You want the context?

CHRIS MATTHEWS (HOST):Evan Thomas is editor at large for Newsweek magazine. Evan, you remember 1984. It wasn't 100 years ago. Reagan and World War II and the sense of us as the good guys in the world, how are we doing?

EVAN THOMAS: Well, we were the good guys in 1984, it felt that way. It hasn't felt that way in recent years. So Obama's had, really, a different task We're seen too often as the bad guys. And he, he has a very different job from ... Reagan was all about America, and you talked about it. Obama is - we are above that now. We're not just parochial, we're not just chauvinistic, we're not just provincial. We stand for something, I mean in a way Obama's standing above the country, above above the world, he's sort of God.

Okay, so it still sounds to me like Thomas called him "sort of God".

Does take long for the Republicans to call anybody in authority their deity, does it? Maybe that's their problem?

Old news is Old news.

I mean really, this is the first Sunday that Evan Thomas is holding services in praise to his deity, he spoke to the flaming bush last week.

Heh, pretty unfortunate quote. It sounded out of context, so here's a clip with a bit more context linky.

He wasn't saying that he thinks he's God. He was explaining Obama's idealism in terms of acting messianic. Which is what Republicans have often attacked Obama for.

You're a god?
I'm a god.
I'm not the God, I don't think.
You're not a god. Believe me. This is years of Catholic school talking.
How do you know I'm not a god?
Because it's not possible!... Is this some kind of trick?
Maybe the real God uses tricks. Maybe He's not omnipotent.

Thomas was obvious comparing Reagan's nationalism with Obama's proclivity to see all sides.
He could've put it more artfully, but he was saying it off the cuff in a TV interview, not an opinion piece for Newsweek.

Excuse me for growing tired of the right dumbing down every sound bite to the lowest common denominator. See: Palin, Sarah re: Letterman, David, etc.

It's not that complex an idea or a soundbite.
It's a political party so obviously desperate for a toehold that they take any opportunity to coarsen the discourse.

He also points out that times are different. It is not just a contrasting of Reagan with Obama.

He could've put it more artfully, but he was saying it off the cuff in a TV interview, not an opinion piece for Newsweek.

So it's still his publicly stated opinion. So what?

Excuse me for growing tired of the right dumbing down every sound bite to the lowest common denominator. See: Palin, Sarah re: Letterman, David, etc.

I'm of the opinion that Palin is only making herself look dumber by not being able to handle being made fun of by a late night TV talk show host.

Sadly, I suppose if Newsweek is no more unbiased than David Letterman then I guess this comment should be ignored as insignificant just as I feel Letterman's comments are insignificant.

It's just that Chris Mathews and Newsweek try to frame themselves in a more serious light.

Exactly, they're desperate to get any kind of traction against Obama right now and would like to have people perceive the media as being liberal. That allows the media to continue being center right or far to the right, with the exception of a very few media outlets.

Taking things out of context and/or making an issue out of nothing is not new though. Palin demonstrated this in the last week.

All Apologies: That allows the media to continue being center right or far to the right, with the exception of a very few media outlets.

UCLA study of political news coverage:

Of the 20 major media outlets studied, 18 scored left of center, with CBS' "Evening News," The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times ranking second, third and fourth most liberal behind the news pages of The Wall Street Journal.

Only Fox News' "Special Report With Brit Hume" and The Washington Times scored right of the average U.S. voter.

The most centrist outlet proved to be the "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer." CNN's "NewsNight With Aaron Brown" and ABC's "Good Morning America" were a close second and third.

"Our estimates for these outlets, we feel, give particular credibility to our efforts, as three of the four moderators for the 2004 presidential and vice-presidential debates came from these three news outlets - Jim Lehrer, Charlie Gibson and Gwen Ifill," Groseclose said. "If these newscasters weren't centrist, staffers for one of the campaign teams would have objected and insisted on other moderators."

The fourth most centrist outlet was "Special Report With Brit Hume" on Fox News, which often is cited by liberals as an egregious example of a right-wing outlet. While this news program proved to be right of center, the study found ABC's "World News Tonight" and NBC's "Nightly News" to be left of center. All three outlets were approximately equidistant from the center, the report found.

"If viewers spent an equal amount of time watching Fox's 'Special Report' as ABC's 'World News' and NBC's 'Nightly News,' then they would receive a nearly perfectly balanced version of the news," said Milyo, an associate professor of economics and public affairs at the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Five news outlets - "NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," ABC's "Good Morning America," CNN's "NewsNight With Aaron Brown," Fox News' "Special Report With Brit Hume" and the Drudge Report - were in a statistical dead heat in the race for the most centrist news outlet. Of the print media, USA Today was the most centrist.

I don't think calling to attention a risible statement comparing Obama's actions to God's are that far-fetched.
