I would think It would make it easier...
never ever going to buy a used cell phone after my last thought.

Huh? If they're sniffing butts any way they can check for cell phones while they're there.

I'm sorry to sound hopelessly ignorant, but given the severe damage that criminals can wield with cell phones, why can't prisons have some sort of disabled wireless? Certainly there must be a way to disable wireless communication in a room?

They need to just start jamming the signals within the prison walls and it's done and over with. Pass the legislation already...

Well, this would also mean that the security systems there that depend on those frequencies would be screwed. Not to mention the guard's phones, people on the outside witnessing an escape and unable to dial 911.. etc.

So the inspector general for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice comes out and says "Some of these guys make next to nothing, so you can see how easy it could be to corrupt them."

... and the solution is to spend an assload on cell phone jammers.

Rocket surgery in motion.

Solution is worse than problem, and violates Federal law, for good reason.

Cell phones work on higher frequencies than typical "Handie Talkies." Guards aren't allowed to bring in cell phones, and it isn't hard at all to have a communication system on the 2m band (~140 MHz) and even the 70cm band (~400 MHz) isn't really into the same range as cell phones. Cell frequencies don't start until around 800 MHz.

You have two options. You can jam the 800-1200 MHz or you can set up a cell receiver and check if anyone is transmitting. Neither can really impact portable communications below 800 MHz.

Could they integrate a makeshift Faraday cage by wrapping exterior walls with copper (or something cheaper) mesh? This wouldn't prevent transmission within the facility, and it wouldnt jam signals outside of the facility. The only real drawback is when prisoners are out in the yard. There has to be a way to prevent them from making unauthorized phone calls.

I would think wanting to sniff butt would be an asset when looking for prisoner contraband.

Oh and the prisons are not allowed to jam wireless communications because that is against federal law and no defense is provided for prisons.

There was an interesting piece on NPR about this down here in Baltimore after some witness got killed form a hit put out from inside a jail via cellphone. Basically, they were saying that prison cellphones are a billion dollar a year business and that the carriers lobby the hell out of all levels of legislation to keep the status quo of not blocking the signals in the prisons. Very one sided but interesting non the less

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2009-05-31 02:03:32 AM
If there are really this many prisoners hiding cellphones up their asses, then the problem has gotten way beyond just getting dogs to overcome their urge to sniff butts.

Whatever happened to those old fashioned rectal searches with big bullet-nosed flashlights?

FTFA: Moriarty is the investigator and bloodhound the state of Texas uses to trail the illegal traffic.

"These are not stupid people," he said of the coordinated efforts to slip phones into the prison and hide them. "There are a lot of hands in between and they all want a piece of the action."

Damn! He talks? That Moriarty is one SMART dog.

I like how the politician gets a call from a prisoner, probably the prisoner wanted to proclaim his innocence, and instead the politician leads the cause to crack down on cellphones.

How about letting us know why he called. How about a little concern for your fellow man instead of rushing to judgement you prick.

That's more or less what I had in mind. As for prisoners in the yard, I would think that it would be infinitely more difficult to retrieve the phone and make the call in those, pardon the pun, wide open circumstances. Inside, there are all sorts of options for privacy. Blocking signals in the building hardly seems like a slippery slope, as this is prison we're talking about. Getting upset over that means that you'd have to upset about the loss of total freedom in the first place.

This.
The aluminum lathe surrounding my stucco house prevents cell phone reception. I have to stand by a window or go outside to call or receive a call

Article did not mention anything about phones in asses. You read one or two stories of this actually happening, and now every convict is walking around with a phone up his ass. (Which, if true, would make the phones worth every bit of $2000. Not to me, of course)
The real question is this:
"Prison officials in Arizona are training dogs to sniff out cell phones"
Just what the hell does a non-ass cell phone smell like? I put mine down for my dog to sniff, he just lifted his leg. They say dogs can smell fear. Maybe the phones are fearful of getting found.
Is there anything these magic sniffer dogs can't do?

MissDementia 2009-05-31 09:59:28 AM
Why, exactly, is blocking cellphone transmissions in a prison against federal regulations? All of our local hospitals have cell blocking technology and use it. Every time I've had to take one of my Old People to hospital I've had to go outside to alert the rest of my family someone needed to go to my house to watch the other one for a while. I get "no signal" on my phone the minute I walk in the front door. If it's perfectly acceptable to block the signals in a hospital, why is not OK to do so in a prison?

StokeyBob 2009-05-31 10:11:44 AM
In January, U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, a Texas Republican, introduced legislation that would let prisons jam cell-phone signals within their walls.

So your locked up and pretty much away from being bombarded with cell phone radio waves and then they pass a law to make sure you get fried anyway.

I personally prefer the idea of putting a shared cell tower with transmitters for the major carriers right next to the prison since they normally lock onto the closest and strongest signal. Then simply monitor the calls through them.

I don't exactly know what I am talking about, but I believe that has to do with the equipment and type of unit, and only in certain areas of the hospital. My dad works in a cath. lab and his unit and the surrounding area gets absolutely zero reception. OTOH, my mom works in a SICU of the same hospital and calls and texts go through to her without incident.
