The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society is my favorite Kinks record. I have been listening to it like crazy for the past year or two now...all kinds of win.

I agree. I never understood why it wasn't considered near Pet Sounds and Sgt Peppers...

Ray Davies has written 12,567,842.314 more great songs than I have (23).

Wow, all this love for The Kinks? Really? They are clearly just derivative drivel of brands that came before them.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves and never post on Fark again.

I think "Something Else" is their best album.

The Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society is so full of win
An utterly charming record.

I second the notion of it being a Brit version of Pet Sounds. Throw in the single (released about the same time) "Waterloo Sunset" and Ray Davis is clearly playing on the same late 60s team as Brian Wilson. Simply freakin' gorgeous pop music...

I've been on a Kinks kick lately myself. Been jammin "Juke Box Music" "Victoria" and "Celluloid Heroes". Also the Low Budget that someone linked to earlier.

4/10

0 for execution. 3 for sheer audacity of trying to troll a Kinks thread. 1 for alliteration.

You are clearly a horrible person, and I hope your parents tell you that you were adopted. And then you die of a horrible disease.

Ayep. I concur.
I've listened to it more in the past 30 days (which is to say bi-daily) than I did in all of the preceding 12 months. Of course I've listened to it almost weekly for the 25 years before that.

One of my first "desert isle discs" for sure.

I wasted so much time as a musician and a music admirer by ignoring the KINKS all these years.

I always liked their radio hits but only just last year finally started buying their records. I am 41 and have had everything by the Stones,Who,Beatles,Zeppelin,Cream....etc...since back in my teens.

I now only have "Something Else" and "Village Green" and feel cheated that I didn't have these 25 years ago.

I think next I will get "Arthur" and "Muswell"

/I stole the bassline from "Big Sky" while jamming with my band the other day

Am I a weirdo for liking The White Album more than SPLHCB? But still liking that less than TKATVGPS and Pet Sounds? I'll say it here, right here on the internet, so you know it matters: The song "Pet Sounds" is the greatest instrumental ever!

We share the same tale, my friend; mine's just three years ahead of yours. Hold off on those decent "Arthur" and Muswell" albums and make your next buy "Face to Face" (the bonus tracks version) instead.
Trust me :)

So - Fark is greenlighting Animal Farm and not sticking up a NSFW warning?

Srsly, VGPS is an essential album. There's a lot more to get through (especially the solo stuff) but it's a great start. And see Ray Davies at least once in your life - he can rock a stuffy hall with the 'You Really Got Me' riff.

I always admired the idea that the Kinks could produce works of such complexity & live a life of rock-n-roll carnage at the same time.

Dave was a punk before most punk rockers were born.
