I was on the highway with one of those Nissan's back in January driving home from the Cotton Bowl. Beautiful car, and looked like it could turn on a dime.

Dear lord, that's some expensive insurance (including the average).

"Automobile insurance premiums are dropping; the average in May was at its lowest point in a year at $1,871 per car, down from the national average of $1,982 in October. But they continue, for most, to be a major outlay.
(/Getty Images)"

What?

That's so much more expensive than here in the UK. Guess it's 'cos y'all drive tanks.

I wouldn't expect to pay that much unless I was either 18 years old and just passed my driving test, or else was driving something huge and had a record of at-fault claims.

"Premiums are dropping; the average in May was at its lowest point in a year at $1,871 per car, down from the national average of $1,982 in October"

"Owners of luxury autos such as the BMW M5, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Porsche 911 pay for that kind of prestige--$2,020, $2,088 and $1,819, respectively."

so, it says average insurance is around $2,000 a year, and it says the cost to insure a BMW M5 or Porsche 911 is around $2,000 a year.

I doubt the average person has a $80k car.

Not all of us. Our two cars (both Hyundais in fact, 07' Elantra and 09' Accent) cost about $1400 combined per year to insure at the moment.

And I get a good laugh watching people take 10 minutes trying to get their freakishly huge vans and SUVs into the spaces around here.

~$2500 a year to insure one, I could handle that.

I don't understand that number either. They're saying the average per car rates are the same as insuring a brand new Porsche?
I pay around $600 a year for insurance with a six year old car and not quite clean driving record. Of course I don't drive a tank, so I'm not crushing entire families in parking lot fender benders.

fta: Hummer H2 is the 8th most stolen car.

I'm guessing that's for parts that get sold overseas, because it's not like the things don't attract attention to themselves. The H2 has five years of production left, so plenty of time to climb up the list.

When I was living in Bulgaria, seemed the mob favored silver-grey models.

True, they may have used mean. I do know that my insurance dropped in half after a move from the south (crime/lawsuits) to the midwest, but even then it wasn't $1800. So maybe that is a national mean. Median would be much more appropriate.

yeah, that national average seems a BIT high.
My insurance is about $1000/ year for 100/300/100 with $500 deductible. Car is a '98 Volvo S70, but I am unmarried (till october!) and have a couple tickets on my record, all variables that pump up my rates a good bit.

TFA is about freaking car insurance. What do you expect?

PsychoPhil 2009-06-14 11:00:22 AM
About $1400 / year for my '06 Mustang (V8), and $600 / year for my '99 Harley Wide Glide.

I've known folks with insurance premiums north of $3000 a year, and not because they drive sports cars, but because they're really bad drivers.

I don't know if there's a point where insurance companies can say 'no' to someone based on their driving record (though at that point said people generally wouldn't care anyway...), but you'd think they would.

Hyundai's being cheap to insure? I don't believe it - virtually every one I see around here's got a few good dents and dings on it. Something about them (and Saturns!) tends to attract _bad_ drivers...

Then again, I don't think anyone out there understands where the numbers come from, not even insurance agencies...

MadManMoon 2009-06-14 11:08:11 AM
We've got 3 cars -- '08 Focus S sedan, '08 Ram 1500 4X2 Quad Cab, and '07 Shelby GT500. Oddly enough, each is roughly $1,100/year for insurance (with a higher deductible on the GT500). It's not cheap, but I'd consider it reasonable.

Yeah, not sure where they got their numbers, I pay a little under $400/6-months for a '07 Porsche Cayman ($500/$1000 deductible) and '06 F150 ($100/$200)...

From TFA:

Larger vehicles like SUVs and minivans are more likely to be family vehicles driven by mothers, who are historically less dangerous drivers. With lower risk comes lower loss potential, and thus a lower premium. Eight of the top 10 least expensive vehicles to insure are either minivans or SUVs.

Nice try, but really, doesn't turning everything into a stab at Americans get boring?

Also, to all of you who are complaining that the average rate is too high because you pay less, maybe you should revisit some old math classes (I'm talking third grade here). Every average of such a huge sample size is going to have some strong deviation in both directions.

Tenkin: Also, to all of you who are complaining that the average rate is too high because you pay less, maybe you should revisit some old math classes (I'm talking third grade here).

I'm a researcher, you dumbass. As already mentioned, it is probably the mean and not the median, which indicates it is somewhat deceptive because of the outliers. Also, a huge sample does not mean there is strong deviation (and you can only have a positively skewed sample here at most because the bottom value is 0). Before you criticize others, don't say stupid shiat you know nothing about.

You neglected to take people's credit scores into account. The average person's credit sucks now, and credit plays a huge part in determining your rate.

I guess I'm one of the folks bringing up the average. $2200/yr for a 2009 Ford Escape XLT at 100/300/100 plus uninsured. No clue as to why its so high. They tell me its because I have a penis and am not married (not those words exactly but yea). Plus I live in Vegas and we were #1 for car theft a few years ago (its dropped 20% since, now #7).

Yes, I've shopped around and they're all between $2000-2500. No accidents or moving violations ever (knock on wood). 28 y.o. Fark this town...

Or the horse just finds somewhere else to run free. I don't seem to run into any of these speed laws or traffic laws out on the track. Where I can go as stupidly fast as I want.

Hell, they even come fish me out of the gravel traps when I fark up.

Yet on the street, I drive a Mom Bomb with an auto-trans because really... what's the point? I have yet to 'win' at driving to the store and back.

Car insurance is startlingly expensive.

I pay $530 per year to insure my five motorcycles (Hayabusa, GSX-R750, S4R, KLR650, R1).

My wife pays about $800/year for her one car, a Mazda3.

Ouch.
