No way I'm going to take that bet. You KNOW it's just a matter of time before the morons show up saying that all cops are the same and that this guy took too long to shrug off the mortal coil.

I've gotten several Boobies before but you can always use more.

I figured this time I'd go with a legitimate Boobies rather than Boobies.

You should take a trip to Iran.

You're good at starting riots.

My dad spent 35 years at GM/Delphi, and has been sweating bullets worrying about whether or not he was going to keep his pension.

Even that last bastion of life-long company work is going away, I'm afraid. Pretty much the only jobs you can make a career out of in the same place/company is the Military, police, or fire department.

john83 2009-06-14 10:19:52 AM
He had his own special rank? WTF?

I have to admit, my first thought was that he'd been unable to retire due to the crappy social security in the US. Hardly the case for a long serving cop though.

/On last stint in US, saw too many elderly folks reduced to bag packing in supermarkets to make ends meet.
//Retire in piece, Sarge.

This is one of my primary arguments for the need for universal health care. The reason so many old folks are required to shag carts or be a greeter at Walmart is because they can't afford the meds that are keeping them alive. If they were able to get these meds at even an AFFORDABLE rate (something less than $12-$20 a pill, let's say), they could probably live off their Social Security and meager savings.

As it stands, though, your choice is either to go back to menial, low paying labor or just die off like good dead societal weight.

You don't be a cop for that long without being corrupt in one fashion or another. Either you are doing dirt or you covered for people doing dirt. Because of the D-day thing I won't spit on his grave.

TyrantII 2009-06-14 10:55:14 AM
Damn, a medic on Normandy at DDay?...

It's one thing to be a GI and trying to move up the beach getting shot at, it's another to be a medic and be sitting out in the open with the wounded as MG42' fire is spraying all around you.

Also, the old LEO's tend to be the best LEO's.

Hero tag for sure.

It's not sad so much as it's entirely farking predictable in that city. The only thing surprising is that there was only one burglary.

So far.

I hope that widow can move the hell out of New Orleans ASAP.

Or maybe he enjoyed his work so much, he didn't want to leave. There are people out there that retirement would be equal to a death sentence to them. The thought of retirement causes them to lose the will to live.

You do realize that sarcasm is hard to detect in text, right? And in a cop thread, your comment isn't exactly over the top. Hell, it's par for the course.

I have a retired doctor down the street from me, and he works on a friends farm driving equipment every single day. He's told me that some people feel that if they stop working, they'll die.

You mean working as a public servant since the 40's and catching criminals who committed crimes against our citizens and saving dozens of lives along the way? Yeah I can totally see why that guy got confused... ;)

Wait just a damn minute!

This sumbiatch was 80 when he died, and D-Day just had its 65th anniversary.... he was FIFTEEN and a medic? HE LIED ABOUT HIS AGE WHEN HE JOINED!!

I don't know if that was good to lie on a federal application per se, but hey, that just means he was a true patriot back then, too.

He is guarding the streets for St. Pete now...

As to the "cost of meds in the U.S. stuff, socialized medicine won't help that too much, it'll just do one of two things, redistribute the cost to society as a whole or cause more oldsters to be subjected to risky surgical treatments or written off as "terminal" like so many are in the U.K. and neither is exactly a desirous situation. the reason that is the case is every drug sent for clinical testing costs the companies literally billions of dollars to develop and test, and out of a testing line of a thousand drugs maybe .1-2% will be shown as viable for the market and have the weight of the financial burden of the whole testing line to support.

He was 84 when he died. That makes him 19 at D-Day.

And as someone else pointed out, medic + D-Day = Hero
