they just announced the schedule and sent out an announcement email. i'm sure they're getting pummeled with traffic.

No Barry Manilow, No ABBA, no Osmond reunion?

I thought this tour was cutting edge?

Why does the Lollapalooza site deem it necessary to have the clearspring.com button1.swf spyware?

Got tix????

you should teach them a lesson by instead throwing tickets at a farker that didn't ask for them. use a random selection criteria, like... i don't know - maybe to whoever made the initial comment in this thread.

Hat trick?

the undercard is heavy with awesome. i'm pumped.

and even though the headliners aren't quite up to their usual par, i know i'll still be pumped when beasties and jane's take the stage.

nothing like concerts in grant park at night. beautiful scene.

Kings of Leon and Depeche Mode on at the same time on Friday? Damn, if I was going that would be a tough freaking choice.

i'd consider saying the same thing about depeche mode too though. oh well, it'll be a good excuse to beat the crowds to the red line.

thomps' saturday:

frederico aubele

could be, i have no frame of reference. just not a band that i'm at all excited about. i think i'd go if they had skinnier jeans or more ironic tshirts.

so i've heard. my curiosity levels are piqued. i do know that even as recently as 2005, they were selling out 55,000 person arenas on their own merit. that's festival headliner pull alone.

Have you seen them live? I've heard a lot of their studio stuff, was interested in seeing them when they were here for Voodoo Fest in New Orleans.

They sucked live. I mean, horrible. Ended up apologizing to my friend for buying him his tix for his birthday (and he's a big fan).

Just an FYI for ya. Maybe it was just one off show, I don't know.

yeah i saw them last time they came through chicago and i wasn't at all impressed. i'm hoping the bigger outdoor venue will suit them better.

i saw them in chicago and they were awesome live. from what i've heard from many friends this is their experience also. my guess (and it's still a guess b/c i've only seen them once) is that yours was a one off experience.

Don't see any of them. Go to Lollapalooza, and then intentionally stay as far as possible from any stages, leaving the bands to play for empty fields. This won't be any sort of statement. It'll just be funny. Well, it'll be funnny for me, at least. Let's put the "Lol" back in "Lollapalooza."

Tough call, really. I've not seen either in concert to be honest, though my friends that turned me on to Deerhunter said their live shows are supposed to be quite good. Heard the same about Lou though, too, and I'd imagine that he's used to playing bigger stages like this.

This song (new window) came up on my iPod on the way to work. They've got that new psychedelic rock thing going. Lots of clips on YouTube if you dig around.

I just saw them at Bonnaroo, they were pretty good. Of course, I was at the way back of the stage crowd and starting to sun stroke so my mental acuity at that point is questionable.

Nice. Only one conflict for me early on Saturday (Robert Earl Keen or Gomez? I think Gomez wins that one).

Kaiser Chiefs
Lou Reed
Vampire Weekend

Skullduggery 2009-06-17 05:24:32 PM
Lou Reed is one of the top two shows I've ever seen. I saw him in Santa Fe, September '06. I was a soph in HS. I made my dad drive us down.

/Your lawn, can I stay on it?

I was going to go the day Depeche Mode played if enough of the second and third tier bands I wanted to see where on that day.

/not going.

Great_Milenko 2009-06-17 05:37:19 PM
I've heard of about 16 of all these bands, but I was curious enough to go and find out what "care bears on fire" sound like.

Boy, was that a mistake.

Huge line-ups like this, while novel, devalue music and artists.

While I think it undermines a lot of artists' live shows (huge stage, shorter sets, etc.), I don't think it devalues their music at all. If anything it introduces their music to someone that might not have otherwise heard them.

I can count the bands I recognize on one hand.

Lou Reed? Really? Wow....

Saving my concert money for Slayer, thanks anyways....

And they're everywhere for some of the reasons Solid State Vittles pointed out. If anything, big lineups help bands profit more by promoting them so that when they do headline their own concert, more people will buy tickets. Bands don't make jack off CD sales, they make their money by touring. So performing at shows like this actually adds value to the artists bank account, not the RIAA's or the label's

I meant they're novel in the sense that most live music occurs outside this particular model. There are probably 5,000 live musical happenings in my town each year. Maybe five of them are festival-type events. I think our ears and brains are only able to process so much in one sitting without getting fatigued. At that point, you're perceiving a less-than-optimal performance, regardless of how good the band might be. I've been turned onto some good music at festival shows, but I'd rather go see one good band with an opener or two, and experience their vision than go see 20 bands and just get a superficial sampling of each.

NorCalLos 2009-06-17 07:05:43 PM
...also, seeing having a band that is used to playing clubs and small theaters play in a 50,000 seat venue does them and the audience a disservice.

Somehow I think that shows like 'palooza aren't created for the audiophiles in mind ... but the vast hordes of stoners and fratboys. And if there's beer, babes and loud music, they're in heaven.

If I could count the many heshers and fratboys I've seen at festival shows passed out and/or puking before dark. Same goes for hippychicks, but the stuck-up high maintenance chicks are my favorite.
