JerseyTim: Dare to dream.

Yeah

Um

No.

You're retarded.

America has been building fences, watchtowers, deploying UAVs, sensors, and hiring thousands of new guards in an effort to make the longest unguarded border in the world, well, guarded.

The North American Union died after 9/11, when America turned paranoid.

And a good thing, too, otherwise all their actors, singers and game show hosts would be coming down here taking jobs away from the rest of us.

Oh, wait.

Number of actual terrorists that will be stopped by this measure: Zero.
Number of law abiding citizens of the US and Canada inconvenienced: Millions.

The sooner that Canada and the US merge the better. As long as the new country is called "Canada" and run from Ottawa with the Queen as head of state of course.

This.

Well, for border towns, the crossing is usually nothing special and people on both sides are used to casually doing this. The new rules will change a lot of that, to the detriment of the local economies.

That about sums it up.

Hmmm... I wonder what this means for Derby Line? There are houses that sit smack on the border with kitchen on one side and dining room on the other, not to mention several facilities and shared emegency services.

The husband has to go to Canada on business on June 8th. They just told him last week and he's the only person in the family without a passport. Now we're jumping through hoops to get it in time. It'[s a trip for the Navy so they should be able to rush it but ti's a pain in the ass. He has to run up to DC and walk it through on Monday.

We've been to Canada a few times. Aside from a dickhead US border guard there wasn't a problem.

True. My suggestion is never going to happen. I just like to say it on the few occasions any American suggests that Canada becomes part of the US. They go purple and the little veins on their head start sticking out.

Like it's perfectly reasonable to them that all Canadians should just happily give up their country but the thought that they, Americans, should give up their country? That's insane!

Newsflash (for some) Americans. Lots of people from other countries are just as patriotic for their country as you are for yours. Not everyone dreams of becoming American.

Deal. We'll take the Pacific coast states. I'll have to think about New York. And we'll only take the nicer East coast states if Jesusland agrees to keep the Kennedy family.

Anyone going to Canaduh for anything other than government business should be arrested as a traitor anyway. America will only be a paradise when we close all borders cut off all our foreign support (charity) and become truly isolationist.

Roger Arseways 2009-05-31 03:05:36 PM
ah, I remember the good ol' days where you'd come back from some crappy bar right over the border (Quebec drinking age is 18) and the conversation would be:

"Where've you been tonight?"
"Le Rocket."
"Any survivors?"
(looks at car full of passed out people) "Just me."
"Alright, get home safe."

I don't know, if you take the maple leaf off that flag you pretty much have what's going on now.

The founding fathers would be stunned to learn we failed to conquer Canada.

The slave holders betrayed us. They didn't want more Northern states. Otherwise we would have.

I bet they don't. Nobody in America cares about Canada. It's nice, and I like Montreal, because it's close, but honestly, we just don't care that much.

The days of going back and forth to Canada over the Peace Bridge with just a verbal declaration of U. S. citizenship officially ends.
/quote

Wait, what? People have been going into the US on their VERBAL "I am a citizen" before? I must have missed something reading the article.

Albeit Canada is more lax than the US, they have always wanted an ID and a health card/Birth Certificate to get back in. Both which are wallet sized. Visitors needed only an ID before the 9-11 crap happened. But nothing 'verbal'.

Wait, what?

They did. But perfectly legally. In other words, this law and these border checks wouldn't have stopped them or even slowed them down in the slightest.
