ehh completely stopped listening to them, Tarja did a great job combining opera with power. Annette is just.. ehhh... especially combined with Nightwish, the band itself just was not impressive.
Angela Gossow now... that's a singer that meshes with a BADASS band, Arch Enemy at least has talent.
Nightwish only had a good singer, now not even that.

Dude, that's the cheesiest, most ridiculous production I've seen in a while. Who does this appeal to? 14 year olds?

That.

Was.

Terrible.

Good vocals or not, don't be a cheeseball.

I kept waiting for GWAR or Spinal Tap to come out and make some sense out of that production.

Too bad everyone's ego in Nightwish got in the way of being a band. But hey, they peaked with Oceanborn and Wishmaster and started going downhill with Century Child, so it's for the best.

I saw both Nightwish (Sauget IL/Pop's) and Tarja (Chicago IL/HOB) last month and I happen to like both singers. Obviously, Tarja being a soprano and Annette being a contralto, they both bring something different to the mix.

Wish I would have had the chance to see Tarja with Nightwish, but the End of an Era DVD is as close as I'll get to that. IMO it's a damn good performence.

Agreed. I think they did put their egos before their music. Then they both used their music to "make a point". Nightwish's "Bye Bye Beautiful" and Tarja's response "I Walk Alone" are interesting to say the least.

Tarja's teary-eyed press conference here was only one side of the story.

Too bad, but it happens to a lot of bands.

This. Dear lord, who does this appeal to? The "Twilight" crowd? It's basically just horribly self-serious musical theater.

I've seen them with both singers. Anette has much, much better stage presence. She's a lot of fun to watch, and her voice is very good. All that said, Tarja is 10 times the singer.

Mary Fahl laughs at your childish notion of what a good vocalist is. Although October Project might be considered too tame for the fans of the crap I just watched in this video.

Do yourself a favor and find her album "From The Dark Side Of The Moon" out there on the interweb. It's a 're-imagining' of Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon which on the surface sounds really lame but turned out very well. It was finished in 2006 but remains officially unreleased to due to record label restructuring. A quick Google will point you to a 'preview copy'.

Tarja--sounds good on record, is AWFUL live. Watch "End of an Era" (which this is from) and do shots every time she goes off-key. You'll be loaded fifteen minutes into it. Plus she looks like an idiot when she tries to be metal and throw horns and stuff.

Anette--also good on record, much better live than Tarja even if her range is less for the reasons noted above, although the older stuff I've heard her do is fine.

But the best singer in Nightwish? Marco Hietala. Check out his other band, Tarot--very different from Nightwish but awesome. He's also in a band that does Black Sabbath songs in Finnish. Rock.

I've heard several tracks from The "Other Side of Time" and especially like "Ben Aindi Habibi". She's a very talented singer. But then again, that's just my "childish notion" of what's good.

And for the record, I said I liked Tarja as far as sopranos go. Ms. Fahl is a contralto.

/It's my opinion and I'm welcome to it

The only Nightwish show I've been to was fun as hell. Once is a helluvalot of fun too once you embrace how cheesy it is. "Planet Hell" for the win!

Came here to say that and was beaten....

Marco on their "live" cd does a version of a song off their last studio album and does just as well as Annette. Marco is plain and simply the man. Tarot kicks my ass. I have their "newest" disc on constant play in my mp3 player. Damn shame that Spell of Iron is impossible to get...... I

I find Simone Simons to be a better soprano... And she's hotter too (a redhead, even).

Ordell [TotalFark] 2009-06-18 07:13:11 PM
Tuomas made it pretty clear why Tarja was bounced. His firing letter was a litany of bad, unprofessional and downright biatchy behavior. You can pull that kind of diva shiat if you're Mariah Carey but not when you are 1/5th of a band.

The only problem I have with "Dark Passion Play" is the hideous compression and loudness. What a farking blaring mess that is.

Both of these. I don't know what that was, but it certainly wasn't "rock", as advertised by the headline.

Bad video, but good audio quality, so bear with it.

Have seen her live, and I swear she can send one note around any building about five times before she opens her mouth again.

I have to agree.. I seen Nightwish with Anette in toronto last september and she owned the place ( Sonata opened :D )

I was at Tarja's show in may and she was an angel on stage.

