(Some Guy) Interesting The official manual of South Carolina's Legislature continues to label some of the state's former politicians as "Negro" or "scalawag". Surprisingly no one has a problem with this   (wbaltv.com) divider line 32

Couldn't a "Sun God" be considered a "Supreme Being"?

\I believe in the existence of Alanis Morrisette.

I know a girl who does that.

Note, the S.C. constitution says, "THE Supreme Being." Not "a" Supreme Being. It's an interesting phrase for a US State to have in its constitution. I doubt it's ever been tested.

Oh, man, that'd be great - I can see it now...

US Supreme Court: "Sorry, your constitution is null and void. You are no longer part of the USA."
SC: "The SOUTH will RISE AGAIIIN!"
Congress: "Oh yeah, we'd like all that money back as well, since you were never really a state to begin with."
SC: "Aww, shiat."

I suddenly have a wish to run for governor of South Carolina.

I'm down with 'scalawag.' That's a word that needs to come back into usage.

Negro isn't actually a racist term.

We need to conclude reconstruction. Send the Army the Potomack back South to finish what we started.

negro is racist? Oh that's right, only if you are white.

Somebody ought to call the United Negro College Fund and let 'em know their name is iffy.

Don't even know why that's in there; it's not like anybody running for Governor of SC could win an election if they did such anyway.

My brain put a hyphen inside "black speaker". Like "code-talker" or "horse-whisperer". It seemed really out of place in context with the article.

/this is Glenn McConnell in his confederate uniform. He is the senate majority leader in SC. He hates Gov. Mark Sanford for criticizing him over spending billions of dollars in state money to raise the CSS Hunley, among other things.

From a free online dictionary:

scal·a·wag (skl-wg) also scal·ly·wag (skl-)
n.
1. Informal A reprobate; a rascal.
2. A white Southerner working for or supporting the federal government during Reconstruction.

Good for them.

/never thought I'd say that

As an Atheist Yankee who lived in Columbia, SC I am surprised this didn't get the "Obvious" tag.

Yeah. Actual issues like complaining about President Obama paying tribute to fallen soldiers:

"To South Carolina's top NAACP leader, President Barack Obama's decision to pay tribute to Confederate soldiers on Memorial Day was just as wrong as it would be to honor Adolph Hitler or ignore the devastation caused by the Sept. 11 hijackers."

That said, neither "negro" of "scalawag" should be considered offensive terms in this usage. They are part of a historical document, and should not be omitted. This document is a product of its time.

I hate to invoke the "that's racist!" kid, but black politicians have little to be proud of from those days, imho. The old photographs lend more dignitiy to this experiment in tokenism than it than the facts bear out. The Northern army occupiers put these men in the state legislatures to humiliate the South and have people in "power" who were under their thumb. Most could not meaningfully read or write. Most had no qualifications whatsoever. Booker T. Washington notes in his autobiography that most of the thing with black legislators was a big scam.

We gave local surviving Jews similar positions in the occupying government of Germany after WW2, for the same psych ops reasons.

Typical "congressmen" were chosen because they were the occupying army officers' favorite servant.

They had very little collective experience of competence and earned the hatred and ridicule of the press at the time, setting back real progress in exchange for political shenanigans.

keloyd 2009-05-31 05:13:20 PM
As for the "scalawag" references, I do not see how this is offensive. It is a necessary distinction, like the difference during WW2 between the Free French government in exile and the quislings in Vichy - different people, diferent motives, different moral plane, hence the different label.

It's South Carolina. What did you expect? They're just slightly to the right of West Virginia on the redneck scale. I've been there several times and with the exception of Charleston, which is a gorgeous city, the rest of it can rot.

Since we are no longer supposed to call black people, colored people, should we sue the NAACP to make them change their name?

My aged grandmother, a product of her times, still calls blacks "colored people." What am I supposed to do? She's 93. She still voted for Obama.

What's wrong with "Scallawags"? They were evil people who took advantage of newly-freed blacks, newly-impoverished whites, and the Northern government to turn a buck. They should be acknowledged as such in the historical record. Like keloyd said, they were no different from the Quisling and Vichy governments of WWII.

Negro means black in Spanish. It's on the Crayola black crayon.

Does this mean Obama won't ever make Barney Frank the ambassador to Saudi Arabia?

For all we know, in South Carolina that might mean Cale Yarborough.

Right, and the Confederates were the good guys . . . as evidenced by how great the Southerners treated blacks as soon as Reconstruction ended.

/You know who else compares the Union government to the Nazis?

"For example, the term "scalawag" was used to refer to white Southerners who supported the federal government's actions in the region."

Why do you think the federal government of the United States after the Civil War was just like the Nazis in World War II?

Do you think the Southerners should have kept rebelling after the Civil War was over?

No, only if you're using it as a slur or insult. You know the difference, you're just playing dumb. Or maybe I assume too much. Maybe you are just that dumb.
