Probably so they could add a few more awards for shiatty pop music.

In a statement, the academy said the decision was made to "ensure the awards process remains representative of the current musical landscape."

Well since Weird Al's dad just died, it wouldn't have been the same anyway.

If anyone is with the times it's the grammys. In the 21st century they've awarded Album of the Year Grammys to Robert Plant, Steely Dan, Ray Charles, Carlos Santana, and Herbie Hancock.

It's been awhile since The Grammy Awards was relevant.

A pity.

Too bad this had to happen just as the prog-polka genre was getting started...

I wonder how many "Grammy worthy" polka albums are produced in a year. Five? Seems like a missed chance to win a freaking Grammy or just get nominated and go to the event.

Cooper420 2009-06-04 04:00:43 PM
Another thing is that they don't even televise it and it takes less than 10 minutes at the awards ceremony... In fact I think they do it at the function the day before when they hand out awards for things they don't think anyone wants to watch....

I think they should can all of those categories then, if nobody watches those awards, why do they give them out?? This is all about publicity right?

Accordion to whom?

/true story: I have one of Ostanek's CDs and got him to autograph it. If he does off himself as a result, maybe it'll be worth something on E-bay...

In 2004 both of his parents died in their home due to their fireplace being lit but the flue was closed.

I just saw him this past October at Oktoberfest in Kitchener, Ontario where I live. He played 2 sets, plus David Wilcox was playing so he got up on stage with him. He's a great guy, has an absolute blast playing during that time of year.

Bastards.

Where's the outrage when an ordinary European ethnic group is slighted?

Because I'm genuinely pissed.

Good point. You know what happened when another European ethnic group felt slighted?

That must have been after he went to Hollywood, because that occurred in the mid 80s

Al's parents died in 2004 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. They lit their fireplace without the flue open.

As I am from Wisconsin, I love a good polka. There's just something about watching oldsters dance to songs about beer. I was pissed that our wedding DJ didn't play the polka I requested. That said, has anyone noticed that the music on the stations catering to Latinos is basically Mexican Polka?

What about the guy who was a lifelong, uh, polka-ist? Yeah, he knew there wasn't any money in it, but he could always look forward to the recognition of winning that coveted Polka Grammy. Turns on the news today..."Aw crap, I knew I shoulda picked up the keytar."

Of course, "The Lamb Lies Down On Świętojańska" and "Selling Poland by the Zloty" are much better, because back then they hadn't sold out.

Grammy winners for best polka album (new window)

Maybe they got rid of it because it's become kind of a one-sided fight? I mean, Jimmy Sturr's won 18 out of the 24 Grammys in the history of this category...

Umm... Polka devolved into Tejano back when the Germans and Czechs gave the lovely gift of accordion to the Mexicans. Bastards.
Thanks to them I have to hear the "oompa-pa-pa" beat all day and night but with Spanish lyrics.

I also saw this on the shelf at a local music store. Yeah, it's real.

When I went to wedding receptions as a kid, they always had a polka band, which seemed lame. But I have to admit now, my parents' generation and my grandparents' generation partied harder than my generation. They seemed to celebrate things as opposed to going out trying to get laid.

/not that that wasn't on their minds, I'm sure.

But without the Grammys, how would we know that Jethro Tull's "Crest of a Knave", and not Metallica's "...And Justice For All", was the Best Metal Performance of 1989?
