FTA:
"In the Red" figure is how much money the movie lost and is based solely on box office revenue and does not take into account other revenues such as DVD sales or merchandise. The percent figure is how much of the film's budget was never recouped from ticket sales.

In that case, every direct to DVD release grossed $0.

WTH? 4 of my favorite movies are on that list.

Eddie Murphy has the distinction of having two movies on that list, AND being #1 on the list of cumulative box office gross.

Now Hudson Hawk ridiculously farked with my brain. The DVD case made it look like your typical bad-ass Bruce Willis action flick.

From The Postman: "Probably the saddest thing to result from this bomb was the end of Costner's directing career. Many actors have been successful on the other side of the camera, but Costner can't make that claim."

Didn't he direct Dances With Wolves? One would think that directing a movie that won multiple Oscars would refute that claim quite easily...

/Baron Munchausen was, if not great, at least a good/decent movie
//For the times, Heaven's Gate wasn't that bad either

When you forget how much money it cost, and if you can ignore
the idiocy of Sandra Bernhart, HUDSON HAWK is quite fun.

Note: I never said it was 'good'. Just 'fun'.

How the fark did they blow through $100 million making Pluto Nash? Damn. $90 million for Town & Country is pretty shocking, too. I assume they heated the studios with piles of $100 bills.

IMDB says he directed Dances With Wolves and in fact won the Oscar for Best Director. I'd say that qualifies as successful. It was also the first movie Costner directed. Quite a feat. Of course he followed it up with The Postman and Waterworld, so I don't know wtf happened.

Sybarite [TotalFark] 2009-06-12 11:12:46 AM
Most of those movies are laughably awful, but Munchausen was charming and they certainly spent the effects money well. It was however the weakest of Gilliam's loose-knit trilogy of films (Time Bandits and Brazil being the other two).

This is not necessarily the "Top 14 biggest money losers of all time," but rather just a glimpse at some of the more notorious and some recent flops.

This list doesn't even represent the true disasters. This list seems to be focused on the more "over-hyped, big-budget" flops.

Since no one is asking, here might be the 20 true biggest flops:

Title- Budget/U.S. domestic gross/ % of budget

Zyzzyx Road(2006) $2,000,000/ $30/0.000015%
In Her Line of Fire(2006) $1,000,000/ $884/0.09%
Death Defying Acts(2008) $20,000,000/$5,665/0.03%
Blonde Ambition(2007) $10,000,000/ $6,422/0.06%
Scorched(2003) $7,000,000/ $8,000/0.1%

The Last Time I Committed Suicide(1997) $4,000,000/ $12,863/0.3%
Harold(2008) $10,000,000 /$13,229/0.13%
Head(1968) $750,000/ $16,111/2.1%
Molly(1999) $21,000,000/ $17,396/0.08%
All the Queen's Men(2001) $25,000,000/ $22,723/0.08%

Unknown(2006) $3,700,000/ $24,686/6.7%
Shade(2003) $10,000,000/ $25,032/0.25%
The Hottie and the Nottie(2008) $9,000,000/ $27,696/0.3%
Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists(2000) $30,000,000/ $29,245/0.1%
Freaked(1993) $12,000,000/ $29,296/0.2%

Rock & Rule(1983) $8,000,000/ $30,379/0.4%
Dirty Love(2005) $9,000,000/ $36,099/0.4%
Blonde and Blonder(2008) $8,000,000/ $42,183/5.3%
An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn(1998) $10,000,000/ $45,779/0.5%
Mini's First Time(2006) $6,000,000/ $49,034/0.8%

As has already been said, Munchausen is actually a really fun and beautiful film, it's a shame that it wasn't more succesful.

calbert [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-06-12 12:20:11 PM
of course, that is just based on the U.S. domestic gross. Just going by $$$. percentage of gross/budget would be an entirely different list:

Zyzzyx Road
Death Defying Acts
Blonde Ambition
Molly
All the Queen's Men

In Her Line of Fire
Scorched
Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists
Harold
D-Tox

Freaked
The Bridge of San Luis Rey
Nomad
My Big Fat Independent Movie
Shade

The Last Time I Committed Suicide
The Hottie and the Nottie
A Troll in Central Park
Rock & Rule
Dirty Love

I have learned from experience that a modicum of snuff can be most efficacious...

Terry Gilliam may have had a number of flops from the financial side of things, but his work has never really been accepted in its time the way it should.

Also I've seen much worse sci-fi then Pluto Nash, I'm not endorsing it as a quality movie, just saying...

Lea Thompson - Beverly Switzler
Jeffrey Jones - Dr Jenning
Tim Robbins - Phil Blumburtt
Ed Gale - Howard T Duck
Chip Zien - Howard T Duck
Tim Rose - Howard T Duck
Steve Sleap - Howard T Duck
Peter Baird - Howard T Duck
Mary Wells (III) - Howard T Duck
Lisa Sturz - Howard T Duck
Jordan Prentice - Howard T Duck

How can that many people play Howard T Duck?

I sometimes feel like I'm the only one that enjoyed The Postman. Even the author of the novel has stated that he felt it matched what he wrote wonderfully. I think one of the problems with it was that it was too slow paced for most people. The production quality was quite good and the acting wasn't bad at all -- especially Bethlehem (that actor needs to play more assholes... he's good at it.)

How did Howard the Duck make that list. That thing looked like it cost about $8 to make. I mean, they certainly didn't spend any money on big name talent. How much does it cost to put a midget in a duck costume?

The conceit is further flawed by the fact that as we speak/type multimillion dollar films are going straight down the shiatter without ever seeing as much as one public screening.

There is a link in the article to movies coming out in 2010. Check THIS shiat out:

The Expendables - Sylvestor Stallone writes, directs and stars in an action film full of modern day action stars like: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin and more! The article includes productions stills and a behind-the-scenes clip.

LOL, WHUT?

It also has this:

Sherlock Holmes - Ok, so this comes out on December 25, 2009, but, close enough. This is a "re-imagining" by Guy Ritchie starring Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams.

Didn't I read on the wires that Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen were doing this movie?

My thoughts exactly. Although I guess it wins a little bit of points in that you can read the list before clicking through. Still we'll call it a draw at Fail.

Also I think Idiocracy would fall into the list by their definition. It spent only a few weeks in theaters.

From wiki:

Budget $2-3 million
Gross revenue $444,000 (Domestic)

It must be such a depressing business. You work your ass off for two, three, more years, fighting with dozens of studio people who each want to put their spin on your idea (ripping it apart in the process), you borrow millions of dollars, rent unbelievably expensive equipment, hire tons of people, film take after take, edit for months...and when all's said and done a bunch of critics call it garbage and it disappears from theaters in two weeks.

And yet they keep churning these things out, hundreds every year...

You are not alone, sir. It's underrated, for sure. I actually greatly enjoy the pacing of it. Costner displays (and expects) a lot of patience, and, perhaps, audiences don't appreciate that.

That's Will Patton. He has an amazing career doing auio books. His interpertations of James Lee Burke's novels are outstanding. It's like a great composers work being played by a great symphony. A delight everyone should experience.
