TFA: The bottom line is that all settlement construction is political. The "natural growth" argument is a ruse meant to disguise the real goal: determining the future of the territory before anyone has a chance to negotiate.

Well-said, Gershom Gorenberg. Pay attention, FARKers: this will be on the quiz.

GAT_00 [TotalFark] 2009-06-12 07:40:38 PM
Of course. They had no qualms about throwing the people out who lived there, why shouldn't they see anything wrong with doing anything they can to make sure those settlements are hard to take apart. No matter what international opinion is, Israel has no intention of ever leaving the territory it has stolen. They'll sabotage any conferences with irrational and unmeetable demands so the peace process cannot go forward. They have no intention of ever stopping their expansion. Living space indeed.

But critics of Israeli settlements question why American taxpayers are supporting indirectly, through the exempt contributions, a process that the government condemns.

Semite: : a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs

Anti-semetic: hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group

So what are you called if you have hostility toward or discrimination against Akkadians, Phoenicians and Arabs?

What you want to call that, btw, is a Tu Quoque fallacy.

Tu Quoque is a very common fallacy in which one attempts to defend oneself or another from criticism by turning the critique back against the accuser. This is a classic Red Herring since whether the accuser is guilty of the same, or a similar, wrong is irrelevant to the truth of the original charge. However, as a diversionary tactic, Tu Quoque can be very effective, since the accuser is put on the defensive, and frequently feels compelled to defend against the accusation.
Its rhetorically a really, really bad argument and it completely avoids the original post. Of course, the analog is bad. Frighteningly bad.

This subject here on this thread, on settlements is pretty indefensible. I see people just using rhetorical fallacies and diversion tactics when theyre brought up. It looks really, really bad each time these are used.

---------

Hopefully no one shows their ass that bad. Back to work.

I'm sure the Iroquois nation can provide significant financial support, as well as access and cooperation to their Military-Industrial Complex, not to mention regular interaction with security sources and agencies as well as a friendly voice on the United Nations Security Council.

The US is, and will remain, an ally of Israel.
That does not mean we are not going to ever so discretely tell request that they knock that shiat off.

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean, unless you're trying to point out the historic irony of Jews crowding themselves into walled communities voluntarily. And if that's the case, a nice scenic shot of Masada might be more apropos.

Got to give Obama credit on this one, he picked the one issue most impossible for the Israelis to defend as the first confrontation with the lobby. Shatter the lobby's aura of invincibility and progress towards peace becomes possible.

FTA: The president is reiterating what's stated in the 2003 road map for peace: Israel must freeze "settlement activity," meaning building and expansion of settlements. The issue is construction, not reproduction.

Sounds like this is what everyone agreed to, and Israel is trying to weasel out.

the only path towards peace is one of mutally assured destruction.

israel and iran need their own cold war, evidently.

why should israel, who has been caught spying, on more than one occasion on the united states, have nuclear weapons, while iran does not?

iran threw "our man" out in '79...and took hostages.

why should we take a position favorable to either side?

this is "little league baseball" politics at its finest.

nukes for all...or no nukes for nobody.

-anything less is total hypocrisy.

Your Faith is Creepy: Jews crowding themselves into walled communities voluntarily.

Jews are crowding themselves into walled communities?

Israel is building walls around Palestinian communities. Checkpoints, roadblocks, walls. These aren't in Tel Aviv.

/and no I am not really serious, I can't equate the Warsaw ghetto to Qalquila or whatever. But it makes for good discussion flamebait on Fark.

Okay, can we knock this off? Seriously?

Tatsuma is a settler and a criminal, and his justifications for taking Palestinian land are exactly the justifications used by Hitler to annex Austria, the Sudetenland, and eventually all of Europe (if he'd gotten his way). He's exactly the monster that his forebears were persecuted by. But his religion isn't the problem, and it's really disrespectful to the many Jews that do not hold to his Nazi-like foreign and domestic policy to insult his religion like that.

Yeah, but his justification ultimately boils down to "This land is mine because God - excuse me, "G-d" - told my ancestors it was.

You gotta love the Israeli's. From a recent Fark headline, US: "Stop building in Jerusalem." Israel:"I have to admire the residents of Iroquois territory for assuming that they have a right to determine where Jews should live in Jerusalem."

They're even calling the small settlement dwellings they're building "Obamahuts". Greatness.
