It's rather silly, when you think about it, what kind of stuff gets defined as "critical infrastructure" in the war on terror.

In late 2006, I was in Uganda decompressing after 2 weeks of climate-change conference in Nairobi. Wandered past the railway station, saw an old passenger carriage sitting there in the weeds, took a few shots of it through a chain-link fence. A couple traffic police (note, jobs have nothing to do with the railway... also note, in Uganda, traffic police carry AK-47s like all the other police) told me it was "critical transportation infrastructure" and I couldn't take pictures without permission from the railway's division police commander.

Fortunately, the DPC's office was right inside the gate.

More fortunately, he saw a bazungu wearing a t-shirt about Africa and climate, and divulged that before he got into police work, he'd studied environmental science.

Most fortunately, he took me to the CEO to make sure it was okay, and the CEO was an ex-Conrail guy brought over from Philadelphia, who gave him a look of "good god, man, are you stupid or something?" and said that of course it was okay for people to take photos of trains.

So then I got a very nice escorted tour of the rail yard, with better photographic angles than I would have had otherwise. :)

Trainspotting is more fun when you have official blessing.

This, in spades. Most of what is being done in the name of "war on whatever" is just dingbats whose cool new uniforms and shiny badges have gone to their tiny brains.

In other news, police in Boston, USA are taking to carrying assault rifles.
