Never inhaled? Doesn't drink? Oh, she is a female.

Actually I read somewhere that five cigarettes a day is not all that bad for you. Especially if you do not INHALE. I smoke about 15-20 though and do inhale. I can be hardcore as well. When I was living in Beijing (where just living there is the equivalent of smoking two packs of unfiltered cigarettes a day) I would smoke cheap local cigarettes. Everyone in Beijing smokes. And don't get me started on drinking. I am drunk now.

I think it has more to do with the not inhaling. Though I don't think three or four a day is all that harmful either.

Seriously. I know a good handfull of cigar smokers, and none of them inhale. Is that how one 'smokes' cigars? What's the point? Are there any cigar smoker here who can explain this phenomenon? Cause everything I smoke, I inhale. By that I mean I smoke cigarettes and pounds of mari-ju-wanna.

SpiderQueenDemon 2009-05-31 07:35:16 PM
Huh.

I object to smoking only in places that are difficult to hose down with eleventy-hundred gallons of Uber Febreze after. (You know, the kind designed for airplanes and rooms containing incontinent pterodactyls.)

Buying a car that was owned by smokers can save you a grand, easily, but you then have to spend six hours and $50 to get it to smell halfway decent, and by that I mean people get into it and JUST KNOW you're the sicko who's been kidnapping Yankee Candle girls from the mall.

And if said smokers were also formaldehyde-y Aqua Velva and rose-water-drenched OLD PEOPLE, forget it. A Wal-Mart bicycle takes less effort to get you to and from work in any relative comfort.

It took me more scented products than the average drag queen owns to get that Camry to smell like something other than a sports bar for the geriatric that had not been cleaned since Ronald Reagan threw up in it during his first term. Jelly beans, stale smoke and fail.

So, yeah, the grannylady probably makes dogs evolve thumbs on the spot just so they can shoot themselves. But smokers are okay, provided they keep the cheap 'USA Gold' shiat outside and wipe down the walls every Presidential administration or so. Clove-smoking hipsters with OCD are, of course, welcome.

Smoker mythology, mostly. Smokers sometimes bray out lines like "there's no statistical evidence that smoking less than five a day is harmful". Well, it's not really true. A few studies do show that. For the studies that don't, it's a matter of not being able to tease a trend out of the noise (it's very hard to control for noise with human subjects).

Especially if you do not INHALE.

However, this is true, and should be obvious.

I realize there's always a few outliers, but most likely this woman would have died at least 20 years ago if she inhaled.

He must be ordering them from Europe (probably Russia). Just do a search for cheap cigarettes or European cigarettes and you will get plenty of links. Be warned that you are only allowed to import something like 2 cartons per month. Most companies waive shipping if you order 10 cartons. If you get caught, guess what? You can be charged with smuggling and go to federal PMITA prison.

Or you could just roll your own. It is still taxed, but not as much as packaged cigarettes. Or go to an Indian reservation if one is near you. Or Mexico of you have a Mexico near you.

Someone should do some math and determine how much she has spent on cigs over the years. You'll have to adjust for inflation every year after determining the rate. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. Someone get on this, OK? It's important.

when I smoked, I smoke 2-3 cigs a day, 3 days a week, and I only do that when I feel like buying some cigs, 2-3 times a year. (which won't be anymore now that they are 50 bucks) I know that this is not common, but I doubt, just from knowledge of my body, that it harms me any more than just living in the city.

anyway as somebody who used to just smoke occasionally I can say that the days after I smoke, it is harder to get out of bed, and of course am always clearing my throat. BUT any time I feel like I am getting a soar throat or cold, I grab a pack if I can. smoke 3-4 a day and I don't get sick. when I don't smoke, I do get sick and just take medicine (which is hard to find because of the damn meth heads).

not that one person analyzing himself is any kind of science, just mentioning.

I used to do that but ended up getting dinged by customs. They charge about $30 per carton you import so it's barely worth it. That's if the inspectors don't swipe them... or the postal workers...

I'm not sure where the number 171,500 comes from unless she has five meals per day.

you can still get cancer of the mouth or gums if you don't inhale. Some people are just lucky... Not everyone that smokes gets lung cancer, either.

Just depends on how the cards fall.

Smokes are like buying lottery tickets. The more you smoke the better chance you have of "winning" cancer, emphysema or heart disease.

Of course, the law of probability says that one can still buy thousands of lottery tickets for each drawing and still never win anything....

Freaking amateur.

I smoked an average of 2 packs a day for 35 years, for a total of roughly 511,350 cigarettes.

I singlehandedly consumed enough poison to kill every man, woman and child in a small city, and spent wasted enough money paying for it to buy a small house.

By the time I quit, I was coughing up little gray-green oysters every morning, and I looked right over the edge of my grave (gaw-DAMN, that's a helluva way down!) before I did what had to be done.

Clean 5249 days so far.

Nicotine is what "smack" wants to be when it grows up.

Gyrfalcon, you owe me a new keyboard.

McNip 2009-05-31 08:22:33 PM
I'm a former cigarette smoker and a current cigar and pipe smoker.

First off tobacco is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE INHALED!!! Yes thats right. It's only because of all the crap they do to cigarette tobacco that makes it possible to be inhaled. Don't believe me? Hand a cigar to any cigarette smoker and tell them to inhale, stand back so they don't hit you with the forth coming vomit.

If you don't inhale, tobacco really isn't that bad for you despite what the anti-tobacco and cigarette companies want you to think. It wasn't really until after ww2 when cigarette popularity went through the roof that people started dropping dead from smoking. Just think of all the old people that smoked cigars and lived past 90. Now think how many cigarette smokers make it past 90.

Also by not inhaling you slow down the absorbtion rate of nicotine. Your brain doesn't get the instant hit of nicotine like you do when the smoke is absorbed into the lungs. While you'll get more nicotine out of a single large cigar than you will a pack of cigarettes, you don't develop the same addiction. I rate my caffine addiction as higher than my nicotine addiction. Skipping smoking isn't really a big deal. See how many cigarette smokers can just cold turkey for a week and not think twice about it.

This is all just food for thought. Go do your own research and hit up a cigar shop near you.

SeamusFerrell 2009-05-31 08:24:43 PM
Tweeker: They tax the fark out of rolling your own now. Cost of a can of American Spirit has doubled since this guy came in office.

Yeah, I know. It is still way cheaper than buying packaged smokes though. The tax on loose tobacco went up something like 400 percent thanks to Barry. At least that is my experience in Chicago. You have this crazy federal tax, but the state, county, and city taxes are not nearly as bad as they are on packaged cigarettes.

What the hell? Isn't it taxed up the ass enough? And I find it completely absurd that American tobacco is being packaged in Europe and then shipped back to America because it is cheaper to buy from a European company instead of the Ma & Pa store on the corner. Liquor is next...

I don't know about 5 a day, but considering that the lungs do have remarkable ability to cleanse themselves, there should be some amount of toxins you can take in from smoking that your body can handle. There is also a lot more to getting cancer than just smoking (studies show that people who drink decaf, both ex-smokers and consistent smokers, are less likely to get lung cancer than their counterparts and the credit goes to the flavinoids (sp?), an antioxidant) and depending on what other factors you have going on, the number of smokes you can get handle without getting cancer is going to be affected by it.

I did that too... I got about a years worth of smokes out of the internet before my name got on some list. I tried a few weeks ago with my new address and they attached the bill on the first order.

According to the letter in the pack, they search 10-25% of all internationally shipped packages. I guess I got unlucky on my first attempt at the new spot. I'm not going to do it again... I don't smoke as much any more... down to about a pack a week depending on how much I drink.
