The right wouldn't know racism if it bit them in the ass. Which is sad. It is so obvious but they are so oblivious. I really think most of them don't even know they are being hugely offensive.

NRO seems to be wholly intent on leading their little dicked party over a cliff as if they can't even see over the steering wheel. I suppose Republicans can only hope they'll get rucky and the inherently bad driving skills of the NRO folk will keep them from going through with it.

The whole debate at this point just reeks (like bad fish really) and these little dicked commentators over at NRO seem blinded as if they only observe the world through slanted, narrow eyes.

Not only have democrats done the exact opposite of drive off a cliff but its almost as if they have overloaded what once looked like a beat up old minivan with all the new comers to the party. Even put a new paint job on it or some ridiculous rims; although in fairness they are probably driving around without insurance.

I think it's pretty much nailed by Yglesias and the comments to his post: It's a way for them to bring out their beloved persecution complex by biatching and moaning about how the evil liberal PC police are out to get them for totally unoffensive things like exaggeratedly slanted eyes and big buck teeth on an asian caricature.

They're gonna have to go with Nate's "Operation Gringo" strategy.

Though that was designed only assuming loss of the Hispanic vote. No idea how much losing the Asian vote will impact that.

It's like they want to implode into meaninglessness. Don't they comprehend that immigrant populations, particularly the Hispanics and Asians, tend to lean conservative? They're all about bootstraps and family values and such. And the Republicans are just tossing these huge demographics who want any excuse to vote Republican aside.

If Hispanics and Asians were a shrinking demographic in the United States, the GOP's cavalier treatment of them would still be insensitive but would at least make strategic sense. But Hispanics especially are on the rise so this is wrong on pretty much every level. Atta girl, GOP!

They painted themseves into a corner. The same caucasian americans who oppose a wonan's right to an abortion and seperation of church and state also are xenophobic. They are not conservative, but reactionary. The only way the Republican party can resolve the two populations is to convince the white guts that the differently colored ones are not competition, but allies. But as long as they directly attack those (for now) minority groups, their message will not take hold in their communities.

Its a "Kos" poll (^). I have no idea about their methodology (except the boilerplate bullshiat at the bottom) but I think regardless of any bias you think they might have its probably a fairly legit stat; it;s really hard to slant a poll that farking hard no matter how sketch your randomization and stratification techniques.

It seems legit. Research 2000 is a respected group. I know some morons will say it doesn't count because KOS bankrolled it without looking at the pollster.

Well, 2010 is really shaping up nicely at this point. I think by 2012, the Republicans in office is gonna be a minority presence, perhaps imploding shortly afterwards with each side (if not more) pointing fingers at each other.

Is this when multiply "3rd party" candidates really start getting seats?

Sabyen91: Do you have a citation for that? I really want to see that to stick it to these aholes.

Caveat: It was a poll done for Daily Kos, but it was a poll done by Research 2000.

No other polls I've seen have asked that question, but there are other comparisons you can make between this Research 2000 poll and other Sotomayor polls:

Research 2000: 56% favorable opinion/29% unfavorable/15% no opinion
Research 2000: 54% say she's qualified/26% say she's not/20% no opinion
DemCorps: 56% approve of nomination/27% don't
Quinnipac: 55% approve of nomination/25% don't (54/24 in earlier poll)
Rasmussen: 48% favorable/44% unfavorable
Rasmussen: 41% say she should be approved/36% don't
USA today: 54% say she should be approved/28% don't
Gallup: 47% like the choice/36% don't

So it seems like Research 2000 is in line with DemCorps (which is partisan), Quinnipac and USA Today (which are nonpartisan), it has an 8% swing with Gallup and an 11.5% swing with Rasmussen.

So, worst case scenario, probably 20% think she's racist.

Driving Without Pants 2009-06-06 01:54:27 AM
Calling this a racist depiction is WAY overblowing the situation. In my expert opinion (I'm a cartoonist) this is a caricature that reads as mocking, not racist. First of all, she is NOT shown with "buck teeth" -- buck teeth are the prominence of the two front teeth, which you'll notice aren't drawn bigger than the rest of her teeth. It was perhaps unwise of the artist, considering the Asian imagery, to draw her closed eyes at such a severe angle, but this is most likely unintentional.

It's not as if there is a lack of real examples of racism coming from the right -- using that term to describe something like this dilutes its meaning and robs it of its power to condemn ACTUAL racism.

Kelly, 3rd parties are not going to get shiat. If they started at a grass-roots level they might but they seem to think they can get to the highest office without an actual base.

I think that is the point. It looks like Sotomayor is actually General Soto. Yes, I am sure it IS racist but it is so off the mark that it is ridiculous.
