothing more than a laptop-resident ADAT and loop box live, and yeah...stale as shiat. Use it as the versatile instrument it is and you're no less a "live musician" as someone with regular "analog" instruments.

Just getting up on the learning curve, myself. I craft stuff in different DAW environments, but since we're taking the current project live now, I've gone to Ableton Live as by far the best performance solution. Fortunately, I have some very expert local advice available to me (monica.mhz, for one).

Well. there's your problem, Logic works great until you try to actually use it.
this is true in non musical settings as well, like say an arguement with your wife

Elaborate, please? I would like to hear terrible war stories about Logic. I'm 95% satisfied with it.

I mean "released music on a CD or other medium besides CD-R or cassette tape and/or actually performed live non-recorded (sequences are fine, as Ralf would emphatically agree) electronic instruments on stage"

I'm not talking about an indie-rock band with a Moog or a DJ with a MacBook full of pre-recorded tracks that are mixed together.

So something like "has no beginning or end, was made on Fruity Loops mostly by hitting 'randomize' button and was heard by less than 4 people in whole world" won't cut it?

Yes. Wierd evil ambient and doing a movie soundtrack (big one, not indie). No looping software in use. got Ableton installed with the sound card, have yet to use it. Live analog ESQ-1s and a theremin and pump organ and some other toys. Let us talk disturbeing :)

though for the midi basic work, I use Anvil Studio. VERY mad props there.

.....btw,

the best Cosmic Jokers is the first two.

"Cosmic Jokers"(self titled) and "Galactic Supermarket"

both are currently listed on EBAY.

The others are OK but are kinda poorly edited/mixed.

as far as kraftwerk, I've got: (not sure which are albums, singles, ep, whoteva)

das model
autobahn
compterwelt
electriccafe
mensch maschine (man machine)
radio-aktivitat
trans europa express

and of course minimum maximum. I'd REALLY like to get a hold of the dvd, or a digital download version of it at least. looks like a cool concert and I'd like to have some kind of non-youtube version of it.

yup :)
lately i use mostly spectralis, elektron machinedrum and rs-7000 for "live" performances. i have never totally trusted a laptop but lately i'm kind of thinking about switching to that for portability. the apc40/ableton combo looks kinda fresh

i came to this thread because my cousin playing 'computer world' for me when i was little was probably the biggest reason i got into it, but also lots of tangerine dream when i was a kid, "warsaw concert" era is my favorite tho
