But the Republican Party in the Land of Lincoln remains a mess after a series of missteps, indictments and an Alan Keyes Senate bid in 2004.

can't help but find it humorous that 'alan keyes senate run' is, sans any explination at all (none needed), politically synonymous with stepping in dog turds.

Meh, most politicians are lawyers, what else can we expect.

FTFA: "They keep trotting out these marquee names to scare Roland," said Delmarie Cobb, the senator's media and political adviser, adding that some Democrats are out to "lynch" Burris and turn him into a "whipping boy."

The correct nomenclature is "high tech" lynching, dumbass. Burris is a crook and pulling a Clarence Thomas isn't going to work again.

all you AM radio dipschmidts complaining that the state constitutional convention would cost 25 million aaand the state just couldnt afford that? we have no budget, we're potentially 12 billion in debt, an alleged briber in the national senate, and our former scumbag in chief is getting ready to get paid to go to costa rica? hindsight being 20/20 dont you think that 25 would've been better spent elsewhere? like revising the state constitution so this buggery wouldnt continue?

That's because #1. Justice Thomas is not a corrupt man and #2. His was INDEED a "high tech" lynching by the Senate Democrats led by Ted Kennedy ( who, speaking of corrupt, shouldn't EVER sit in judgment of anyone ).

Democrats should expect that their nominees will be treated exactly the same.....but in truth, they will be treated with far more dignity and respect. Two words that Senate Democrats have little knowledge of and certainly no use for.

First, you're complaining about something that happened 20 years ago. You, like many GOPpers, can't quite grasp that a generation of voters have grown up never knowing Ronald Reagan, the Cold War or Robert Bork.

Second, the only reason the GOP is going to "go easy" on Sotomayor is because Obama has completely outmaneuvered them again and they know it. Having lost moderates, blacks, intellectuals and the young, the GOP is now on the verge of losing the Hispanic vote. The toxic rump may think they can win elections by pissing off every interest group in America, but the people who actually run for elections know better.

Is this going to be one of those threads where non-Illinois residents try to apply 'average' political theories to the situation?

You do not move ahead in any political arena within Illinois without greasing the wheels or being vouched for, if you're vouched, other people grease wheels for you.

You'll note that the article is about an election. You can whine about Obama's SCOTUS pick in other threads.

Yeah, but somehow, people actually believe none of this corruption ever touched the great Obama. He's squeaky clean.
