I don't know why, but imagining a drunk driver getting told he has been busted by "Would U Like Fries" is very amusing.

Why not take the next step and install breathalyzers with deputies at the door of every bar?

/ Oh right, its not harassment if a cop does it from a fast food restaraunt...

Why the hell aren't we just forcing every single car sold in America to have a breathalyzer lock in order to start? Sure, it wouldn't completely end drunk driving (Hey buddy, want to make $5? Blow in my lock for me when I start my car) but it would sure as hell put a dent in it.

Why Stop There,

Add

Video Cameras in Every Room, Including the Bed Room
Full Cavity Search as Airports and Gov Buildings
Random Drug Screens for the Population
Full Audio/Video logs sent to the Gov of all Therapy, Doctor and Confessional Visits

That should pretty much end crime, and we will all be safe

Apparently it's too much work for the cops to drive around and pull over people who are weaving all over the road.

I see drunk drivers all the time, but the cops are too busy harassing sober people to catch them.

Morons.

Good headline.

The article says "money for the intermittent program is coming from a $128,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety."

Governor's highway safety agencies are state agencies created to spend money from the federal government. The article means "money for the program comes from federal gas taxes which the government tells us have to be increased because there isn't enough gas tax revenue to pay for road construction and repair." Look, I just found $128,000 spare change the government could spend on road construction and repair.

You are allowed to leave a bar drunk, but you are not allowed to drive to Wendy's drunk?

Could that be it?

You are allowed to leave a bar drunk

In some states that is not true. Drunk in public is a crime.

If you act drunk and are a nuisance, yes. Otherwise they won't bother you.

IIRC, charging bar drinkers for being drunk led to Fark's "die in a fire" meme. But I can't find the original thread.

I don't know if waiting at a fast food joint is the best place to catch drunk drivers. Most of the customers are probably going to be under a different influence then alcohol if you know what I mean.

No, in Texas, you can get a public intoxication for being IN the bar drunk. They arrested a business traveler for being drunk in the bar of their hotel that they were staying at.

One of the many reasons I don't live in Texas.
Whos kidding, I live in AZ, much worse.

How about, we will not support companies that aid draconian measures from the government. If Burger King starts doing this, then everyone will eat at McDonalds from now on.

gregscott [TotalFark] 2009-06-14 10:20:01 PM
according to the recent article on a state reverting to a dirt road, surfacing a dirt road costs only 10,000 per mile, while resurfacing an asphalt road costs 100,000 per mile. If those figures are correct, then the money saved by abandoning this program would pay to resurface only 1.25 miles. IMnsvHO, I think spending the money on enforcement makes sense, though it may be somewhat punitive to many farkers.

Right. Except for the fact that nobody wants drunks on the road except for other drunks.

I don't really have a problem with this. If your drunk ass is driving to a fast food joint, you probably should be arrested. Can't toll booth operators report drunk drivers?

Wonder what percentage would actually go to drunk driving arrests and what percent to just plain snooping for lil things like a crack in the windshield? Tickets for this that and the other would really make the $$$$. Not that they'll ever get the chance to do it...

cancerous86 2009-06-14 10:31:33 PM
Glad it got struck down. Police have no place working on private property in order to ensnare drunk drivers.

As a police officer I know once said, "Everyone does something illegal, I can follow you for five minutes and come up with a reasonable excuse to pull you over".

The guilty aren't the only ones who should fear the police.

eas81 2009-06-14 10:31:55 PM
The Pima County Sheriff's Department has a new campaign targeting drunken driving. Operation Would U Like Fries, or Operation WULF, will put undercover deputies inside 24-hour fast-food restaurants to spot impaired drivers placing their orders.

was I the only one to read that as operation MILF at first?

/alcohol is involved.

Cops are scourge on society. A farking cancer. Want to stop wasteful spending? Fire half the cops across the country. It's not like they are ever going after violent or dangerous criminals anyway.

Goble_EZ 2009-06-14 10:34:40 PM
Hey, these folks are trying to sober up with some food! Any chance for the cops to add to the coffers. It's all just revenue enhancement. Drunk driving is bad, I'll admit, but this reeks of monetary gain for the cops and courts.
