Random question that's been bugging me the last couple of weeks: Why is it that the NHL and NBA playoffs last about the same amount of time (NHL begins their season and post-season slightly early than than NBA) but basketball is the one that gets the reputation for having the "playoffs that last forever"? If the Lakers had won game three, the series would've been over Thursday and the Stanley Cup would've been the one to be decided later.

/Sorry, 60 Minutes was on and I was channeling my inner Andy Rooney.

Because people care about basketball much more than hockey.

They both get the reputation of lasting forever, it's just that no one talks about Hockey, period.

/3 months till NHL pre-season, or something like that

In that case the NBA finals would have been 3 games shorter than the NHL finals. In fact the only scenario where the NBA finishes before the NHL is if the NHL plays 7 and the NBA plays 4.

The real issue is why they're still playing winter sports in June, though it pales in comparison to MLB's 9-month season.

TemperedEdge 2009-06-14 07:47:36 PM
There's another sport with Playoffs happening now?

Oh well. The NBA will never be the NHL.

Moving on...

FTF(slightly more)A. The point's still valid. I guess.

GrahamCracker 2009-06-14 07:50:26 PM
TemperedEdge, you mean not like the NHL as in it will actually have decent ratings and a legitimate fanbase, as well as players from the United States?

Anyways, I hate both Orlando and LA, and all I was hoping was that this series would go to game seven and be ridiculously violent and bloody. Oh well.

never had kobe before. or wagyu*, either. store up the way had kobe recently. i was tempted, but it was i think $28 or $30 per pound, and i don't think my grill gets hot enough to cook kobe. isn't it supposed be cooked at like, 500 degrees?

*if i have my terms right, only kobe beef from kobe can be advertised as kobe beef, whereas "wagyu" is beef from kobe cows but raised elsewhere.

oh, and GO MAGIC.

I predicted before the series that the Lakers would lose one game by 20+. I have a feeling I won't be wrong on that. I expect Orlando to have one last good game before falling in 6.

Orlando didn't have a good game in game 3? They shot freaking 63%.

Many times in recent history, the NHL playoffs have started before the NBA playoffs and end afterward. This changed a bit when the NBA went to best-of-7 for the first round. It might have happened again this year, but the Stanley Cup Finals were on a pretty tight schedule this year.

I said "one last good game", not "one good game". I think when you're up 3-1, you either take the night off or go for the kill, and I think the Lakers will take the night off. Combine that with Orlando coming in with a "not without a fight" mentality, I feel the Lakers will get taken behind the shed tonight.

Oh. I thought you meant "one last" as in "they have gotta have at least 1 in this series and they haven't had it yet".

My bad.

they are a couple of plays away from this being a 3-1 Magic series. if pau gasol doesn't commit goaltending coutrney lee doesn't miss that layup, or the magic don't blow a 5pt lead with like, one minute left, this series looks totally different.

and not a Laker hater either. i just think it would be cool for the unheeralded Magic to be able to say, "not only did we knock off LeBron, we also punched LA in the mouth."

but hey, if LA wins, that's fine. it would be good for Kobe's legacy and add another layer to the offseason, as he still has an opt-out clause.

Alternatively, I can see Kobe just ending it tonight. He's been wanting this for so long and its now so close, I can't see him letting up. He wants to finish it. And the Lakers have enough players like that to do it.

True, but I don't see Orlando letting themselves lose this game. I see Orlando getting out to a huge start. If they get out to a big lead, I don't think they'll take their boots off of LA's throats tonight. And even with as driven as Kobe's been, I think there's a part of him that wouldn't mind closing it out at home, so I don't think he'll be in "total closeout" mode.

Since I'm in South America right now, watching the finals being acted out live by a team of donkeys, your complaint about no HD feed made me cry.

Question from an independent observer to Lakers fans (which seems to make up most of the people here): Do you want the Lakers to win it now, or lose tonight and win on home court? Where do you think the players would rather win it?

Win now. You never want to lose a game.

Well, I'm up on a mountain all night, observing on a telescope where there's no TV, so I kinda want them to loose so I can actually watch them win later. Still, I can listen to the internet radio, so I won't complain that much. I also wouldn't complain if they won.