Anette and Tarja are diffrent types of singers..It's like Conparing Danny Filth to Bruce Dickinson... Good luck

//Big time Nightwish fan. and Tarja fan.....Just make that Metal from Finland Fan :)

Fonaibung: "I find Simone Simons to be a better soprano... And she's hotter too (a redhead, even)."

Simons is better looking by far... But have you heard her sing? Christ, she's just bland and very boring.

As for Tarja, can only handle her in tiny doses. She's awful if you listen to her for too long. And her solo stuff is trite.

Although I enjoy Nightwish's current singer and some other chick led bands like Within Temptation and Delain, Nightwish would be a million times more interesting if Marco was the lead vocalist. Well that and if Tuomas' vocal chords were extracted so he would never be able to sing again.

mistervague 2009-06-19 12:26:47 AM
Holy lord that was horrible.
And I actually liked Queensryche's first album.

Illidan 2009-06-19 01:40:30 AM
Loved several Nightwish albums (esp Tarja's voice. :D :D :D)

Dark Passion Play, though.. it seems like the motions are there but I feel absolutely nothing. I'm still not quite sure why I dislike it so rabidly. Epica.. good all-around metal but there's nothing special about it. Agree on Tarot being awesome.

Like the new one much better.

Unmatched Brutality 2009-06-19 08:57:18 AM
As mentioned, Nightwish peaked at Wishmaster/Oceanborn. Thier popularity in the Norwegian/Finnish pop charts marked thier official departure from metal.

Shame, they stole the operatic/power approach from bands like Theatre of Tragedy in the early 90's, sqeezed the metal out of it and still got huge egos and imploded.

Scarrio 2009-06-19 10:18:53 AM
Saw both Tarja and Annette with NW in the past. I generally prefer the older stuff (Oceanborn, Wishmaster) but Tarja is really not that good live. She goes off key regularly, and the only way she could really look any more ridiculous is if she just stood in one place. She has no stage presence. But, put anything she's recorded on, and she still kicks ass. When it comes down to the voice, Tarja has Anette beat.

But Anette has a hell of a lot more stage presence. Yeah her range isn't quite as good but she can motivate a crowd. Both times I've seen her live, it's been a great concert.

That, and almost all bands have an ego. It's part of the job. The band has one, and Tarja has one. Times change and so do members of a band.

TonySoprano 2009-06-19 11:11:08 AM
Im a huge Nightwish fan...been listening since Oceanborn... Ive seen them in concert about 6-7 times and met them all several times....I saw Tarja with them in Cleveland OH in 04-05 maybe... the show was great, but right after the show her jerk ass bf grabbed her and threw her in a car and sped off... the rest of the band hung around and talked to everyone. I like Anette alot and try not to compare her to Tarja...because, well...you can't. I loved their old stuff with Tarja, and I love the new stuff with Anette...If you haven't checked them out, go back and listen to Oceanborn/Wishmaster/Century Child/Once... then put on their new stuff and try not to compare to the 2.

MikoSquiz 2009-06-19 11:39:54 AM
She may be a half-decent singer but she's useless without competent songwriters. It's over.

Mike Heathen 2009-06-19 02:03:22 PM
I like Dark Passion Play, but it is a decidedly different direction for them. I've seen them twice with Annette. I was surprised how good she sounded when they played some of the older songs. Obviously she had to change them up to alter the vocal range, but it was still good.

And I watched the Sopranos, and Meadow never really did anything for me, but that picture Epsilon posted is a helluva thing.

Scarrio 2009-06-19 03:01:52 PM
MikoSquiz: She may be a half-decent singer but she's useless without competent songwriters. It's over.

I can't agree more. Her voice is great but the last album she did, the music was rather bland. The vocals were fine, but the instrumentation was dull.

iketurner 2009-06-20 09:36:24 AM
The only reason I think NW didn't just have Marco sing would be that it would in essence be another more modern version of Tarot IMO. Don't get me wrong I absolutely LOVE Tarot and NW. Marco is an inspiration for me as a singer and as a musician. I like NW older material as well but love their new music too. So I'm a fan of both....

On the other hand.... Jorn Lande is back in Masterplan! Joy!
