The guys that did your version also bussed my table after dinner tonight, then washed the dishes. Pretty talented, I must say. Unfortunately not in the same league as Eagles (the real name of the band. They do not like it when "the" is used in front of their name).

That made millions.

I know people hate the eagles for some reason but there hasnt been better music made that sold as much as they did. Most good music never makes the mainstream but they push shiat on us then wonder why sales suck.

I don't hate them as musicians - plus Desperado is a pretty killer song. But Hotel California is just shiatty.

True story - it is one of the most loved English language songs in China. While I was teaching over there, I heard the farking thing like 8 times a day. I hated it beforehand, and now it makes me angry.

For some reason, I really hate this song. If someone plays this or Freebird, it makes me cringe.

I have nothing against other Eagles or Skynryd songs.

Don Felder RULES.
Eagles without Felder become pretty damn generic. Henley and Frey screwing Felder over is something I cannot forgive.

so your argument is they suck a little bit less than most of the manufactured pop crap that also sells a lot of records?

if i want to listen to cross-over country/folk stuff, ill listen to the byrds' "sweethearts of the rodeo", neil young's country stuff, the band, gram parsons, etc... same sort of style, but much better song writing (imho), less cheese, less "adult contemporary", more honesty.

there are some good fairly recent bands doing a modern sort of equivalent as well. I highly recommend Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt. Earlier Wilco is also pretty kick ass. Whiskytown and some solo Ryan Adams is also great. Gillian Welch is more folky/bluegrassy, but is also killer.

...my 2 cents

Your 2 cents is worth alot more. Why do people accept painfully mediocre crap like the Eagles when there are bands like these to be had. It's beyond me. Though I have to say that most of Ryan Adams is fluff, and he's just such a whiney little biatch that it makes taking him at all seriously problematic.

meehaw [TotalFark] 2009-06-14 10:27:15 AM
And might I add that this acoustic version is somehow even cheesier than the original. How can the most kitschy song this side of "Stairway to Heaven" be even worse when unplugged?

Oh, I know how...aging rockers, aging fans, reliving "glory days"...get off your lawn.

moparedtn: Don Felder RULES.

Don Felder is easily one of the most underrated guitarists in history. And as far as song writing ability, he wrote Hotel California which is one of the top selling songs in history.

The guy they have taking is place is very good and very competent, but he doesn't play as fluid as Felder.

Felder may have gotten screwed over, but we've only heard one side of the story (and yes, I read the book). The other side is that he was a whiney little biatch almost all the time and continually held the rest of the group back because of it. There is probably a reason literally nobody in the band - both past and present - really came to his defense (except for maybe a few token comments).

But Felder is a stud player and a great songwriter. Unfortunately, even THAT will not be good enough for many people here on fark.

Here's (new window) one of my favorite tunes. Frey was the lead player back then (Leadon did a lot, but mostly the country chicken-pickin stuff - Frey was the one playing most of the leads you were most familiar with back then). But Meisner knocks it out of the park with his singing and some incredible bass playing (which he does WHILE singing thank-you-very-much).

i hated everything about ryan adams until i learned he had been in whiskeytown, and that SOME (huuuuuge accent on some) of his stuff stayed true to those roots. a friend had to sit me down and force me to listen. ok, not at gun point, but he lured me with bourbon.

but yeah, dude is a musical whore. nttawwt...

Pretty much THIS. Especially Randy Meisner. You talk about great bass players - JPJ, The Ox, Geddy Lee - yet they will try and find other bass players to talk about that they say are better than Meisner, but Meisner should be up there with the best. The best that Timothy B. Schmitt can do is play the bass lines that Meisner originated.

Well I got your late night call
You're in the center of it all
You're havin' a ball
And your really doin' fine
A west coast time
And I believe you

But here's one for the coast
The people with the most
The pretty, pretty folks
The west coast folks
Yeah here's one for the coast
The people with the most
The pretty, pretty folks
The west coast folks

And here we go again
It's never gonna end
We're all so sick of California songs
Yeah we know you love L.A.
There's nothing left to say
Please no more California songs
And fark New York too

Yeah your heaven is a lie
Just more shiat that I don't buy
Well they're headin' for the coast
They're movin' out in droves
Sendin' back reports on the radio
The message is the same
It's getting pretty lame
California dreamin's on the radio

And here we go again
It's never gonna end
We're all so sick of California songs
Yeah we know you love L.A.
There's nothing left to say
Please no more California songs
And here we go again
It's never gonna end
We're all so sick of California songs
Yeah we know you love L.A.
But there's nothing left to say
Please no more California songs
And fark New York too

Alright (x's 9)

Here's one for the coast
YEAH
And here we go again
It's never gonna end
We're all so sick of California songs
Yeah we know you love L.A.
There's nothing left to say
Please no more California songs
And here we go again
It's never gonna end
We're all so sick of California songs
Yeah we know you love L.A.
There's nothing left to say
Please no more California songs (x's 5)
And fark New York too

Calm down there, uncledefensive827. I don't have a problem with Lebowski references or legitimately disliking the Eagles, I have a problem with hipsters who say they hate them simply because The Dude said it once.

I hated that song long before the movie came along, so I am secure in my hipsterism.

No thanks. Here's the source for the name thing:

http://www.theboot.com/2009/04/30/band-name-stories-eagles/

And THIS is what you base your comment on:

'Steve Martin writes that group member Glenn Frey insists the name is Eagles (without 'the').'

Fine. Theyre friend snd maybe Glenn said that to him once but geeze I bet Ive read a dozen interviews with those guys back in the day and this was NEVER brought up, not once, ever.

So instead of some bit of rocklore we get a second hand story that has never been seen in the 35+ years the band has been around.

And for my two cents Desperado is a crappy song, also as bad as Hotel California and Tequila Sunrise - stuff I prefer to live the rest of my life never hearing again.

And just so I dont seem like a complete jerk I do like, though never listen to some of their first three albums plus the song 'one of these nights'.

Which one doesn't belong?

1. A ball-peen hammer hitting a milk bottle

2. A cat's tail caught in a blender

3. Waves lapping the beach In Maui

4. Glen Frey's voice
