So you can't use these to sharpen your shiv either, right? Sounds like a marvelous idea that will dramatically reduce the amount of stabbings.

opiumpoopy 2009-06-15 07:54:50 AM
If your partner replaces your existing kitchen knifes with these, it might be time to talk about your relationship.

If you outlaw guns, knives and pointy sticks, people will hit each other with rocks. It's not about the weapon.

Whamdangler 2009-06-15 08:27:01 AM
/but it's still really good for slashing

corsec67 [TotalFark] 2009-06-15 08:41:48 AM
I have a kitchen knife that is kind of like that. It has a rounded point, which is REALLY REALLY annoying when you want to ... stab stuff, like plastic bags, fruit, etc.

Remember, a sharp knife is a safe knife.

The stupid is partially mitigated by the fact that the commercial product, the Taylors Eye Witness 'Classmate' Home Economics Knife, is intended for use in schools, not as a cure-all for street stabbings.

It could well be argued, though, that there are bigger problems than the shape of the knives if you have to stop the little darlings stabbing each other in Home Ec. class.

hazeleyedwolff: If you outlaw guns, knives and pointy sticks, people will hit each other with rocks. It's not about the weapon.

It is about the weapon, in terms of culture, lethality, accessibility, and portability. One of the difficulties, though, is that the 'best' weapon for street crime can be acquired anywhere and carried almost undetectably.

Not a new idea.

If you notice, most table flatware knives have rounded tips. Yes, it is for the same reason (so you don't stab your meal mates for bad manners).

Ah, that's why it costs so much, then. I wondered why it cost around 10x what a normal knife costs... question answered.

Use it as a garrote.

And I'll bet that if I REALLY wanted to, I could kill somebody with one of those knives. Say, by slicing important blood vessels and causing exsanguination. Who needs a point?

I do wonder why people are seemingly incapable at looking at the CAUSES of crime, rather than the tools thereof.

He said: "It can never be a totally safe knife, but the idea is you can't inflict a fatal wound. Nobody could just grab one out of the kitchen drawer and kill someone."

Is that a challenge?!

A deep slash wound is worse than deep stab which is worse than most hand gun bullet wounds. Is this another case of knee jerk reaction?

Another Government Employee: Not a new idea.

The reason why most flatware knives don't have a point is because they are dual purpose: To cut soft foods, and to spread things like butter. This is also why they are generally not sharpened. It's not to protect you from being stabbed by a tablemate, it's to keep you from injuring yourself.

PerfectStorm 2009-06-15 08:59:43 AM
I disagree with TFA. You can still stab someone with it...it'll just hurt a helluva lot more and do a lot more damage on the way in.

The question is, does it slice, dice and julienne?

Imagine the damage one of those things will do when stabbed.. the blunt edge will surely cause more pain then a regular knife.

Those knives are horrible ideas.

Probably more like 4x, given that Taylor's is a high quality Sheffield based maker, but you can't knock school supplier status from a manufacturer's POV. Huge mark-ups, and the customer complains if you ever do any product development.

In a few years all food sold in the UK will need to be pre-cut, and in sizes too small to possibly choke on.

Crime has nothing to do with weapons but with underlying social problems like poverty and mental health issues.

Soon, if the Brits think about it, they may take one step closer to the realization that it might not be the tool that is really responsible for killing people. When they figure it out, the Americans, who always seem to be a bit behind Europe in these liberal matters will also come to the conclusion.

It's simple, ______________ don't kill people, it's people with _________ and _________ and _________ etc, that kill people.
Pick your tool, it can kill people.

Mad-n-FL 2009-06-15 09:08:14 AM

Causes are HARD stupid knee jerk politics that insults the intelligence of a rock, is easy and gets the headlines in the Sun before everyone has forgotten all about this latest "folk devil"

And eventually they will be required to use chopsticks. Blunt, sponge-tipped chopsticks.

Even then, some asshole American will tie them up and shove chips up their nose while eating their tropical fish.

FightDirector: I do wonder why people are seemingly incapable at looking at the CAUSES of crime, rather than the tools thereof.

Because any time you look at the causes of crime, it becomes a political circle-jerk, with the perpetrators and their enablers seeking to deflect the blame onto the indirect causes, in an effort to mitigate the perpetrator's personal responsibility in the crime.
