It has nothing to say about who is unemployed; it takes a high-level view of the Southern economy since World War II and looks at some of the factors that have caused the once-rapid rate of growth to slow down. Basically, after 60 years of an expanding economy, the South has become overbuilt in relation to the number of people moving there. And if you think the South is nothing more than NASCAR and pork rinds -- well, it's not even worth explaining to you how the biggest expansion in employment in the South has been in high tech sectors like telecom (Atlanta), pharmaceuticals (Research Triangle Park), and aerospace (Huntsville).

I was disappointed.

The article discussed Atlanta's malaise. Headline led me to hope it would discuss how Red States hurt themselves by by electing Bush/no_medical_fix/ripoff_Medicare_D/Walmart_jobs/China_manufacturing.

To control costs, Darryl Waltrip will now only be allowed to yell "Boogity!". Also, two teams will share a pit crew; this should increase the competitive angle.

Regional economies go in cycles, like any other economies I guess. It's a bad thing when this happens, no matter which region's getting hit.

Even though I remember hearing plenty of gloating from the Sun Belt when the Rust Belt was declining in the early 80s, I can't gloat or feel happy about their troubles today...

Well, for years now, NASCAR has had a minority/diversity program in place, trying to groom a black driver to step up to the Winston Cup big leagues, but it hasn't happened yet.

There has been a black driver in the Truck series, and there have been a couple female drivers in the past decade or so, but that's about it.

The most NASCAR has in the way of multiculturalism is Juan Pablo Montoya as a driver, Toyota as one of the manufacturers, and Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. representing homosexuals who like to drive.

This isnt poor people, its mainly the real estate market and construction that has been hit hard. Other than that Atlanta and surrounding areas are fine, I have been actively getting people jobs that have had to change fields, but thats the key they have to want to change their chosen field.

Its amazing they say our economy is so bad because we still have tons of people moving in from all across the country.

It's the last refuge of Whiteness in sports. This may in large part explain its demographic, and its popularity within said demographic.

Then again, maybe it's all media. Kids get into sports based on what, who, and how the media promote. 'S why there are so few Blacks entering baseball anymore. No buzz=no cred.
