I'll start with Donald Duck Dunn

And John Entwistle

nekom [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:47:13 PM
Cliff Burton

jj325 [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:48:23 PM
Chris Squire

ne2d [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:48:24 PM
Paul McCartney

John Paul Jones [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:50:06 PM
What a ridiculous list.

bunner [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:50:12 PM
Well let us have a peek.

Ummm, James Jamerson?

Jeff Berlin?

Wilton Felder?

John Entwhistle?

Carol Kaye, Darryl Jones, Bakithi Kumalo, Tony Levin...

Please forgive me if I don't worship at the feet of Les Claypool as I think that Primus is one of the most egregiously unfunny, unmusical practical jokes ever foisted off as music.

Really? The guy from Muse? That's funny.

I would nominate
Colin Moulding from XTC
John Paul Jones and
the aforementioned Squire, McCartney and Entwistle as well.

BobtheFascist 2009-06-03 01:53:50 PM
Marcus Miller
Charles Mingus
Brian Bromberg
Pino Palladino
Jaco Pastorious
Mark King

Fleet [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:53:54 PM
Yes he is. He's the last one listed.

You had me worried there for a second.

John Paul Jones [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:55:04 PM
BobtheFascist: Brian Bromberg

Dude is sick. Pattitucci too. Oh, and check out Tom Kennedy some time. Not alien-level good, but goddamn solid.

I see I am not needed here, sens has gone before me. Great calls.

How in the hell is Victor Wooten not on that list? I mean, you don't have to like Bela Fleck, but for God's sake, that man can play the freaking bass.

jj325 [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:57:02 PM
jj325: Chris Squire

Of course Jones and Entwistle as well

50mm [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:57:13 PM
Oddly enough, he is on that list. (Justin Chancellor). However, it is in dire need of Victor Wooten.

gilgigamesh 2009-06-03 01:57:23 PM
Wow, I figured it would be a joke, but I was happy to see that list had both kinds of music: heavy metal and hard rock!

Stanley Clarke's farts outclass the best work of anyone on that list.

01SSJay [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 01:57:57 PM
Sean Malone

Sweet baby Jesus.

So THAT'S Brian Bromberg. Did some you tubing. Wow. It was cool to see Neil Zaza at it, too. Used to sit in with him on jam nights. Astounding axe man.

He catches a lot of sh*t for being smooth jazz, but the man has skills. I have most of his CD's. If you haven't heard "Wood" I'd be happy to zip a copy for you. It's all upright bass. More old school jazz stylings than smooth. EIP.

Oh, and check out Tom Kennedy some time

Will do.

No, Nancy. Its ok. I'm allowed to think something stinks. Its America.

How the hell could the list not include Jaco Pastorius?

Dreadstar [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:05:18 PM
I'm gonna throw out Michael Anthony, Geezer Butler, and Noel Redding, not necessarily for technical ability, for the ability to hold things together in the "power trio with vocals" format.

tnpir [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:05:51 PM
John Entwhistle?

Cliff Burton?

Jason Newstead?

Gene Simmons?

HotLonelyTeenageGirl [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:06:09 PM
I figured this list would suck, but that was the most ridiculous piece of shiat I've ever farking read. Completely ignore the farking geniuses of soul and funk. Ignore that critical rock fundamentals of Paul McCartney, John Entwhistle and countless others. Complete disregard for Jazz.

Another tedious article written by a late 80's early-90s farking talentless relic who gives decent bass players a bad name.

Speed and slapping DOES NOT MAKE YOU A GOOD BASS PLAYER.

hebrides [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:06:32 PM
Dave Pegg

Edgar Meyer

Michael Manring

That list...sucks.

Where's the John Deacon love?

Dreadstar: I'm gonna throw out Michael Anthony, Geezer Butler, and Noel Redding, not necessarily for technical ability, for the ability to hold things together in the "power trio with vocals" format.

Then you'll need to add Felix Pappalardi and Jack Bruce.

Dreadstar: I'm gonna throw out Michael Anthony...

Say what you will, but the man knew how to make the most out of open E. (So his fret hand was free to upend a bottle of Jack.)

kronicfeld [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:09:03 PM
That list was pretty clearly compiled by someone who only listens to exactly one type of music.

Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten all should be on that list.

I already listed Vic, but I agree with the other two as well.

You are right, and our forefathers died for your right to look like an uptight dorkwad who can't take a joke on a public computer message board. Who am I to take that away from you?

Maxwell murder has some sweet basslines in it.

Oh. believe me. I got the joke. That makes one of us. You sound about 20 and... really all. fu*ked. up. about what's cool and what isn't. I think I'm gonna just make my internet experience more enjoyable and shut you off before your pimples essplode all over my screen.

Nah, that list is still crap.

ExJerseyGirl: How the hell could the list not include Jaco Pastorius?

Came in here to ask the same thing.

I love it when douchebags who haven't heard anything more than 15 or twenty years old proclaim themselves "music experts," and then put up "best of" lists.

Honestly. Leaving Jaco Pastorius off of the list (much less not simply assuming he'll be #1 from the get-go) just shows off how much you DON'T know.

What's next? A "best drummers evar" list that puts Meg White in the top three, but that leaves off Buddy Rich?

i feel like everyone forgets about this guy. he's a stud.

les is a great player, fyi. you don't have to like what he wrote as songs, but dude is sick.

jaco's great. but the copius amounts of farkers' semen that has been left on his legacy seems to devalue his contribution.

and any "expert" would have a hard time declaring anyone an automatic #1

Guy Innagorillasuit [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:20:44 PM
As a bass player, I have my favorites, but I don't care about the 10 best. Most virtuoso types make terrible music.

bunner [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:21:28 PM
MaxxLarge: What's next? A "best drummers evar" list that puts Meg White in the top three, but that leaves off Buddy Rich?

Yes.

As usual, we have an entire generation of people saying "IT'S TIME FOR OUR BANDS TO BE LEGENDS" while completely overlooking what makes a legend, to begin with.

For instance... Most legends learn how to play their instrument. Many write benchmark hits that change the musical map for decades. Just showing up and getting signed really doesn't stack up to sh*t, if you think about it.

Some Bass Playing Guy [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:22:05 PM
What a farking ridiculous list.

GurneyHalleck [TotalFark] 2009-06-03 02:22:19 PM
Not so bad except for Justin Chancellor. I liked Paul D'Amour better.

But just about everyone whose posted so far has spoken for me as far as missing bassists.

I will add Phil Lesh:

And Victor Wooten:
