(UPI) Amusing Man thinks it's cool he's had the same license plate number for the past 40 years until he gets 170 tickets from the Department of Revenue, who also thought it was a cool number to use when testing new ticketing equipment   (upi.com) divider line 111

Worse yet. He's expected to still have to pay them all. Afterall, a ticket means he broke the law, right? And tickets have nothing to do with revenue generation, right? RIGHT?

It took over 10 years to figure out that '0' was some guys license plate number?

Reminds me of the guy whose plate was "No Plate" and he got arsetons of tickets because of it

Feddor said he went to the Revenue Department and the Department of Administrative Hearings for help, but was unable to resolve the issue. Hearing officer Zipporah Lewis made several calls to officials in an attempt to help Feddor, but he said "the people she encountered at the other end of the phone seemed to be annoyed and bothered by her. Most tried to quickly end the call."

I guess you could say it took some time for it to register with them.

How did I know, prior to reading TFA, that this was from Chicago? Gee, I wonder...

How much you wanna bet this isn't the end of the story. A year from now we see a new Fark headline "Man goes on rampage after trying to get erroneous tickets excused for over a year".

I mean, after all, it IS Chicago.

FTFA: Revenue Department spokesman Ed Walsh told the Tribune officials were unaware there was a "0" plate in circulation -- Feddor's family has been using it for 40 years -- or that he was receiving tickets from the equipment testing. He said the tickets would be wiped out and any fines payed by Feddor would be refunded.

I really hope that was an attempt at a joke...

Should the Chicago PD or IL State Police be doing testing on things like this, instead of the Department of Revenue? But citizen it's for safety, not revenue!

This is why people don't think the government can handle stuff like health care.

The key here is that those in law enforcement have a special kind of stupid on their side when it comes to policy and... well... enforcement.

The Department of Revenue is not "in law enforcement." It seems Fark has a special kind of stupid on their side when it comes to cops.

I remember reading an article that talked about how you should get a license plate that is either a series of zeroes and O's, or ones and I's. The idea was that police could not effectively read your license plate, if ever the need arose. It sounded like an interesting idea, but I feel that it would just piss off cops more.

While everyone else biatches about the idiocy of the non-query testing, I'm going to go ahead and biatch about the brilliant use of the English language by this stellar reporter:

"...He said the tickets would be wiped out and any fines payed by Feddor would be refunded."

Really? I mean, it's not like they were trying to spell "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" or something.

I think that's great.

How much do you wanna bet that if that guy gets tickets more than half of them are invalidated because the ticket incorrectly notes his plate as "OOODDOO" or "OODOODO" instead of "OOODODO"?

Just remember, these are the same folks we want to entrust to run our health-care system.

"Sorry, Mr. John Smith of 34th Street in Chicago, you can't have that cancer treatment. You see, there's a John Smith on 4th Street in Chicago who we just paid for his cancer treatment. You must be trying to bilk the system."

I have heard this story before!

This may just be an urban legend but. . .
When California first started issuing personalized license plates, one guy got the license "none". Turns out every city in California towed his car away multiple times. It was even in several different impound lots at the same time. And the bill! I heard it was about $53,000. This would be back in the 70s I think.

Anyone know if this is true?

*rolls eyes*

No. This is the same folks who you want to entrust with PAYING for your health-care system.

Do you similarly disparage your local firemen as being incompetent beaureaucratic fools since they, too, are funded by tax dollars?

(or do you work for an insurance company and you're worried that your "denying care to paying clients" job might be on the line?)
