by far my favorite clash song. video and audio are decent on this vid

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-06-06 07:59:39 PM
It's the Clash performing a song from their first album, I don't really need to listen to it before declaring it amazing

(listens to vid)

yep. Although Simonon was either doing a variation of what he was doing on the album version or his playing is a bit all over the place at the beginning

God, I love the Clash.

Dillinger and
Leroy Smart
Delroy Wilson (your cool operator)
With backing bands sound systems
And if they've got anything to say
There's many black ears here to listen

Ken Boothe (for UK pop reggae)

Easily one of their greatest song and one of THE greatest songs ever.

It's funny thinking of them listening to that stuff, but they did.

\\how come I never tell that natty dread drink at the Sheraton hotel

The first album by The Clash (US version) is one of my favorite records over. A few years ago, it caused me to enter my punk rock phase, which, thankfully, I only expressed in attitude, not style.

/but Janie Jones let me stand up for my meek self, and quit my dead-end job.

SU 2009-06-07 01:33:07 AM
The Clash bled sincerity and passion, and they made great farking tunes to top it off.

DimensionalPunk 2009-06-07 02:10:31 AM
Aaah, thanks for that

I recognize that this and the preceding link are technically "videos," but don't you think they would be more appreciated in the "music" area?

I mean, when I want to be entertained by videos on the internet, I'm not looking for music videos, or don't the admins get that?

Guntram Shatterhand 2009-06-07 04:15:53 AM
Damn, this makes me want to pull out Straight to Hell to see Joe Strummer light up the movie being the precursor to Jules from Pulp Fiction. Only COOLER.

Great video. I was 16 when London Calling came out and I heard The Clash for the first time. The Ramones had changed my attitude, The Clash changed my scope.

This version of White Man is one of those times when you kind of wonder what the hell Joe smoked/drank/took before the concert, he gets into that whisper-then-high pitch yelping thing... Better version is in the Rude Boy film, although that's broken up by the scenes of the bouncers beating the hell out of the kid they drag backstage.

Best Clash song.

wat

erratick 2009-06-07 04:43:58 PM
dholway probably meant the Sex Pistols (who basically were manufactured like today's boy bands by Malcolm McLaren).

The Clash were a bar band descendant- Strummer from the 101ers and Jones from the London SS. If you've heard either one, they were both kind of R&B pub band format.

lame troll though.

Taima [TotalFark] 2009-06-07 07:38:00 PM
dholway Think we found the troll.

The Clash were about the best band ever. When I was a kid I had about 17 Clash stickers on my old POS ford Escort.

Oh, and Thanks subby, enjoyed that immensly!

Sigh...nevermind. I was just parodying the dolts who spout the tired 'boy band' nonsense whenever there is a Sex Pistols thread.

/The first (British) Clash album was their best

Damn, my second GL in as many days...both on music.

Really glad you guys enjoy this stuff as much as I do.

-Protex Blue, +Jail Guitar Doors. American version has better songs,
British version better flow.

Can't we all agree that the Clash were an incredible band?

Chaosandcomedy 2009-06-08 11:45:55 AM
I'm really not trying to be inflammatory, but what was special about the Clash? I feel like this video was generic, low-energy, and uninspired. Maybe just a matter of taste.

/Bad Brains and Minor Threat FTW.

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2009-06-08 12:10:45 PM
Without The Clash, there would be no Bad Brains or Minor Threat.
The Sex Pistols were pretty much a media sensation, but The Clash were the real deal.
They brought a lot of musical styles attention that were pretty much unknown, like reggae. One can even argue that if Grandmaster Flash hadn't opened for them, Hip Hop and Rap would never have gone very far.
These guys were really bigger than the Beatles in terms of how they changed the musical alndscape.

The only band that matters. The last gang in town. They were extremely influential across multiple genres.

This video is from a late point in their career, shorlty before Topper left, I would say. They all look very thin and strung out from overwork and drugs. Joe is very drunk. Take a look at some over videos and you will see a diference.

Jim R 2009-06-08 01:15:22 PM
Great video. Thanks, subby.

RIP Joe

Henry Holland 2009-06-08 02:50:11 PM
Watching that video, I'm reminded of the NME headline for the review of London Calling: Give 'em enough dope and they turn in to the Rolling Stones

Pretty weak sauce, that performance, actually. Need the lyric sheet Joe?

I love The Clash, they're one of my very favorite bands, but I've always loved that they of all people ripped on other bands for "turning rebellion in to money".

dholway: /The first (British) Clash album was their best

Nah, it has some really b-side material on it like Deny and Protex Blue. The US version is more a compilation than a true album.

I'm gonna get ripped for this, but I've said for 20 years that Give 'em Enough Rope is their best album. It has a great set of songs --Safe European Home, Tommy Gun, Last Gang In Town, Guns on Roof, Drug Stabbing Time (except for the lame sax solo), Cheapskates amongst others-- plus the production is a fantastic, the energy coming off the LP is amazing; the first album sounds like it was recorded with two tin cans and a piece of string so it sounds thin and washed out and London Calling is too slick and has way too much phase shifter on it. Plus it has the worst Clash song ever, The Card Cheat.

cretinbob: These guys were really bigger than the Beatles in terms of how they changed the musical landscape.

Oh for fark's sake, get a grip. Sure, no Beatles, Elvis or The Rolling Stones in 1977, but that boy band The Sex Pistols had more impact than The Clash did. And all that "Wow! The Clash played reggae!" stuff, big deal, The Beatles were doing ska in 1968, amidst all their other genre plunderings. The Beatles played a wider range of styles, their records influenced more people than The Clash ever could have hoped to.

Clash City Farker 2009-06-08 04:13:40 PM
First they were in the vanguard of punk (77-78). Then punk died. They wanted to keep going so they made London Calling(79)and became more rock(sell out). I think once they hit NYC in 80/81, thats when they really started to influence the rap hip-hop scene. 81, 82, 83 really saw them burning out, they were being pushed as the next super group (The Last Gang in Town). It never really went over. By the time Combat Rock came out(84) people were tired of their schtick.

Me too. PBS had a documentary about them on, it was Strummer's favorite to play live.

Compared to the Ruts, the Clash were rank amateurs at reggae.

As a 35 year old post 'real punk' yuppie I'm going to take a brave stand and say:

The Clash kind of suck.
