"The policy is there if something becomes an issue or problem," City Manager Jennene Norman-Vacha said. "Then we want to be able to address it. It's just good policy."

Sounds a little like an invitation to selective enforcement.

If I was the mayor, I'd point out that this would include checks of the council member's teenage daughters when they come in and work for the city for a summer job.

"Men have it hard enough just to do a day's work and not be enticed by a woman who is not dressed properly," Staib said at the time. "If you have to bend over for the bottom file . . . that would entice any man, unless he is not completely a man."

Now, where have I heard that reasoning before?

OK, you bust your knuckles open working on a city dump truk...

And you have to cover them, how?

Or if your road crew has arm tats, they have to wear long sleeves in the summer.

I would have voted against the code, It's stupid.

They Mayor had a good point in questioning how this would be enforced. They have enough trouble school dress codes, imagine a bunch of whiny municipal employees.

I just answered your question, yellow_ducki.

There are lots of people who work at apparently respectable jobs who don't bathe or deodorize themselves. I worked with a dude way back in the middle 90s who not only did not bathe regularly, but who also subsisted on an all-whisky and fried food diet. His sweat smelled abominable. Another man, who held the same position, was amply obese and reeked of urine from dribbles into his skin folds (I guess).

These guys made really good money; it was not 'dirt because of poverty'.

I'm guessing you wouldn't want to see those. If she's "bending over" to reach a bottom file, she's obviously not accustomed to wearing a skirt.

There are lots of people who can't wear deodorant because they're either allergic or their skin's too sensitive. Last thing you want is employees scratching their arm pits constantly. That said, in practice this is probably less "wear deodorant" and more "don't smell". I also hope they say antiperspirants, not just deodorants.

Loosely on the subject of dresscodes, there's a woman at my local Tescos who clearly cuts herself. Her arm is always covered with slightly swollen red lines and she wears a short sleeved shirt and makes no attempt to cover them up. It's pretty nasty, but I imagine her manager is too much of a chicken to make her cover up her arms or to say she can't work if she does that.

Agarista: What about people who are allergic to deodorant?

I bought a clear stick of scented deodorant one day and after using it once or twice, my armpit skin started to peel and it was really painful. They refunded me and offered me 3 sticks of non-perfumed deodorant, to which I do not have an allergic reaction. I am not sure it's very common to be allergic to any kind of deodorant.

I apologize, I guess I didn't read the comments close enough. I can't figure out what would compel a person to live like that. Lack of self-awareness or they just don't care?

I figured it out in middle school, on my own. I realized that showering every three days wasn't cutting it.

No reason to apologize, it seems so elementary. I'm with you; I don't want anyone to smell me and think I am unclean. Even so, everyone seems to have that one smelly coworker.

P.S. our boss finally pulled Fattie aside and told him to wash his butt. He had zero odor the next day, but his roommate said he clogged the drain of the tub and left a 6" tall ring on the porcelain!

UnspokenVoice [TotalFark] 2009-06-14 11:44:00 AM
I guess I would be categorically against this because I should not be forced to dress to comply to a standard that is not my own.

However...

A person needs to be responsible, if people can't then we make rules and regulations.

Those people, the offensive ones, are the reason we do such. Our laws and such are there to curtail or provide punitive damages (ostensibly) for those who offend what we have, as a society (ideally), decided as a standard.

I hate stinky people. This applies to those who wear too much stinky stuff or bathe in very stinky stuff. I appreciate that they want to smell what is, in their opinion, nice. I dislike their odor being so strong that I too am forced to smell it.

I don't really give a shiat how people dress though if you're in public there are standards and you should adhere to them because, contrary to what snowflakes think, you really don't have a right to be offensive. (Which is why we punish offenses you know, I shouldn't have to explain that but this is Fark and, well...)

I have thought about it but, alas, I must go fishing right now so I won't delve into it at this time. It says something, by the way, just not a whole lot. How much can one possibly say about the subject?

And why yes, yes I have been eating prescription narcotics this morning. How about you?

However, I am wondering which of the staff has such a stinky cooter that made the "...underwear" portion of the regulation necessary?

And what they are going to do with her office chair??

And keep her out of the water, you'll never get that smell off the fish.
