This is the thread where the mad rush of 30-somethings go on about how Twitter is dumb/just a fad/useless while never actually trying to use it, right?

Just like that Facebook thing. Just a fad. Nobody will remember what it was called by the end of the year. Face what?

Can Twitter die yet? It's Facebook updates for the chronically lonely.

Besides, what about the guy out there who's actually named Michael Bolton?

So... can I get one? I'll show my birth certificate and everything! I am 100% legitimate, and I personally feel highly at risk of impersonation.

The reason most people will refer to it as a fad is because most have seen previous fads come and go, the likes of MySpace, replaced by Bebo, Bebo replaced by Facebook, Facebook is now being replaced by Twitter. It's like a production line. People are fickle, there is no magic ingredient in Twitter that will give it longevity beyond a year or two after the arrival of the next fad.

Calvin Coolidge 2009-06-07 04:51:36 PM
Like Senator Chuck Grassley, who had these great insights to share on twitter?:

Grassley's first tweet: "Pres Obama you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris to tell us 'time to deliver' on health care. We still on skedul/even workinWKEND."

A short time later: "Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said 'time to delivr on healthcare' When you are a 'hammer' u think evrything is NAIL I'm no NAIL."

And honestly, how many farking people on Twitter could possibly care what a 75-year old Republican Senator from Iowa has to say?

/oh yeah, that's right... only REPORTERS care about what politicians say on twitter

In contrast, what if you're deemed not famous enough to warrant certification? Could you still get certified? Soleil Moon Frye, for example...

I have a twitter account. When I see people wearing ugly clothes, or acting weird, I make jokes about them on my twitter. Also, I have a lot of friends that are always out of state and I can tell who is where by reading their twitter updates. It may not be for everyone, but I have fun with it...

Don't forget to give them a copy of your passport, social security card, all passwords to online accounts, copy of your drivers license, mother's maiden name, copy of your high school and college transcripts, blood sample for dna testing or sperm sample if you are a guy.

Twitter does not replace facebook. If anything they compliment each other.

I find two indispensable uses of facebook - the first is that I can keep in touch with people I couldn't normally keep in touch with (e.g. those that don't live in my city) and secondly updating my status every now and then keeps my parents from calling me. Hell - I would pay for the later.

The problem with twitter is that anybody can create a similar service. There are relatively low barriers of entry. It would be trivial for facebook to release a twitter like service - I am surprised they haven't done so.

You seem to think users are unaware of the fleeting nature of communication technologies. Perhaps our choice of tools is a journey and not a destination. If you wait until the ultimate form of communication is developed you won't say much for a long time. On the other hand... feel free.

I'd argue that Twitter is simply FB status updates, minus the rest of FB.

Quite a few people use their FB status in much the same way as the masses use Twitter. Was cool to follow my friends' reactions real time on FB during the Obama swearing-in for example.

I'll try to break it down for you, then. What I got out of the post is that our means of communicating are rapidly evolving. Any given method or service can be rendered obsolete by by a newer one, sometimes very quickly, but to dismiss it as "just a fad" is to miss its evolutionary impact on future services.

On his blog, on his MySpace page, on his Facebook page, on his HotorNot page on his Friends Reunited page and possibly going back as far as his Geocities page. But don't worry, if you can't keep up with his Twitter updates there's an even better service being developed somewhere as we speak that will become the next media darling for at least a year or two.

I can actually see a comercial use for Twitter, like messanger, delivery, employee status/location updates but for peronsal use it's just sad.

Twitter is inundated with twit messages such as "I'm eating Doritos," "I'm at the movies," "I'm reading" and countless other really pathetically sad and narcissistic things that no one really cares about but you desperately hope someone does in your little self-absorbed world.
