This is completely unacceptable. There are plenty of qualified Light Tangents who could do the job as well or better.

You fight the terrorists with the Tangent you have---not the Tangent you might want or wish to have at a later time.

This is just the first step in what is going to be a strange, strange world in 30-40 years.

We're going to have people in the public eye, people who are running for president, or are presidential appointments, and the media investigations will have to include things like "Sir, is it true that in 2023-2025, you used the pseudonym 'DedHed4bsolver' while managing a list.serv which trafficked in illegal schematics for 3D printers, releasing copywritten material to the world without approval?"shiats gonna be weird.

And you'll pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to people who will professionally sanitize the paper trail that is your public past.

I've never understood how someone can be a better hacker than someone else. I mean, knowledge of networks and security is pretty finite, and at some point, it seems like there would be parity among experienced hackers.

What room is there for individual "skill" to express itself in hacking? Someone educate me.

Some of it comes down to script knowledge. Who can build a better Bagle or Sasser.

Some of it comes down to bot nets. Like PharmaMaster and his DDOS bots; shut down an anti-spam company and a good chunk of the Israeli net.

Some of it is infiltration. Knowledge of ports, proxies, firewalls, and the ability to maneuver, so to speak, without getting caught.

And still some of it is the ability to manipulate data remotely, either removing/copying files...or leaving someone a "present."

A lot of different skills and knowledge, I guess. And like everything else in the IT industry, there's not a single person who knows it all.

If there's a group of angry, sexually repressed men gathered together for extended periods of time, I'm pretty sure they're finding a way to access internet porn.

Nope.

The irony is that some of the best who were persecuted, sent to jail, and served their sentence can't get work for most companies that need it the most in the US (like financial, medical, government, etc) these days. So someone like Kevin Mitnick tends to do a lot of work for Russian and other countries companies.

/been to 11 defcons

Like any skill or profession - there are those that are better at it than others. And the knowledge of networks and security is not finite by any scale of the imagination. The reason I am in this industry is that it changes every day.

What's cool is that he gets to confirm on the inside,

Almost the best validation.

I hope they can put his knowledge to good use,
both on defensive and offensive aspects
and revealing mysteries or covering up holes.

Maybe he can give the new CIO some tips too.
