Wait. You're saying one of our left-wing conspiracies actually worked?

I'm so thrilled! I've been on the double-secret lefty e-mail marking-orders list for decades and we've never managed to pull off one. (Anyone else remember the scheme to get folks not to vote for George Bush because he was an idiot? Yeah...that one worked out so well....)

I don't know if it's fair to say the "Limbaugh leads the GOP" meme started with the Democrats. Limbaugh himself has certainly been pushing the idea for a while. "Rush Runs America!" was one of his slogans for a while, if I recall correctly. Still, there's no doubt that the Obama/Democratic PR machine has been much more enthusiastic about the idea than any of the Republicans Rush is is supposedly leading.

The party has a power problem.

I hate to use the word 'cabal' but it works as well as anything else, a small group of individuals who are leading the bloody thing, and as of now, they don't have that. They've got a wide disparate group that are all trying to grab the reins, and/or acting as a spoiler to anyone who 'might' have a shot at taking charge who's minutiae of conservatism doesn't quite meet some arbitrary standard.

Everything is our fault. Because they're perfect creatures, carved out of the shiat that God himself excreted, and nothing will ever change that. And we hate America. Oh, and America is perfect except when it comes to taxes, then it's okay to kill gay people.

I would explain it, but it would take a lobotomized retard to do so, and even then he's working with a bigger intelligence quotient then Republicans have.

It was largely successful in part because:

1. Rush Limbaugh is really farking loud and obnoxious, and amazingly racist and sexist
2. Obama is cock-slapping the Dems into learning some form of subtlety
3. Every GOP higher-up kissed Limbaugh's ass
4. The GOP base themselves for the most part prefers Rush and his approach

All Obama and his mouthpieces really had to do was toss out a few left-handed comments and watch the media descend on that juicy time filler/poss. source of drama like buzzards on roadkill. He really didn't even DO anything all that drastic.

I love the idea that Von Brunn was a "leftist" because he hated neo-cons.

I guess Communists are rightists cause they hate socialists and social democrats.

This is the problem with Conservative idiocy in general. To any sane, thinking person, it's obvious that left and right is relative. Moderates are left of rightists but right of leftists, etc. This reasoning escapes -- or is deliberately ignored by -- Rightists who always attempt to lump left-wingers into the same group.

It's an incredibly piss-poor lie and a stretch of the imagination to the largest extent; like saying social democrat & social libertarian George Orwell was a "rightist" because he despised Stalinist excess.

This inability to reason successfully is the cause behind the DHS report outrage (and it's now embarassing fallout). The inability to separate their usually gardening-variety queer-hating crankery from out and out terror attacks, the narcissistic and self-centred conservative can only assume the report is about him.

There is no such outrage from leftists over reports of left-wing extremism, and it's telling. We can accept that there are bad people in our midst willing to go to violent extremes to achieve their goals, but the constant need of right-wingers to paint themselves as holier-than-thou martyrs (while decrying so-called liberal elitism) removes them from this ability to introspect, with hilarious results.

Instead of concentrating on reality, they dig themselves deeper and deeper into the land of irrelevance.

Then again, the conservatives in this country were already a touch butthurt over the election, collapse of the economy, etc. The GOP was doing some soul searching and, like clockwork, the various pundits started mouthing off and... gave the Dems a golden, if diabolical, opportunity.

Enter the Crazy Right.

I guarantee you'll never find a single signed statement from anyone that states that they either witnessed or experienced a homosexual sex act that involved Rush Limbaugh. That said, it's odd that the man would bring a bottle of Viagra with him to the DR when traveling with his buddies but not his proclaimed significant other at the time. If Rushbo takes offense at my aspersions, he can mention me by name on his radio broadcast and I'll willingly apologize.

To be fair, has he ever gone on record as being against prostitution? Because if he has, and this is like the 'drug addicts should all go to jail' shenanigans in the past, the schadenfreude is going to be epic.

anyone else click on the second chart in the article? i think what's funnier than Rush ranking so high is the fact that even among republicans, michael steele (you know, the guy whose supposed to be the ACTUAL GOP leader) has only 2% who think he's their main spokesman.

and john boehner has 0%. now that's hilarious.

Just because someone dangles bait in front of you doesn't mean you have to take it. Taunting someone in no way obliges them to reveal the truth (that you hinted at all along) that they are hate-filled, mouth-foaming, hardcore right-winger. Obama's team didn't make them that way. They merely tricked them into revealing it to everyone. Note that this wouldn't have worked if it wasn't largely true. Republicans said it wasn't true and derided the idea. Rush demanded that they give him his due respect and because it was true, they knelt in reverence.

People were asked for the name of the LEADER of the Republican party and 13% volunteered the name of a radio host who has never held any official or elected position within the party.

So, yeah, I'd say it's pretty successful. After a major loss like this, it's not uncommon for a party to lack direction*. A poll was done among Democrats after the '00 election of who was the leader of the party and the numbers were actually lower than these, the "no one" vote was quite higher... but none were radio hosts or other form of media personality, all recently held official/elected positions in the Democratic party.

Context, it helps.

*What is uncommon is for a party to spin out of control and devour themselves from within and plow full speed harder to the right in what seems like a concerted effort to drive people away.

That's the big difference. The Democrats were in disarray after 2000, and it took a long time for the leadership to be more visible to the average party member/supporter (Dean comes to mind) and even more time consuming, putting forward a solid range of candidates and party line that could move past the failures not only of 2000, but going back to the GOP take over of Congress back in... 94?

I remember the Dems back then and a few years after.
They were useless.
Had no real leader, no ideas, no direction.

And the only reason they came back was because the GOP and its members screwed up BADLY.
(corruption, facist leanings, ongoing wars, no-bid contracts, spending galore, scandals, etc, etc, etc...)

This is not what I think, this is what I saw.
So since the majority of people thought this was wrong, they had no other real option.
(What? the Libertarians? the Greens? get real, they are small beans)

Either the GOP needs to get itself together, become valuable and clean again.
Or another party needs to develop with some true influence.

Otherwise the Dems are going to be on top for awhile,
at least until they screw up and people forget the Fark-ups of the GOP.
