Speaking as a Michigander, it just amuses me to no end how Washington just hung the Big 3 out to dry (a decision I kind of agreed with, with an eye towards MI's longterm health) and crowed about how sensible that made them, but are now freaking out over the ramifications of those actions.

Do they live in some fantasy land where entering bankruptcy means that nothing changes and no jobs would be lost?

They don't need to. The corporatists have already done that themselves.

And let the politics begin.

This is how government programs become unwieldy and bloated. No one is willing to sacrifice in order to do the right thing. They will fight to keep dealerships open forever, even if they aren't selling any product, pumping money to their friends and contributors under the guise of keeping jobs. They aren't creating or keeping jobs, this is welfare, and nothing more.

I'm not a Congressperson, but I play one on Fark, and let me say I am shocked, shocked, I say, that our decisions could have negative consequences. Obviously, we were not told that closing businesses would result in the loss of jobs. I have asked that a special panel be convened to investigate the cause of this loss of jobs, at a time when we Americans are struggling with the worst economy since the Great Depression. Corporations that continue to throw out honest, hard working Americans at the behest of some obscure branch of government benefit from the lapse of regulation that was instituted by the Bush Administration and without any input from Congress.

Saturn really pissed me off. I finally get to the point where I can afford a new car, and the lousy bastards had abandoned the whole reason for the company in the first place -- which was fuel efficient sport compact cars to compete with Asia's cars en-lieu of more generic midsized sedans and 4 wheeled drive crossover SUVs they've been building the last few years. Farking stupid.

Gads, I hope this will put the stupid "They are closing Republican Owned Businesses" screed. I'm sure there were several political decisions regarding the closings and I would love to see the criteria, but to simply say Obama's closing down Republican Dealerships is and was a fallacy.

One can only hope that all of the voter fraud cases get heard before then, but you're probably right. The sad thing too, is that there will probably be some truth hidden behind lots of whargarbll.

Even people from ACORN are suing the organization for Freedom of Information and claiming it's become a dirty creature.

Cars are a totally ludicrous idea anyway. We'd be better off raising taxes to make it prohibitively expensive to own a car and building usable public transit infrastructure and riding our bikes to the nearest bus stop/train station to get to work.

Using personal 1-or-more-ton vehicles powered by gasoline combustion as a primary, day-to-day transportation mode is simply retarded.

Even though countless exhaustive third party investigations into ACORN have repeatedly found that all of their inconsistencies have been errors of neglect, not of intent, thus not meeting the criteria for an indictment for fraud? Don't you think it would be a waste of taxpayer money to superfluously investigate an organization that has been investigated constantly for the better part of a decade with no criminal indictments ever brought before a court?

In fact, the only thing that conservatives' repeated crusades against ACORN has ever successfully brought up was the illegal firing of David Iglesias by the Bush Administration. Way to go.

In fact, all this WHARRGARBL about ACORN comes from bald-faced lies told by a desperate John McCain and the floundering Republican Party during the 2008 campaign season. Don't believe me?

Factcheck has it all (new window)

It would be best to leave the boonies. We should be growing food and opening parks in those po-dunk towns and we should all be living in cities. The 'white-flight' of people from cities to suburbs and exurbs is what has fueled the whole automobile problem in this country in the first place. However, in the long run people can live where they are/want.

The best compromise I can think of is to include buses from non-urban areas to connect with places of employment. Jobs aren't coming back to small towns, and the idea of the successful small independent farmer in this country is all but dead. No matter where we live, the vast majority of us are going to work in the city. The tricky part is getting employees into the city without using prohibitively expensive and pollutive freeways and personal automobiles. Mass transit is the way to go.

There is an ethical and financial benefit to not using cars that we're all going to appreciate in the coming years of escalating gas prices and rising global average temperatures.
